Hear me out. What if she was in love with his mom but due to a bad childhood she had daddy issues and just wanted to be accepted by other men, which caused all the affairs. His mom was straight and she didn't feel the same way, she fell in love and had a marriage and a son but got ill and tragically died. The step mother married the husband because of his money and because she either wanted to pretend that the friend she was in love with is still there and she wanted to know the man that loved her till her last days. He gets into a car accident and dies, which leaves her with nothing but the son who is the result of the relationship her friend and the man had and for that she despises him. Then the following events displayed in the video occur. The end! A quite tragic end.

I think him saying "let me treat your neck," was not only about the bruises, but could be similar to him saying "let me love/save you cause we're in this together." She not only got choke marks from her lovers who some could say she was using to replace his dad, but they sort of represent how she losing herself and hurting. So him saying he wanted to help treat her neck sorta meant he wanted to heal from the grief with her. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it :)

The pain he went through is terrible and relatable in a way. The person you want to rely on to take care of you, won’t even let you call them mother. At the same time, I feel for the lady. She probably just doesn’t know how to take care of him, as she didn’t get that affection growing up. She even left him the money that his father left behind. However, it doesn’t excuse the neglect of him. It was cruel of her.

Y O yes, but, it would be hard. That’s what deprivation does - like EDD ( emotional deprivation disorder ), in which you don’t feel love from your parents/people that you care about / don’t receive care from them, and so on your older years you don’t feel love for anyone ( my apologies if I got that a bit wrong.) Deprivation of care and affection can go a long way.

There's this one part at like 1:58-1:59. There's this spilt second when you see his bio mom and then it shows his dad being helpless because I assume the mom dead or left. So maybe she feels guilty about taking his real mom's place and so she tells him not to call her mom but Madame.
When you think about it her coldness makes a bit more sense.
Just a theory though, I don't know, so unless the creator says something. Guess it will stay a theory.

When she blink her eyes twice, we witnessed a scene where his father introduce his previous wife to her, so she probably known him before he even got married.
The most suitable answer for me is that she had fallen for his father quite a while ago, yet when he chose another woman (his old wife), she was devastated and started to became depraved. She dyed her hair pink and cover herself in a debauched life, just like how she did when his father died.
And about the child, we can guess that she saw the reflection of the old wife in his child, she was obsessed with that image of her to the point she couldn't love his child, especially when he smiled. He looks like a copy of his mother.
So it kinda like how they look in the third person POV, remind me of those villain stories nowadays. Tbh I can understand how she acted like that, but she can't blame all of her conflicted feelings on an innocent victim, the child in this one.
But you know what is the most upset scene if that theory was true?? He dyed his hair pink and started to dig in that debauched lifestyle, just like how his stepmother did. He stepping on her footsteps again, since he was treated as an child who is underserved of love.

It hard cause in the end, he ends up becoming like her. The parental figure who never seems to care, while you achieve so much for them, just so you could take care of each other someday, ends up leaving. Without guidance, he doesn't know what else to do, when he feels so useless because he wasn't enough for anyone to stay. This is my interpretation, but it's harsh when you think this could have been avoided.

I actually love this animatic so much, something that I noticed was when you see the mother with that man, you can see money on the bed. This means that she is very selfless, think about it. When she was given that money from the dad, she could've left the child and ran with the money. But she only used it for him, and when he was a old enough, would give him all the money for him to make his decisions with the money. She would make her own money by letting men do whatever they want to her. So, she never once used the money given to her by the father, for herself but only for him. I think the mother was cold to the son because she never wanted to have children. But she knew she couldn't abandon him.
Edit: I have seen from the replies saying that even though it was not physical abuse, it was still abuse. Which, looking back I do agree and I also have always agreed that she was definitely not a good mother/guardian. The takeaway that I have gathered after rewatching and reading comments now 5 months later is that I think while she was definitely selfless, she was also selfish and definitely could've handled the situation better but, we all make mistakes and there will always be things that we wish we could've done better.

God dammit that line about how she can't love him hit me hard. I struggle with love and affection a lot so it's hard for me to love people. Even people I've known my entire life. I can't even imagine any of my step family as my real family because of it. The mom sucks, but I understand how it feels to think you should love someone when you just can't.

I think the scene in the last part where he dyed his hair pink is similar to the fact that he wanted to be treated as his step mom's own child. He probably thought that if maybe his physical characteristics were same to that of his step mom, then maybe she would have loved him equally. The step mom had pink hair so he dyed it pink in the end idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
and also he may have choked himself too because he wanted to resemble his step mother who also had those marks around her neck
How I interpret this: the kid had to deal with his parents seperating at a young age, the dad got married again to a woman who didn’t like kids, she even grew to hate them, specifically taking all of her issues out on the kid. She was cold towards the kid which was the opposite of what he needed considering he was already dealing with a lot. Kids that young need love and nurturing. They need to know that they are loved and safe, if a child is deprived of that it can severely damage them. Then his father died. Both were heartbroken. Unfortunately this means the kid no longer has any loving support figure. The mother copes by getting with many different men in a desperate attempt to try and fill some sort of void that was left in her heart. The kid is not getting the love he needs, he knows what his mom is doing and it hurts him that she does this and cares more about everyone else than him, leaving him feeling completely worthless. The mother only persists, as the boy grows up he still tries to get her approval, he still tries to show kindness to her in hopes of getting some sort of gratitude but she refuses to let this hatred go and now what was once a coping mechanism has become a nearly unbreakable habit. The son finally gets away from her but is having a very difficult time dealing with everything so he turns to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as smoking. He can’t get her out of his mind, he subconsciously (and consciously sometimes) begins to become more and more like her. Even though he hates her, he still tries to be like her, whether that be because he is still somehow seeking her approval, or he just wanted to know what it was like to be in her shoes in an attempt to try to understand her, or some other terrible turn of events that led to this.

If you look at the mothers flashback too, when she blinks, it shows that she was friends with the father and his bio mom before they had the kid. Then when bio mom, I assume dies, the father comes to her in tears. So, it was a jealousy of the woman he chose over her that made her hate the kid I think.

Its so subtle but you can tell he really looked up to his stepmom and cared about her. he tried to give her mothers day gifts, tried to treat her wounds, kept trying to call her mom, and ended up becoming like her in the process. sort of like a reverse projection situation?
I think she does care about him, seeing how she could've stayed with her late husband's money and done whatever she wanted with it. Instead she chose to do the right thing and save it. After seeing money on the bed, it's even possible that she was avoiding using the father's money by selling herself. She also gave him a weekly allowance when again, she didn't have to. She left once he was an adult, when she could've given him up for adoption when her husband died. I think she knew the kid's mother, and felt guilty when she saw how much the kid resembled her (maybe she felt it wasn't her place to be his mother, she felt she was taking a role that belonged to someone else). Definitely not saying what she did was right, but just saying she does care about him.

This song gives me a vibe that is...really something else, the fact that the topic Is so dark but the guitar so soft, the tone of it so cheerful, it makes such a complex atmosphere it's crazy
So from what I can gather, the kids mom died when he was little, and the dad who took it too hard ended up marrying a very young woman. (honestly she looks like she's barely 22 which is why I'm saying this) Judging by the brief shot we see of her looking at the kid and seeing a blond haired woman, the dad and a baby, I would say that she and the kids mom knew eachother. Judging by the fact that she looks at the kid coldly, I would guess that perhaps she always loved his dad, but then the kids mom came and stole him away from her.
As for why she dislikes the kid, I wouldn't say that it's because she hates kids or anything, I would say that it's due to the fact that the kid looks a lot like his mom. So she's reminded of her everytime they make eye contact, hence why she always glared at him as a kid, and why she threw away his gift. It wasn't because of not liking kids, but the gift probably rubbed in the fact that she didn't get him before the mom did. I also get hints throughout, such as with the allowance she gives him as a kid, and the fact that she probably got most of the money from selling her body instead of spending the kids money, that she is trying to like the kid, but she doesn't quite know how to. So it comes across as being cold and heartless. As for the kid, you can tell that he does care about her, and can probably see that she just doesn't know how to care about him, hence why not only is he not so much mad at her for not saying goodbye, he's just hurt. Which then leads to his substance abuse issues, and him dying his hair pink and choking himself, two things which remind him of her.

Yeah, though I think the sympathy is more of towards just reasoning. A reason for everything, but should never be seen as an excuse sort of thing. I feel bad for people in her position but it should never be used as an excuse for wrong actions.
I disagree.. My parents split a few times, and at no point did I expect my fathers new girlfriend to be like a mother to me. Children dont require two parents, many already only have one and grow up just fine. Someones love life is their own, and you dont get to own your parents love life, whether you like it or not. Of course their new partner needs to be alright with your existence, and get along with you, but saying they need to be prepared to be your parent is pretty selfish imo. Like I said, you dont own your parent's love life.

I've lived with 2 of my mother's partners and I thought of the first one as my dad for a long time, for the second one I was older and didn't really care if he liked me or not. Little kids deserve love.

Everyone's over here picking sides and all I can think of is that this is just life. There wasn't really a bad guy in this. Not every step parent is ready to be a step parent, and while maybe she shouldn't have been with a guy who had a kid-- maybe his dad shouldn't have gotten together with someone who wasn't good with kids? And at the same time, while she wasn't good with him, and didn't want to be his mother, she made sure he didn't lose out.
Too many times, a kid who has a rich inheritance will be taken advantage of by their caretaker, even by their lawyer. She used the money his father left for him solely on him and gave him complete access at 18. She stayed all through his growing years to make sure that that was taken care of.
And a sad part of my brain wonders if she did that just to fulfill a promise to his dad, and if maybe she reckoned that now that Nikolai was an adult... she could just disappear and stop existing. She was clearly suffering from depression all that time.
But again, this is just how life is sometimes. Sometimes, everyone's a little bit shitty and sometimes we all end up a little bit hurt and messed up.

There is human decency to show affection, not just do duties. The kid did not deserve it. There are many awful parents and they should be held accountable whenever parenting is done bad. An adult is more responsible than a child. If she could consider being with a man with kid and not imagine him as part of life, there is a fault in that. Understanding things don't make it execusable, she rejected his efforts to be nice when he got her flowers. That is heartless. One could still be a friend to someone they can't be parent to.

It's really interesting, honestly even if it may seem like the woman is a bit of a "villain" in this. Tbh, she's as much of a victim as the kid. Having lost a lover/partner someone she cared about as clearly showen by the tears and held back emotions she tried to shield herself from this ever again happening. Whilst this may not fully excuse her actions to some, still it has to be pointed out along with the fact she seemed rether young or at least unprepared for what was coming for her. Motherhood, Family life, things some don't think about untill their 30 or 40.
To add further, some people dont wanna have or care for kids, not like theres anything wrong w that; tho its pretty unfortunate for the woman to be in a relationship w a person that has a kid because not only its unfair for the woman but its also unfair for the father and son. Everyone gets a short end of the stick in these cases

Sometimes you don't find out untill its to late, or you try to push yourself for the person you love even though you fully know that you'll probably never feel connected to that child. In the animation we could see after all that she was at least to some extent, okey with the kid whilst the father was there. By no means was she motherly or all that loving but she did try and lie to herself even if just a bit. Sure did it seem cruel at times? Maybe, or yes to be honest. But again, she is a victim in this too. Maybe not as much as the kid to you but still, everyone sees things differently, try and look at it from her perspective.

Still, kids are a very big topic, they require money, love, attention, time and years of growth which a lot of people (like the woman in the video) aren't ready to give, maybe some parts like the money aspect but when it comes to attention and love or even warmth, its hard. You can't force yourself to love someone or something, you didn't even know existed untill then or really thought about. Its sad, yes but there are loads of people out there like that right now in the world. Its not pretty or good though even so, they keep going. Everyone to some extent sees themselves as a victim in those situations. The child for being neglected/abused, the "mother" (woman) for being trapped in a relationship she didn't sign up for and even the dad. He probably thought that now that his child had a mom, they would be more happy, they could be a normal family. But it didn't happen.

I remember when I was younger, I watched this and looked at Julia as a selfish, malicious, disgusting person. And she did make some terrible choices that negatively affected Nikolai. But looking at it now, she fought her own demons and tried to still take care of him despite herself. That doesn't get rid of years of neglect, but I don't see her as evil anymore.

At the end, it hit me so hard how he ultimately became what he was exposed to for so many years until she left. He became her splitting image. That would be the most common interpretation, but I had another thought while I was processing this.
What if that short moment of a dark screen was the hint that years have passed, and what if instead of becoming her, he was trying to live in her shoes during that time he had with her to understand her disposition? In the end she never told him why she acted the way she did, thus perhaps he was trying to figure it out by going through what she did to know how she felt at the time.

i think this is a story about the cycle of abuse. he’s growing into what he saw as a kid, even when that behavior scarred him. at least that was my interpretation of it! as someone with bad parental models, its something i personally am trying to break.

This kid actually went through all that and in the end, he finally understood how she felt this whole time. He and she both had no idea how to treat each other and when the dad dies, it just got worse. He needed a mother figure and she needed a man but they had no idea what their role was to each other. They tried their best but it failed but the thing that surprised me was how the kid in the end realized what she was going through.
Fun fact: after this video I got very obsessed with the song and became a huge fan of the band

She craved for love from multiple relationships, but unable to find it. Then the child turned 18 and she had her reason to leave, which left a hole in the child (now a man)’s heart since she was the only one he had. Now he’s craving for love just as she was :’(

There's no way that she would have felt more loss than the boy (She just had a relationship with the dad, while the son was literally a product of the dad and his dead/uncaring mom.) There's nobody that would feel the effects of losing both the parents more than the son. Even if he didn't show it immediately, it clearly became a long-term problem that he was unloved because of who he eventually grew up to be (If we can tell anything from the last shot). Even though he tried to love her like a parent, she just continually shut him down until he was old enough for her to finally just leave for good. (0:41)

Well guys some might not think of this but in my opinion, his new mother were actually his late mother's sister/cousin/bestfriend but she was also fall in love with his father even his father married with his late mother. But one day his late mother give birth to him, she died and his father met her new mother with tears as you can see at minute 1:56 as his new mother remember him as his father.
She was feeling guilty because marrying with someone she's adore/close ex husband and when she saw him, a child from his husband and her late sister/cousin/bestfriend seeds, she can't bare it if she replacing his mother so she became cold to him for respect his late mother. She's not even use his allowance money for her own goods. She care about him and he know it but probably didn't know his new mother relationship with his late mother so he thought that it was his fault for not focus on his new mother's mental condition until it was too late. So he's following his new mother's habit to feel how's his new mother felt after his father died.

When the boy offers to treat her neck and we are put in her eyes then we see his dad and biological mother pregnant and happily together but his mom passed when he was a baby or during childbirth. Sooo I think "Madame" Knew the shoes she had to fill in order to be his mom but not wanting to commit to being a mother made her react coldy cause she knew she didn't want and/or being called mom. *shrugs*
