Somebody may have said it already. But listening to season six commentary tracks is like listening to a therapy session. In this commentary I finally get that Bretta is how Dan Harmon thinks of himself. Everybody looking down on you and criticizing you, especially when there’s silence in the room.
I love these solo Harmon tracks but they sort of parallel the feeling of melancholy that hangs over the final season. It’s not a bad thing, but even the extent of Britta’s self-loathing and shame in this episode really speaks to this. Community could always be dark in its way but the extent of her humiliation in this episode really hurts every time I watch it. Your heart goes out to her. But the more painful tone of the season also matches some of the practical limitations. The campus doesn’t bustle with nearly so many extras as in the early seasons and they lost some of the more established, comfortable settings. The lighting change and greater self-examination of the characters really fits in with the aesthetics.
