Barrell Craft Spirits “Seagrass” 16 Year Old vs. Original

  • With the success of the original no age statement, $85 Seagrass Rye, Barrell Craft Spirits has released a $250 16-year-old version of it. Unlike its younger brother that’s created using rye whiskeys sourced from Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Canada, the 16 year only uses Canadian Rye. Both versions have the rye finished separately in Martinique Rhum Agricole casks, apricot brandy casks, and Madeira barrels. This 16-year-old has a batch of 7,710 bottles being released at a whopping 130.82 proof! There is a small “1” on the front label to indicate a batch number, so I expect there will be a few more to follow. While the original Seagrass doesn’t have an age statement, it’s no slouch at a cask strength of 118.4 proof. Like the 16, this original bottle is also from Batch 1. Now let’s taste these side-by-side and see how they stack up to each other.

    I have batch 7 of the regular Seagrass and just knew I had to purchase the 16 yr (batch #2) when I found it discounted at one of my local liquor stores for $139.99 🎉 I have not opened it yet and was pleasantly surprised when you had both side by side in your review so thank you for the content! #subscribed!

    This offering has been a little bit polarizing among the folks I've shared it with. I personally like the Seagrass NAS. Perhaps you could consider doing a heads up match with the 16 year Seagrass and Found North Batch-1 16 year or the Batch 3, if you can't source the Batch 1. Thanks Chris cheers!

    I just can’t see myself spending that money on a 16 year old Canadian rye. I could get two bottles of Nashville barrel proof rye barrel single barrel pick for less than that $250. Sure, it’s younger whiskey and not as refined, but man what an oily full bodied tour de force of a rye. Gets me hoppin’

    I was about to buy a bottle of Ledaig today, but now I'm wondering if I should try the Seagrass Original.

    I recently did a comparison with 9 or so ryes, and while I wasn't surprised Seagrass was near the top, I was surprised my friend and I both liked the unfinished Barrell Rye Batch 3 better.
    I'd say the rye in Batch 3 is superior to the rye in Seagrass and that won out over the (very well done) barrel finishing of Seagrass.

    Love the original seagrass but I can't see me pulling the trigger on the 16 year. Excellent head to head . Cheers 🥃

    Funkiness? Where have I heard that word before as a whisky descriptor?

    As always, an excellent video. One word of caution from my experience for anyone purchasing the 16-year version - the box design is in my opinion flawed. The bottle itself sits in a cardboard base that a cardboard sleeve slides over from above and provides no support from the bottom. This means if you pick the box up by grasping the sides and do not place your hand underneath the bottom, the weight of the bottle combined with gravity can actually cause the base/bottle to start to slide out and potentially fall to the floor.

    Hey Chris have you heard which Batch # of Seagrass is the best so far? I think they're up to Batch #7 right now.

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  2 года назад +1

      I haven’t heard or been able to make a definitive decision yet. Since #5 was good (but slightly sweeter), I’m guessing they’ll all be similar and rely heavily on the apricot brandy barrels. So as long as they have fresh barrels, they should be able to keep that up awhile. Cheers!

    Most important question was left unanswered: is it worth splurging 3-4 X to try the age statement version?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  2 года назад +2

      Its a different experience, but it is expensive. Like most people, I’ve always enjoyed the regular one, so I’d be perfectly happy with just it. Cheers!
