  • This 1941 John Ford tearjerker won 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It starred Maureen O'Hara, Walter Pidgeon and a very young Roddy McDowall.
According to my Welsh relatives, this movie is so true to life on how things were in the mining valleys of South Wales. (although there seemed to be a touch too much Hollywood at times... the men seldom came home from the pits, singing!)
The final scenes where the dying 'dadda' is held by his son while mum, waits at the surface of the mine and says the immortal words "he came to me just then". And for the Welsh out there, the moving and emotive music simply tears at the heart strings even more.
Dedicated to Thomas and Bronwen from Nantymoel and Ogmore Vale.
