Excited for this 1st gen product! Even more excited to see what the industry does in answer to the parawing. Only going to get better and cheaper from here.
@@hydrofoilacademy yes beautiful content, could you please explain a little bit more about the the modifications? - (what to buy and how to make the board leash on the back? ) 🙏
Nice to know that everything I thought about this new windsport is pretty much true. I agree, it's going to go somewhere. Personally, looking forward to largely replacing the deflate downwinder. Nothing beats the feeling of the paddle up, but the wing deflate still feels wrong, even after a year. Thanks Gav.
Gav, great review. Which size would you suggest for Sydney's Northern Beaches? Sounds like the 4m is the upper limit for manageability / pack down, but wondering if it's enough on our typical NE seabreeze days (13-17kts)? I'm guessing you'd be sweet on the 4m or even 2.9m during our strong southerlies.
Thanks mate. Look, it’s such a difficult question to answer. I got the 5m for that reason (our NEers) but it’s hard to pack away. Not impossible but hard. I’m finding the 2.9 is working well in our southerlies. If I were to get one it would probably be the 5 for our conditions. It’s still very new to me and I’m still figuring it out too.
Excellent review, great insights and interesting to follow, thank You… In Germany, we have a handkite manufacturer named Born Kites. Traditionally for streetboarding. He has already a Foilkite in production.
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I’ve been watching this. Not sure if they will have the same R&D in the water environment as the BRM. Will be interesting.
Your welcome mate. I've heard rumblings that some of the big manufacturers are in the final phases of development! I don't think it will be long before we see them on the market.
Thank you, exactly the review I was looking for! So what size would you recommend for a gusty inland lake 10knots wind, 20 in the gust with a 6'0 100l board and 85kg bodyweight? Just wanna replace the paddle to get on foil then take the train back upwind 😇 5m? 4m? Also can you completely pack the 5m away in the pouch?
Thanks mate! That’s such a different question to answer. To be honest I don’t think you can get away with just one. I’d get the 4m to learn on and accept you need 15kts-25kts as a minimum. Then you can add from there. The smaller the BRM the more fun it is. It’s really hard work to pack away the 5. I normally just hold onto it. The 4 is ok to pack away and the 2.9 is easy.
I’d love to try one but as they don’t go up wind (that I know of) I don’t want to buy one. I’ve got an Ensis Roger coming soon. That will be my next one.
Thanks mate. I've been doing around 1km upwind as I want the practice of putting it away. But to be honest, i'm not sure I will go much further. Just do that 1 km over and over. Just hang out where the bumps are best! This is where it comes into its own.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I’ve been using the parawings for a short time now and I agree in everything you say but in the upwind performance. My current impression is that it is way less efficient than a normal wing. A 5 min upwind on a standard wing would turn into a 15 min run with the parawing. Maybe I’m still lacking some parawing skills, maybe the kite was not in the sweet spot wing range. Could you share what things you learned that helped get more out of the parawing? Thanks!
Hi mate. Yes, I was like this for a while the trick is that it needs to be trimmed perfectly and nicely powered up. Make sure you have a harness and play with the position to ensure it sits forward in the wind window. Also you need a size and wind strength to get the most out of it. You want to feel very powered and lean into it with the harness. It’s then all about the upwind technique. Driving off the foil with your feet, looking upwind etc. I’m finding now I am going upwind as good as people on wind wings. They often comment on this when we come in off the beach. Keep working on it. You’ll get there. I think the next generation of parawings will have a higher aspect ratio and have much better upwind performance.
@@hydrofoilacademy thanks a lot. I think the key is being fully powered. I tend to sail with the minimum possible wind wing (4mts on 10 to 11 knots wind despite my 93kg) and tend to replicate that with the parawing. As per you comment, this works better fully powered. I’ve been fully powered with the parawing before but just for a short period of time as it feels pretty uncomfortable. I’ll try with a harness as you recommend. Thanks again for sharing your experience
Yes I agree, it’s expensive but you’re not just paying for the materials when purchasing it’s the countless hours of r&d and innovation. Interestingly I’m going to test the cheaper Borne Wave Star soon so let’s see if it can be done cheaper. In comparison to the crazy cost of wind wings it’s actually a cheaper option! When the big brands jump on board and start producing it will be interesting to see where they price it.
@@hydrofoilacademy 1000usd gives a foil kite in 8m size. Talking here FS or Ozone. R&D and construction much more complex. these parawings should not cost more than 200usd. (actually 110usd can get you Pansh Hawk that in those winds flies prerry good)
I will agree the price is insane. But they’re the only ones doing it. And from my basic understanding, the only one that’s easier to use and goes upwind well. The first computer want cheap. Now we have em in our pocket and a raspberry pi can be had for under $40.
@@hydrofoilacademyI found another person making a video and testing it while it can work the problem is the air tubes in the Rainer when the water gets in them.
I like your waist board leash integration, but I’d be worried about the plastic buckles snapping and losing the board. I’ve reverted to a koahli invisi leash attached to my calf for that reason. Consider making a small harness line with a piece of 4mm dyneema shock cord and the brm attachment. The play in the shock cord feels amazing. I tried running my bulky wing harness monoline once and it weight almost as much as the bar itself! The 4mm line feels perfect.
I actually took the waist board leash from my old kite harness. The attachment points are titanium so they are solid. The reason why I don’t use a leg rope is that you have to switch your feet using the BRM to get the most of upwind performance. That’s a good point about the harness line! I’m going to try this! Thank you.
$1000+ dollars for a trainer kite is a little ridiculous. You could buy a sewing machine, pay for a class on how to sew, buy all the fabric and lines, make 5-6 kites to get it just right and still be under $1000.
@@hydrofoilacademy speaking of trainer kites, apart from the line and bar arrangement, how much does this fundamentally differ from a trainer kite design?
Hi, super your feedback and I like the tips about « organising » the belt… Very smart ! By the way, I am wing foiling and I hesitate to buy a belt… what are your recommendations ? THX I’ll continue to enjoy your videos
I think you need some way of packing away the wing so if you have any alternative system with a harness hook attached, that would be the go. I'm sure pople will start making their own soon. But for now, I use the belt every session. It's super handy to have it packed away when you paddle out too. Hope that helps.
thank you for this honest review. Honestly, you are starting to put out some quality content out there. Congrats! Keep these videos coming!

Exactly, I think this time next year there will be lots of options and at a cheaper price. Still, I take my hat off to BRM for being the pioneer.
Excellent job Gav’ ! Love it. Can’t wait to try this parawing.
Thanks 👍. Let me know how you go
Thanks! Good real world Review! Especially Knowing the wind range was really useful !
