From Ian's analysis, it seems like an extremely user friendly rifle. Unfortunately It came out a bit too late to become relevant, when the bullpup hype has already died down and most countries with bullpups are switching back to more conventional rifles (China, New Zealand, France, etc.)
@@quakethedoombringer from what I understand, New Zealand and France are both switching away from bull pups more for political reasons than military ones. For example New Zealand had no preference for the bullpup rifle but oddly they selected a platform after ordering the rifle in 7.62 not 5.56 so I don’t think they are changing caliber to 7.62 I wonder why they chose a rifle that was built to fire the 7.62 over one built for 5.56. Whereas Australia has recently modernised its military with the EF88 Austeyr so it’s unlikely they will move away from bullpups anytime soon. As for France most of what I’ve heard is rumours but it sounded like a lot of their selection was political and not based on who actually won the trials. China I know nothing about not even that they were looking at a new rifle.
@@cynicalfox190 from what I have read, the QBZ 96 has some major issues concerning ergonomics and reliability and unlike European nations, China does not have the experience to surmount this issue, so they pick the easy way out by adopting a AR 18 platform. @@quakethedoombringer interesting I don’t know much about the Chinese weapons or their procurement process. And as for the kiwis because of the ANZAC connection the kiwis have generally adopted what the Australians use and the Australians updated to the EF88 (essentially an Australian modification of the AUG A3 improved for specific Australian requirements) but the kiwis held a trial instead and chose a completely seperate system that is to my knowledge exclusive to the New Zealand armed forces the LMT MARS-L I would suspect much like the Australians adopting the M1 over the Leo2 this is to closer ties to America as the LMT is a modified M4 as least as far as New Zealand is concerned. Then again both the Australia and New Zealand special forces have always used M4’s or such style platforms so maybe they wanted to standardise across their whole military as it’s fairly small and not too difficult to restandardise on a new system.

The HK416 was well proven, the VHS was used by the Iraqis in the fight against ISIS but hasn't been widely used by elite forces like the HK416. Also bullpups are on the way out, generally. New Zealand (which used the Austeyr, a licence-built AUG) switched to an AR15 platform too. But the decision to make half of their rifles so short with 10 inch barrels, especially after the fighting in Afghanistan, perplexes me
@plentyness that is very subjective opinion. I spent two years in ex YUGO wars and I would never trade anything for Serbian made Kalashnikov (M70). Whatever you do to her, it never stop shooting. And it’s not like Hungarian or Romanian AK 47 versions that, after you shoot two magazines, you lean and press the rifle against the wall in such a way that the barrel is hitting the wall, you will find yourself that the barrel can band on the side you lean on. I spoke recently with someone who spent over a year in Iraqi military, and they absolutely love VHS gun. It could not be jammed at all even in Iraqi desert conditions. Now, I did not have VHS in my hands and I can’t speak to it. It all comes down to reliability and price. HK 416 is absolutely gorgeous gun and for sure is one of the best. The same story what is better in real life goes with M53 (ex Yugo exact copy of MG42) and PKM. yes PKM is an amazing gun but we mostly fear from enemies M53 sound. 7.92x57 can easily kill you on distances up to 2000 m. The challenge with M53 besides being a bit heavier then PKM, was that once you start shooting, the enemy (Serbs) would look To identify your spot/position and then shoot at you with mortals. PKM never had that issue and that is why many people opted to go with PKM. But to choose between M53 and PKM, I would go with M53 any day of the week.

Unfortunatly not, although I was also amazed first. At around 11:30 Ian explains how you still need to disassemble the bolt carrier to change from left to right ejection or vice versa.
@@Steinstra-vj7wl um, I'm pretty sure the DesertTech MDR is substantially easier. To swap your ambi ejection port, literally just swap the ejection port cover with the ejection port on the other side. It just snaps out and in using a latch on the side, and doesn't require stripping the FCG to manipulate a cam pin.
@@OTElron Yup, switching the ejector port is a bit more complicated, but you can still shoot the rifle from both hands. This is really important in CQB because you find yourself constantly switching the rifle left-right due to corners.
Finally you have this top Bullpup which in my opinion is one of the best Bullpup rifles ever build - personally I even like it more than any Tavor or Steyer Aug. This VHS V2 is extremely well thought out, absolutely reliable, good trigger and amazing accuracy. In addition, it is fully usable for left and right-handers without any disadvantages.
This is one of the coolest rifles I've seen. The fact that it can be disassembled without tools (apart from an unfired cartridge) and even switched from left to right hand in the field in a matter of minutes is excellent. Now, we watch the range video and see how it actually shoots. Maybe it's bullpup done right?
You are right. But it’s sort of funny how a lot of Star Wars blasters are modded World War area guns, or older. Think the Sterling was the most modern firearm used as a prop at the time of filming.
To me it bears a passing resemblance to the FR-27 Sanction Flechette Rifle from the newer Deus Ex games, except the gun in the game doesn't use STANAG magazines, it breaks open like a coach gun and you put in a little box of ammo in the back.
it looks good but what i cant understand is why they put humongous oprod to cycle with the bolt (and add to the recoil) and made the gas piston so short. It kinda defeats the purpose and advantage of the short stroke system when they could have easily have longer piston pushing directly on the bolt without being a part of the recoiling mass. at this point they might as well make the gun long stroke ...
@@saff3356 so, what is it you wanted to say here ? From watching that video it has quite a bit of recoil for inline 5.56 system. im not saying its bad, what im wondering is why they went with short piston/long oprod instead of long piston and no oprod. Reliability? weapon balance? rate of fire reduction ? there must have been a reason to make the bolt assembly heavier.
High carrier mass to bolt mass ratio is good for reliability. Having a long ass oprod is akin to telescopic bolt that smgs like uzi used, to increase mass. Large piston size also helps with part durability.
I don't normally comment on these videos but this is just so elegantly engineered with so much quality of life in mind I can't help but admire it greatly.

Usually a weapons system takes years of fine-tuning to make it intuitive and multi-functional. Seriously this rifle looks like it took at least 10 years to get where it is. Pretty impressive. I'd buy one.

Hands down my favorite rifle and definitely my favorite bullpup from a design, technical and engineering perspective. Such a beautiful piece of kit. I hope I get the joy of firing or owning one one day 🤞🤞🤞
The LD-F3 looks to be an improvement on this model but most users consider it too big and unwieldy. I hear rumblings of a fourth generation prototype mysteriously designated as "DVD".
God, I've been waiting for this one for years. Been visually one of my favorite rifles for a long time. Still holding out hope there will be a civvie version at some point
I got the chance to try one of this rifle, very cleaver design, very accurate and reliable rifle, very well made rife . Just the gas port has no suppressed position, you have to change the valve.
I'd love to see a video on how it performed in the French trials. Two of the biggest issues with the rifle could be that the optics rail might not keep the best zero after disassembly and the ambidextrous bolt could be really easy to accidentally put back in the wrong orientation in the field by a grunt. That being said, this rifle looks incredible compared to other bullpups and non-bullpups alike. It has a lot of built-in modularity in the mag well, the stock, the fire control group, and the handguard. It has a bolt catch and it's in a good location, and the rest of the controls all seem like they're designed qualitatively while also probably being efficient to manufacture. I really wonder what a 416 has going for it over this gun other than being an H&K and getting everything that comes with that name.
An exercise in how to design and make an extremely ergonomic and flexible rifle system , for right or left hand users, and as was shown, part of a modular concept of a "Family of rifles", with interchangeable parts. Kudos to the design team of this rifle, that were given a difficult design specification to fulfil!
The reversing of the ejection side was found to be an issue during trials : basically, you need to get the cam and the bolt in the correct position after EACH disassemby/cleaning. While it might not be an issue for a gun enthusiast, it was found to be a MAJOR issue for the average soldier who could reassemble the gun to eject on the wrong side and find out in combat that the gun is useless and jammed after the first shot. When you design a combat firearm to be fully ambidextreous, it is essential that the ejection side is sort of "hard implemented" like precisely on the FAMAS, Tavor or AUG.
@@saff3356 my experience is as irrelevant as is your comment. These are findings from the french trials. If it was considered a big issue for the french, the chances of the rifle in its current form was pretty slim

France definitely picked the HK 416 because of politics (HK has better lobbying power + France needs to improve relations with Germany to strengthen the EU). Not sure about New Zealand though

Doubt they chose the HK to "please Merkel", it's an excellent rifle already used massively by our special forces along with the SCAR-L which was also trialed. But yeah VHS was also my personal preference.
@plentyness - I agree with you on that point. But lots of those selection for 416 is coming from hundreds if not more years of experience for HK … whereas VHS company has been on market for the past 20 years or so. That is an a line with old British saying - If I don’t know what is good, I will buy the most expensive piece.

This is one VHS that you prefer over a DVD player *wink wink*
That's a clever looking design. If anything like their pistols its unlikely to disappoint.
man, that looks like such a nice, well thought out rifle, and easily adaptable for any military, I'm surprised it hasn't seen more use
When you design a combat firearm to be fully ambidextreous, it is essential that the ejection side is sort of "hard implemented" like precisely on the FAMAS, Tavor or AUG.
and your experience with this rifle is?
@@saff3356 my experience is as irrelevant as is your comment. These are findings from the french trials. If it was considered a big issue for the french, the chances of the rifle in its current form was pretty slim
