Obviously this is enforced in asia, but in western leagues do people do something like handshake instead? Considering handshakes would be the western equivalent would that be considered proper or improper etiquette?
@@electrokineticphenomenon8800, I would guess that at higher tournaments, traditional custom takes preference and people bow, but at lower tournaments, local custom takes precedence, e.g. I can't imagine everyone bowing at a local New York City tournament, but maybe some people would at a US national invitational or something.
Nice inclusions of Hikari no Go on this video. Haha that anime introduced me on this game a few years ago. I'm really interested in playing this. I will definitely watch this series.
Hi Stephanie , happy Autumn to you as well :> I noticed your channel about a week ago and after watching a few videos I was inspired to start playing go again after a long hiatus. Great video. I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series. peace
Howdy! I lived with someone who qualified as a "master" (greater than 4 dan?) and they helped me practice, but it seems this game is opposed to my style of cognition... (I would lose with a four stone handicap) All the more reason to practice!!! Thanks. They never mentioned starting in the top right... According to Black, no? So, it would be White's bottom left?
Hi everyone I'm from morocco .. I'm very interested in Go .. It doesn't exist here .. There are few amateur players not even 50 i think .. I really want to learn the game and teach it to people here... I was introduced to the game throw the anime " hikari no go"
Why is it a matter of etiquette for black to play in the upper right corner? Does white also have a predetermined response? If not, wouldn't that mean white actually goes first since they place the first truly free move? One of the things that throws me off about Go is the empty board; like writing, it's hard to know where to start or how to build anything meaningful with such a large blank space. I'm looking forward to this series and appreciate your taking the time to help all us noobs, I've wanted to learn to play Go for quite a while . Thx
It viewed that way because black is reaching over the Go board to his opponent. I heard it’s because the stronger player is normally white. To your other question, no. You’re going to play a courier anyways, (unless you like to experiment with strange openings) so it doesn’t matter what corner black first plays when it comes to game play.
Good question. As far as our pros know, reaching to the farthest corner from yourself is a way of showing respect; while taking the top left corner would take the closest corner of your opponent's right hand (sorry, not enough lefties in ancient China). As for your second and third questions, the etiquette restriction on Black does not affect gameplay, while any restriction on White's first move will. Happy that you're interested in Go!
If you don't bow before the game, the Go police will catch you!!

Is bowing mandatory in the U.S.? Is there a penalty if you don’t bow?

I love that you mentioned the bow - it could be surprising for the new players :) great video!
With the lock down on, I decided to learn how to play something new. Looks like i'm plunging into a whole new universe.

Amazing video. Your English got much better compared to the old Go Beginner guide.
Omg so excited for this new series!

i was looking for a video like this
Does black always move to D16 first, or was that an arbitrary choice in the "upper right" part of the board?
