Mr Amos came to our school assembly in the early 80's, when I attended P.S. 30 Queens (in Queens NY), while in elementary school. Depending on how many books you read over the summer, that's how many free bags of his cookies you got. He was the first celebrity I had ever met😊.

His story is the story of many blacks that have lost the 'big deal' many don't stay focused on the business aspects of being in the business many don't read the small print or hire an attorney to look over the contract and if they do most of the time it's after the deal is done and the contract is signed. I even know if you have a business and sell it if you don't want your picture included you have to exclude it prior to signing the contract because once it's signed it includes everything including your picture which in many cases is the selling point. Famous Amos smiled a lot but didn't understand business, he should've taken courses in understanding the business thoroughly or hired someone to do just that. Wow, he lost millions and those cookies were really good but, they don't taste the same today and are full of preservatives. Another case of live and learn.

I live in Honolulu and many times run into Wally Amos at the car wash and at the Farmers Market. I frequented his cookie store in Kailua and thought he made a big mistake by opening a second store at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center one of the most expensive rents in USA which eventually ended up closing all of his stores. He started making and selling his cookies at our local Costco Stores before going into Shark Tank where unfortunately no Shark wanted to invest in him. He eventually moved to the mainland where he started Aunt Dellas Cookie Company and the muffin company. He no longer has these companies but I’ve still been following if he will ever startup anything so I can at least go online to purchase his products. He’s a good man and always thoughtful about young children. He used to always give kids his cookies while waiting for his car at the car wash and you could always notice him because of his colorful hat and shirt.
