Wizard is about healing from trauma and then in turn helping others to heal, with magic representing kindness and hope. I think that's why it resonates so strongly for some while other don't seem to like it at all. Either the premise speaks to you or it doesn't I suppose.
While I can understand why some would find this series boring ( it does drag at times) I still enjoyed the series. Plus, I enjoy the fact the main villain isn't who you thought it was or that their main goal isn't your typical World Domination plot but a grieving man who is so desperate to have his child back, he will do ANYTHING to accomplish it. And I find the storyline with Gremlin to be very interesting in that he seems the most human until you learn the truth about who he was and then realize that him becoming a Phantom was very fitting indeed.
The most important thing when watching these is to remember that these aren't a play by play of the entire series. They are a subjective reveiw of the series and if you havent seen these seasons(I havent seen wizard yet but this makes me want to watch it) then they should be treated as a jumping off point at best. If you havent seen the series yet you need to watch some of it before you can form your opinion of it.
I hate that its a common take that Wizard was too OP at first. Comparing him to characters like Kabuto and Geats. I dont think they noticed that the first many episodes of Wizard he is just fighting common mooks with way less power than him.
After watching various crossover movies before watching any actual shows (definitely a mistake in hindsight), I decided to watch Kamen Rider Wizard as my first Kamen Rider show. I finished it a few hours ago at the time of this comment. I thought it was good overall (I would give it an 8/10). The characters were likable, the Phantoms were enjoyable vile, the action and music were spectacular (Life Is Showtime lives rent-free in my head now), and I adored the aesthetics. My only problem was the two part format and Wiseman being a meh vilian. Does anyone have recommendations on which series to start next?
Build, Gaim, Ex aid, OOO, Drive, are great to go, if you want another thats similar feel to wizard, strongly say Fourze as i think it does power of friendship the best, Saber, Gotchard, and Ghost are also there
The one thing that I don’t like about wizard, is the plain donuts with mayonnaise thing. I know that started because of this season, and I just don’t understand why people have to put those two things together instead of having them separately. Nito is a confusing character simply because of the mayonnaise thing. That’s it.
I kind of hope that, when rider gets to it’s 55th anniversary, they bring back releases of legendary riders that Zio started with the legend Rider series of RKF.
I wouldn’t mind getting an alternate reality spin off of wizard, where Haruto it’s chocolate donuts, instead of plain sugar ones, and Nito is obsessed with mustard, or ranch dressing or something.
Most Kamen Rider jingles are dogshit. Wizard has my favorite henshin and design but that fucking jingle can't be ignored. Same thing with Zero-One. I'm okay with most of his jingle but the ending where some American guy says a line; that's just awful.
I appreciate Shunpei for being an assistant that acts as crowd control and escort for innocent people so that Haruto can focus on fighting the Phantoms. Yeah, Shunpei is clumsy and silly, but he does his best with what he has.
Regardless of how much bad outweighs the good, I still love Wizard. I wish it got more love for the plot and story plot more to make it solid good. But sadly I just don't know why or how but this was screwed up. It's really sad. But still, I enjoy Wizard. I love Hope vs Despair. I love Haruto/Wizard, I love the Phantoms, I love the magic rings and the epic moments. THE SONGS... but still, I wished Wizard was grander. Still, I had fun with Wizard. It didn't piss me off like Ryuki.
there's a few hints of their romance in episode 1 when haruto gets arrested by rinko he tried to flirt with her by giving a cute nickname then haruto tells her he will give her hope if she's ever falls to despair then rinko gets flattered hearing that in episode 2 when rinko goes to the antique shop she meets with koyomi and koyomi tells her about his origins after finding out his origins she admired haruto due to his selfless nature she becomes more determined to protect people from phantoms even without magic in episode 23 after phoenix beats up rinko haruto gets angry for what happened to her so angry that haruto kicks phoenix's ass to the sun after their final battle rinko tells haruto she needs to be more careful protecting people from phantom then she assured that haruto will always protect her that her final hope will always by his side

I know i am coming in late, but i am just discovering your content. Wizard was the first Kamen Rider i watched week to week through fansubs. And to this day i still love it. The fact that it is so mundane was it's biggest charm to me. It kept it grounded and relatable to me which is important in keeping with the theme trauma. I don't think this theme would have translated as well if it were bigger, louder or more bombastic. And Haruto being more subdued lends to that (not to ignore it seems haruto's name being so close to heart). Some ones last hope isn't usually depicted as a raging fire it is usually and ember to keep just enough heat until it can ignite a new flame. And i think that is what Wizard is or at least how i see it. It is a small more personal rider series to hopefully spark something in those who watch it and resonate it.
I really hope one day they would consider to bring Kamen Rider Wizard back to life once again for a sequel or a new movie in a much darker settings, new villains, new saga, new riders like Necromancer and Witch, and so many things that can be done. Or in an animated form like what they did to Kamen Rider W. Seriously, Kamen Rider Wizard deserves more recognition and it has a special place in my heart for being my most favourite Kamen Rider ever. Not to mention, it has the most unique features among of all the Riders I’ve known. His infinity form is what caught my attention the most. Just pure badass. Kinda reminds me of the Kamen Rider version of Dante from DMC while his Infinity form reminds me of Vergil too.
My favourite scene is not the fight scenes one of my favourite episodes is the one where they meet the actress and they teach how hope and the truth are not always aligned. Another episode I love is the episode with Haruto's teacher and the plane, showing how blind someone can be to someone elses needs in moments of selfishness, and how you need people like Shuunpei, and Haruto's teacher in that episode to break you out of that.
Wizard is one of my favorite Kamen Rider series. I enjoy it from start to finish. It really is ridiculous how much hate it gets or how much people are bored with it. To me, there is no bad Kamen Rider series, though Hibiki is probably my least favorite. My favorite Kamen Rider is OOO most definitely.
Also, Marco, I feel like you were pretty even handed in this review. I liked Wizard a lot when I watched it the first time and I am a little concerned to go back and try it again. I do, however, think it's awful the way almost everyone in the western community holds this up as the worst season. Your opinion seemed very reasonable.
My favorite moment was in the first episode when Haruto was arrested and he look at the detective and said. "But why?" Idk why but that just made me smile.
I'm glad that Wizard gets the right amount of respect for the insert theme (all of the Rider Chips songs were all straight up bangers and Rider Girls were on point) and Life is Showtime is one of my all time favorites I am one of the few that really enjoyed Beast from start to finish. The fight choreography is top notch.

Fact: The reason Koyomi didn't get as much screentime and character development as she deserved, is because her actress; Makoto Okunaka was juggling her idol career with her role in Wizard. Being an idol and being an actress are both equally demanding jobs, so the smart thing to do would've been to choose one or the other. Okunaka thought she could do both, and as a result; Wizard consisted mostly of filler. Okunaka's naive/idiotic decision reminds me a lot of when Nando from the "Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl" anime decided to be both a Pokémon Coordinator and participate in the Sinnoh League. And what ended up happening to Nando? He got his ass handed to him by Ash on a solid gold plate in the Sinnoh League's preliminary rounds. God forbid I ever get a position of power at Toei, because I would issue an ultimatum to future actresses to prevent another decision like Okunaka's. Either the actress fully committed to the show, or I (or by extention, Toei) would find someone else that would. And this is all coming from someone who also finds Wizard to be a rather basic season.
i would argue that much of the blame also falls on her agency for not realizing the conflict that would have happened sooner and should have either prevented her from taking up the role themselves or simply exclude her from idol schedules until she was done with filming. when it comes to idol-actors nowadays, it seems as if the companies simply don't care about whether or not an idol has other obligations they've taken up and continue to pile on work for them regardless of the consequences. considering idol companies tend to control every other aspect of their career, and Japanese entertainment agencies in general are quite strict when it comes to managing, i find it odd and somewhat careless that they'd allow that to happen. imo i would rather not have idol actors/actresses in general for anything more than occasional side characters due to this (although it worked in W), cause it seems like it automatically takes a lower priority in their scheduling. It's a shame that Kamen Rider in particular gets hit with these issues when we have sentai where we've had two consecutive seasons now with idol-actors who are fully committed to the part.

ok personally (i know you guys may harshly disagree with me) but wizard was my favourite kamen rider along with gaimu and fourze (the series) yes wizard can have some boring scenes and yea but i just wanna know, at the very start you were complementing like everything but at the end your really downing wizard. to me wizard was my favourite, just the tranformations and rings and everything, but hey thats just me. everyone can have their opinions unlike *cough cough* vegan teacher *cough cough*
Ah yes, every transformation devices in Tokusatsu is called a morpher. Just like how every giant robot in fiction is either called a Transformer or a Megazord. Ultraman's Beta Capsule? That's a morpher. The Gundam? That's a Transformer. GaoGaiGar? Oh you bet, that thing is a Megazord.

I like the magic and episodic theme. And I allways remember the 2 episodes about being Shunpei and Rinko suspects running away with a Gate. And the teacher of Haruto looking for the old memory of his passed child. (And the special final xover, the idea than riders are almost or failed monsters is fine)

In my most honest opinion, I think Wizard Felt Hollow, in the sense that the "Hope" and "Despair" concepts felt kind of Superficial. For someone who is supouse to represent hope I didn't feel it from Haruto, I still like his character, but not as a representation of Hope... I don't really know how to explain it, I only know that's how I felt. In general Wizard felt too much like "Tell not Show" when it should have been more of a "Show don't Tell" Wizard IDEAS were really interesting concepts but the execution was meh, it definitly could have been better. Like camon, Monsters born from Human Despair? With most cases being about breaking the victim Emotionally and Psycologically to be born? That's dark sh*t. And the MC as someone who has overcome Despair and fights to give that same hope he hold into, to people? It sounds So Good, but I don't think Wizard delivered... From Wizard the character story I remember the most is the Extroverted lady that had like so many friends from a lot of her different hobbies and how the Phantom actually made people, even her husband hate her for being annoying and having Haruto give her Hope staying by her side telling her something that helped. _Or something like that,_ I don't remember much (its been a while already since I watched Wizard). But I have a feeling and the fainted memory, that there, there was a moment I actually felt Haruto was a beacon of Hope for anyone, as we are told. Even if at the end she almost loses it (if I'm not mistaken). But yeah, the Opening is a fantastic song and the Suit and Visuals were really cool, my problem with Wizard comes mostly from the execution of its Theme 👌 Side Note edit: Trying to remember more of the show and give it more thought after writing, maybe what was missing for me, is seeing Haruto be more Emotionally envolve with the other Gates, he is suppose to be Hope because he is someone who went through the worst Despair and overcome it, so I think we were missing Haruto showing his Sympathy, showing us he genuinely understands all the victims very well and that's why he is determined to help them... I think I never felt the weight of his words when he says "I will be your Hope"
I can agree that Wizard has some great fights and some style but I didn't like it because the story never grabbed and took me for a ride. With Fourze as basic as it is I went on a journey of friendship with friends, or Kiva taking me through a story of people's music, but Wizard never had a story in mind to tell which couldn't make me care about what was going on. I honestly believe that a good (not fantastic, just decent) story can elevate the rest of the show if done right but Wizard's lack of story really relagates it to its negative status.
Some people don't like this series but there was something about it that I found charming and it became one of my favorite Rider shows. But I understand it's not for everyone.
recently finished Wizard and I am finding it weird hearing your many complaints about the season honestly more with Nitou I really enjoyed his character, and lets be honest, who doesn't love a secondary rider than isn't the predictible super serious guy ( still loving Meteor from Fourze as I write this part )
I love wizard and the reason is haruto. hes cool afI like heroes that are like him- calm collected, sarcastic, and earnest. its why I like certain versions of batman. My favorite moment is one you left behind grimlins backstory- the way it swerves you making you think he might have originally been a good guy and then goes in so far the other extreme it made me scream outloud I couldnt handle how good it works; I had the advantage of watching these at my own pace and Im a binge watcher me and my Boyfriend watch them together cause he likes my reactions; tbh wizard is one of my top 10 like you said it never gets to peirce the better shows so I agree that it kinda skips along for along while, but I like the suits, themes, villain's and harutos ethos enough to keep me invested.
I think Kamen Rider Wizard is probably one of my favorite rider costumes......EXCEPT for the rings. I have never been big on rings personally and the ones used in the show are of course, supposed to be children's toys. Otherwise the mask and suit designs, especially with the magic theme are REALLY good.
Wizard is honestly one of my favorites. I watched it early on in my toku experience and then I rewatched it later. What I love so much is the visual style the show has. All the suits look real cool. The music is also probably my favorite in all of KR. Not just the insert themes, but the incidental music has actually stuck with me more than any other series. I don't really absorb character depth or story beats as well with subtitled shows as I would English speaking ones, so with KR it's mostly about how a series makes me feel than what I actually remember of the plot or interactions. This show just makes me smile when I see it and hear the themes.
Wizard is up there with my five favorite Rider seasons I’ve seen so far. I love the magic, the characters minus Shunpei, the hyper active fighting that fuels me, Life is Showtime being my favorite intro and the suits are awesome. Wiseman being the absolute best.

Honestly. I think Kamen Wizard should’ve tied Both Wisemen and Sorcerer’s story together. I know Wizard in Magic Land is it’s own thing. But think about it! Where did Fuuki (Wisemen) get the knowledge to turn himself into a Phantom!? Specifically the Carbuncle Phantom! Wouldn’t make so much more sense for Sorcerer to come into the picture, and forge a contract between them where they help each other with trying to achieve their own personal goals? I mean, it would make a lot more sense, add abit more punch to the Wizard Narrative. And honestly I’d be interested in seeing Their dynamic, and It would be interesting to see Wisemen betraying Sorcerer rather than handing his daughter over! I mean, that would be awesome to see!
I understand your gripes with Wizard, and I can see why. For me tho, I truly do love Wizard. Not only for having a magic KR user fully, but a lot of the themes and messages i see from it. Of course, like you, my views are different. I was able to see hope in everything, understand why they chose to do it like this and everything else. I still love Wizard but respect your opinion.
I think the reason a lot of people like Wizard is because of the characters, the premise, and the execution of said premise. That's why asking for a favorite single moment gets a lot of the same answer. It is like asking for a single, specific, drop of water from the ocean. Single moments aren't what make Wizard fans enjoy the show, it's the entirety of Wizard. I think this is true for almost all Kamen Rider seasons too. Sure, there will always be key moments that people enjoy. But the people who love that series don't love it because of one moment; they love it because of the whole that those one moments creates.
I GUSH over the transformation of White Wizard/Kamen Rider Wiseman. It is simple perfection of every aspect (coming from someone with amatuer levels of art knowledge). To begin, the henshin jingle: it's made great alot by it being next to Wizard and Beast's loud and flashy henshin jingles that really show off the outrageous wonder of what they are, then Fueki appears and just the switch to henshin mode on the belt is immediately more muted and serious, after that the grim and commanding "Change! Now!" followed by an equally grim and serious jingle with no words. Next, his design, it's POWEFUL to look at. The elegant cowl to the roughcut gem and more sinister eyes, it all compounds to impose a powerful silhouette. This leads me to the transformation, the magic ring glides over him to transform like Wizard and Beast, but unlike them, it first reveals the form as a blacked out silhouette backlit by the spell circle, first revealing the sinister eyes and finally the full form. It's so simple, but it is among some of the best suits in all of Kamen Rider to me.
wizard is the one season ill never fully understand why its so universally beloved, literally all it has going for it is its quantities and technicalities (suit, themes, OST, choreo) everything else is just little to nothing, the 1st to maybe 2nd arc were actually ok when it was kaijin/monster of the week, since its very feel good, almost slice of life and actually carries a message in each mini subplot, they werent bad at all, the issue is when it becomes a full-on story, its seriously lackluster, regardless if its themes still make sense or not, its just a lot of "that happens" with a whole cast of "they exist", outside of Haruto and maybe Mayu, i dont see why everyone absolutely loves this cast let alone show to death
Wizard isn't one of my favorite Kamen Riders (which my top is Build followed closely by W and OOO) but it's definitely still good. The problem for most people I feel is that the show basically has two halves; the first half where they deal with monster of the week and the second half, where it's basically one long movie (or a netflix series). And unlike most examples, you could almost start someone in the second half and completely disregard the first (which isn't helped by some character intros being very basic, so you don't even need that context either). The thing is I like both halves for different reasons. The First half has a lot of tight character dramas that have a running theme of "accepting tragedy and moving on", which is where Haruto's Hopebringer comes. This is most evident in the episode with the con-artist, but also the one with the baker. Then there's the secondary theme of "finding what truly matters to you" because a lot of the Phantoms don't know what the Gates's true despair is, and sometimes even the Gates don't know either (see the episode with the film girl). The main problem here is that because these are character dramas focused on one-off characters, Haruto and Co often feel like they're just observers or contrived to be there for the sake of the show. W did this better through the focus of being a detective story, where Shotaro's investigation is interwoven into the narrative. Here, while there is investigation, most of the time it's just Haruto running about trying to keep the Phantom from being a dick to the Gate. Which is also probably where the complaint that he is a flat character comes from as for a good half (to almost a third) of the series isn't really focused on him or his journey and his involvement in all of the episodes were more or less just to punch the bad guy. Notably the good episodes from this lot often has him or someone else from the main cast teach the gate about moving on or discover something new about themselves. The second half is where the series really takes off, but the problem then comes that you had to have sit through some 30+ episodes of random shenanigans with tangential relation to this first, and that is a very hard sell for people. Even more so if you had to watch this show weekly.
Maybe you can upload the abridged content on a separate channel or something on that scale cuz it’s a real shame you went all effort for it but can’t show it
I think there is a minor five in this with Wizard's five element: Fire, water, Earth, Wind, and void (Diamond wizard). Then there are five mages the four created by a certain evil mage and the evil mage himself. And last, the five main good guy cast but it has been years since I've seen Wizard so I could be wrong. Wait, I screwed up. With Beast it becomes six.
I don't like wizard infinity's weapon. Don't get me wrong its a great weapon just not for that form. I feel like it should have been a form of scepter type weapon that could do long range spells and turn into a lance or spear type. Something more divine and spectacular, just like the form itself, not brutish like an axe.
Is wizard no. But a few things 1. Wizard is one of the few seasons that I've seen all the way through 2. I love beast, how weird he is and how doesn't care. 3. Infinity's jingle has poisoned me. I see an Infiniti ( American nissan brand) I find myself saying like wizard does.
The only good things to come out of Super Hero Taisen Z are Kyoryugen rider kick and Nitou warning the gang of "some guy who looks like he's wearing a chocolate wrapper," when pointing out Sherivan. The rest left me bored and the 2 TPKs at the end of the film was horrendously stupid and killed the vibe after my epiphany of my own boredom.
For the rider episodes, I probably wouldve liked them more if I was just warned theycwere coming. Thinking there's 2 more episodes after the finale and just wanting to get them over with soured me toward them, though amadan pointing out that nearly all of riders' powers come from the same source as the big bad, cut from the same cloth, was really fascinating to realize. It really shows what makes a hero or villian isnt what they look like but what they do.
I remember watching wizard being hopeful that i might like it and i was half right and wrong, I love the big stuff on wizard like the suit, actions, transformation items the whole asthetic of it and haruto may not be everyones liked characters I'd personally say he's a decent character and so does the side characters but what made me dislike wizard is how bloated it felt as the 2 episodes could have been easily done with 1 episode instead which is probably why i dropped it after like the half way point of the show and while it's to be expected I personally gotta admit that infinity and hyper were the only moments that actually stood out for me as the rest just dont scream memorable and because of it's episodic nature the plot seemed dragged out rather than short yet still fun, but still everything else is still awesome and it may not be for me but I know that others will love it
Not sure if someone commented this yet, but the reason the fight choreography is spectacular is because legendary Power Rangers action director Koichi Sakamoto was the man behind the action for the series as well as direct the Fourze/Wizard crossover movie. He's now doing choreography for Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman.
I remember when I introduced Wizard to a friend of mine , he thought it was real cool. Same with Kyoryuger and Super Hero Taisen . I wanted to share my love of Toku with people I know
@@LegitMan335 Shout! Factory is already releasing Super Sentai into the U.S. We just had Kamen Rider Kuuga, Ryuki, Ichigo, Zero-One and Black being released into the U.S. as well. Mill Creek is releasing Ultraman and we just had two Metal Hero shows released on Blu-ray. So, I guess it's not all bad.

The Hyper Battle DVD is everything I love about Hyper Battle DVDs. It's dumb fun in the best way imaginable. A goofy, lighthearted romp with tons of banter, a brand new toy, and some awesome action to top it all off.
I like Wizard, but I totally understand those who don't like it. Most of the things feels like drag on FOREVER. But at least I didn't drop in like a certain Fruit Jesus show.
Wizard's design is one of the best main forms imo easy top 3, the red ruby armor plating with the cloke and black undersuit is sick. I still remember being in awe of how majestic it is in motion and pictures as a kid
There's a series called Harry Dresden that is basically a wizard in a city who solves crimes so that could have been an inspiration but I highly doubt it
Wizard is one of my favorite seasons with one of the strongest thematic cores which every episodic arc focused on. Not to mention the great action and style, I pretty much love everything about it.
The whole reason I love your series of videos about tokusatsu and kamen rider specifically is it gives me a general idea about the shows but doesn't make me feel any less excited for the series themselves. I've been waiting with baited breath to see what the 50th anniversary rider series brings to the table, as interesting as the previous anniversary series were. Decade was one of the first Riders I watched and it wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Please keep making these videos. It seems like the jingles can be very divisive but I understand why they seem quite hard to enjoy during the tense moments. If the music adds to a show, jingle or otherwise, it's not always perfect and that stands out during tense moments, good or bad.
I watched this show during what was the most trying college semester I had so far with a class that drove me to tears and a final project I had thought I had 10 more days to work on 2 days before it was actually due. This show lovingly beat me over the head with the message of not giving into despair even when it looks hopeless. It is alot of what kept me sane in that last leg and helped me see it to the end. For that, it will remain special to me.

I hate that its a common take that Wizard was too OP at first.
Comparing him to characters like Kabuto and Geats.
I dont think they noticed that the first many episodes of Wizard he is just fighting common mooks with way less power than him.

After watching various crossover movies before watching any actual shows (definitely a mistake in hindsight), I decided to watch Kamen Rider Wizard as my first Kamen Rider show. I finished it a few hours ago at the time of this comment. I thought it was good overall (I would give it an 8/10). The characters were likable, the Phantoms were enjoyable vile, the action and music were spectacular (Life Is Showtime lives rent-free in my head now), and I adored the aesthetics. My only problem was the two part format and Wiseman being a meh vilian. Does anyone have recommendations on which series to start next?
Build, Gaim, Ex aid, OOO, Drive, are great to go, if you want another thats similar feel to wizard, strongly say Fourze as i think it does power of friendship the best, Saber, Gotchard, and Ghost are also there

The one thing that I don’t like about wizard, is the plain donuts with mayonnaise thing. I know that started because of this season, and I just don’t understand why people have to put those two things together instead of having them separately. Nito is a confusing character simply because of the mayonnaise thing. That’s it.
I kind of hope that, when rider gets to it’s 55th anniversary, they bring back releases of legendary riders that Zio started with the legend Rider series of RKF.
I wouldn’t mind getting an alternate reality spin off of wizard, where Haruto it’s chocolate donuts, instead of plain sugar ones, and Nito is obsessed with mustard, or ranch dressing or something.

Most Kamen Rider jingles are dogshit. Wizard has my favorite henshin and design but that fucking jingle can't be ignored. Same thing with Zero-One. I'm okay with most of his jingle but the ending where some American guy says a line; that's just awful.

I appreciate Shunpei for being an assistant that acts as crowd control and escort for innocent people so that Haruto can focus on fighting the Phantoms. Yeah, Shunpei is clumsy and silly, but he does his best with what he has.
Regardless of how much bad outweighs the good, I still love Wizard. I wish it got more love for the plot and story plot more to make it solid good. But sadly I just don't know why or how but this was screwed up. It's really sad. But still, I enjoy Wizard. I love Hope vs Despair. I love Haruto/Wizard, I love the Phantoms, I love the magic rings and the epic moments. THE SONGS... but still, I wished Wizard was grander. Still, I had fun with Wizard. It didn't piss me off like Ryuki.

there's a few hints of their romance in episode 1 when haruto gets arrested by rinko he tried to flirt with her by giving a cute nickname then haruto tells her he will give her hope if she's ever falls to despair then rinko gets flattered hearing that in episode 2 when rinko goes to the antique shop she meets with koyomi and koyomi tells her about his origins after finding out his origins she admired haruto due to his selfless nature she becomes more determined to protect people from phantoms even without magic in episode 23 after phoenix beats up rinko haruto gets angry for what happened to her so angry that haruto kicks phoenix's ass to the sun after their final battle rinko tells haruto she needs to be more careful protecting people from phantom then she assured that haruto will always protect her that her final hope will always by his side

I know i am coming in late, but i am just discovering your content. Wizard was the first Kamen Rider i watched week to week through fansubs. And to this day i still love it. The fact that it is so mundane was it's biggest charm to me. It kept it grounded and relatable to me which is important in keeping with the theme trauma. I don't think this theme would have translated as well if it were bigger, louder or more bombastic. And Haruto being more subdued lends to that (not to ignore it seems haruto's name being so close to heart). Some ones last hope isn't usually depicted as a raging fire it is usually and ember to keep just enough heat until it can ignite a new flame. And i think that is what Wizard is or at least how i see it. It is a small more personal rider series to hopefully spark something in those who watch it and resonate it.
I really hope one day they would consider to bring Kamen Rider Wizard back to life once again for a sequel or a new movie in a much darker settings, new villains, new saga, new riders like Necromancer and Witch, and so many things that can be done. Or in an animated form like what they did to Kamen Rider W.
Seriously, Kamen Rider Wizard deserves more recognition and it has a special place in my heart for being my most favourite Kamen Rider ever. Not to mention, it has the most unique features among of all the Riders I’ve known. His infinity form is what caught my attention the most. Just pure badass. Kinda reminds me of the Kamen Rider version of Dante from DMC while his Infinity form reminds me of Vergil too.
My favourite scene is not the fight scenes one of my favourite episodes is the one where they meet the actress and they teach how hope and the truth are not always aligned. Another episode I love is the episode with Haruto's teacher and the plane, showing how blind someone can be to someone elses needs in moments of selfishness, and how you need people like Shuunpei, and Haruto's teacher in that episode to break you out of that.
Wizard is one of my favorite Kamen Rider series. I enjoy it from start to finish. It really is ridiculous how much hate it gets or how much people are bored with it. To me, there is no bad Kamen Rider series, though Hibiki is probably my least favorite. My favorite Kamen Rider is OOO most definitely.
Also, Marco, I feel like you were pretty even handed in this review. I liked Wizard a lot when I watched it the first time and I am a little concerned to go back and try it again. I do, however, think it's awful the way almost everyone in the western community holds this up as the worst season. Your opinion seemed very reasonable.

I'm glad that Wizard gets the right amount of respect for the insert theme (all of the Rider Chips songs were all straight up bangers and Rider Girls were on point) and Life is Showtime is one of my all time favorites

Fact: The reason Koyomi didn't get as much screentime and character development as she deserved, is because her actress; Makoto Okunaka was juggling her idol career with her role in Wizard.
Being an idol and being an actress are both equally demanding jobs, so the smart thing to do would've been to choose one or the other. Okunaka thought she could do both, and as a result; Wizard consisted mostly of filler. Okunaka's naive/idiotic decision reminds me a lot of when Nando from the "Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl" anime decided to be both a Pokémon Coordinator and participate in the Sinnoh League. And what ended up happening to Nando? He got his ass handed to him by Ash on a solid gold plate in the Sinnoh League's preliminary rounds.
God forbid I ever get a position of power at Toei, because I would issue an ultimatum to future actresses to prevent another decision like Okunaka's. Either the actress fully committed to the show, or I (or by extention, Toei) would find someone else that would.
And this is all coming from someone who also finds Wizard to be a rather basic season.
i would argue that much of the blame also falls on her agency for not realizing the conflict that would have happened sooner and should have either prevented her from taking up the role themselves or simply exclude her from idol schedules until she was done with filming. when it comes to idol-actors nowadays, it seems as if the companies simply don't care about whether or not an idol has other obligations they've taken up and continue to pile on work for them regardless of the consequences. considering idol companies tend to control every other aspect of their career, and Japanese entertainment agencies in general are quite strict when it comes to managing, i find it odd and somewhat careless that they'd allow that to happen. imo i would rather not have idol actors/actresses in general for anything more than occasional side characters due to this (although it worked in W), cause it seems like it automatically takes a lower priority in their scheduling. It's a shame that Kamen Rider in particular gets hit with these issues when we have sentai where we've had two consecutive seasons now with idol-actors who are fully committed to the part.

I like the magic and episodic theme. And I allways remember the 2 episodes about being Shunpei and Rinko suspects running away with a Gate. And the teacher of Haruto looking for the old memory of his passed child.
(And the special final xover, the idea than riders are almost or failed monsters is fine)

In my most honest opinion, I think Wizard Felt Hollow, in the sense that the "Hope" and "Despair" concepts felt kind of Superficial. For someone who is supouse to represent hope I didn't feel it from Haruto, I still like his character, but not as a representation of Hope... I don't really know how to explain it, I only know that's how I felt. In general Wizard felt too much like "Tell not Show" when it should have been more of a "Show don't Tell"
Wizard IDEAS were really interesting concepts but the execution was meh, it definitly could have been better.
Like camon, Monsters born from Human Despair? With most cases being about breaking the victim Emotionally and Psycologically to be born? That's dark sh*t. And the MC as someone who has overcome Despair and fights to give that same hope he hold into, to people? It sounds So Good, but I don't think Wizard delivered...
From Wizard the character story I remember the most is the Extroverted lady that had like so many friends from a lot of her different hobbies and how the Phantom actually made people, even her husband hate her for being annoying and having Haruto give her Hope staying by her side telling her something that helped. _Or something like that,_ I don't remember much (its been a while already since I watched Wizard). But I have a feeling and the fainted memory, that there, there was a moment I actually felt Haruto was a beacon of Hope for anyone, as we are told. Even if at the end she almost loses it (if I'm not mistaken).
But yeah, the Opening is a fantastic song and the Suit and Visuals were really cool, my problem with Wizard comes mostly from the execution of its Theme 👌
Side Note edit: Trying to remember more of the show and give it more thought after writing, maybe what was missing for me, is seeing Haruto be more Emotionally envolve with the other Gates, he is suppose to be Hope because he is someone who went through the worst Despair and overcome it, so I think we were missing Haruto showing his Sympathy, showing us he genuinely understands all the victims very well and that's why he is determined to help them... I think I never felt the weight of his words when he says "I will be your Hope"
I can agree that Wizard has some great fights and some style but I didn't like it because the story never grabbed and took me for a ride. With Fourze as basic as it is I went on a journey of friendship with friends, or Kiva taking me through a story of people's music, but Wizard never had a story in mind to tell which couldn't make me care about what was going on. I honestly believe that a good (not fantastic, just decent) story can elevate the rest of the show if done right but Wizard's lack of story really relagates it to its negative status.
Some people don't like this series but there was something about it that I found charming and it became one of my favorite Rider shows. But I understand it's not for everyone.

My favorite moment is one you left behind grimlins backstory- the way it swerves you making you think he might have originally been a good guy and then goes in so far the other extreme it made me scream outloud I couldnt handle how good it works; I had the advantage of watching these at my own pace and Im a binge watcher me and my Boyfriend watch them together cause he likes my reactions; tbh wizard is one of my top 10 like you said it never gets to peirce the better shows so I agree that it kinda skips along for along while, but I like the suits, themes, villain's and harutos ethos enough to keep me invested.

I think Kamen Rider Wizard is probably one of my favorite rider costumes......EXCEPT for the rings. I have never been big on rings personally and the ones used in the show are of course, supposed to be children's toys. Otherwise the mask and suit designs, especially with the magic theme are REALLY good.
Wizard is honestly one of my favorites. I watched it early on in my toku experience and then I rewatched it later. What I love so much is the visual style the show has. All the suits look real cool. The music is also probably my favorite in all of KR. Not just the insert themes, but the incidental music has actually stuck with me more than any other series. I don't really absorb character depth or story beats as well with subtitled shows as I would English speaking ones, so with KR it's mostly about how a series makes me feel than what I actually remember of the plot or interactions. This show just makes me smile when I see it and hear the themes.
The Kamen Rider English community hates Shunpei because they see themselves in him.
Wizard is up there with my five favorite Rider seasons I’ve seen so far. I love the magic, the characters minus Shunpei, the hyper active fighting that fuels me, Life is Showtime being my favorite intro and the suits are awesome. Wiseman being the absolute best.

Honestly. I think Kamen Wizard should’ve tied Both Wisemen and Sorcerer’s story together.
I know Wizard in Magic Land is it’s own thing. But think about it! Where did Fuuki (Wisemen) get the knowledge to turn himself into a Phantom!? Specifically the Carbuncle Phantom! Wouldn’t make so much more sense for Sorcerer to come into the picture, and forge a contract between them where they help each other with trying to achieve their own personal goals?
I mean, it would make a lot more sense, add abit more punch to the Wizard Narrative. And honestly I’d be interested in seeing Their dynamic, and It would be interesting to see Wisemen betraying Sorcerer rather than handing his daughter over! I mean, that would be awesome to see!
I understand your gripes with Wizard, and I can see why. For me tho, I truly do love Wizard. Not only for having a magic KR user fully, but a lot of the themes and messages i see from it. Of course, like you, my views are different. I was able to see hope in everything, understand why they chose to do it like this and everything else. I still love Wizard but respect your opinion.
I think the reason a lot of people like Wizard is because of the characters, the premise, and the execution of said premise. That's why asking for a favorite single moment gets a lot of the same answer. It is like asking for a single, specific, drop of water from the ocean. Single moments aren't what make Wizard fans enjoy the show, it's the entirety of Wizard. I think this is true for almost all Kamen Rider seasons too. Sure, there will always be key moments that people enjoy. But the people who love that series don't love it because of one moment; they love it because of the whole that those one moments creates.

I GUSH over the transformation of White Wizard/Kamen Rider Wiseman. It is simple perfection of every aspect (coming from someone with amatuer levels of art knowledge). To begin, the henshin jingle: it's made great alot by it being next to Wizard and Beast's loud and flashy henshin jingles that really show off the outrageous wonder of what they are, then Fueki appears and just the switch to henshin mode on the belt is immediately more muted and serious, after that the grim and commanding "Change! Now!" followed by an equally grim and serious jingle with no words. Next, his design, it's POWEFUL to look at. The elegant cowl to the roughcut gem and more sinister eyes, it all compounds to impose a powerful silhouette. This leads me to the transformation, the magic ring glides over him to transform like Wizard and Beast, but unlike them, it first reveals the form as a blacked out silhouette backlit by the spell circle, first revealing the sinister eyes and finally the full form. It's so simple, but it is among some of the best suits in all of Kamen Rider to me.
wizard is the one season ill never fully understand why its so universally beloved, literally all it has going for it is its quantities and technicalities (suit, themes, OST, choreo) everything else is just little to nothing, the 1st to maybe 2nd arc were actually ok when it was kaijin/monster of the week, since its very feel good, almost slice of life and actually carries a message in each mini subplot, they werent bad at all, the issue is when it becomes a full-on story, its seriously lackluster, regardless if its themes still make sense or not, its just a lot of "that happens" with a whole cast of "they exist", outside of Haruto and maybe Mayu, i dont see why everyone absolutely loves this cast let alone show to death

Nitou's catchphrase being a mimcry of Haruto's bring me endless joy when I hear him say it, especially with it being something so silly.
Wizard isn't one of my favorite Kamen Riders (which my top is Build followed closely by W and OOO) but it's definitely still good. The problem for most people I feel is that the show basically has two halves; the first half where they deal with monster of the week and the second half, where it's basically one long movie (or a netflix series). And unlike most examples, you could almost start someone in the second half and completely disregard the first (which isn't helped by some character intros being very basic, so you don't even need that context either).
The thing is I like both halves for different reasons. The First half has a lot of tight character dramas that have a running theme of "accepting tragedy and moving on", which is where Haruto's Hopebringer comes. This is most evident in the episode with the con-artist, but also the one with the baker. Then there's the secondary theme of "finding what truly matters to you" because a lot of the Phantoms don't know what the Gates's true despair is, and sometimes even the Gates don't know either (see the episode with the film girl). The main problem here is that because these are character dramas focused on one-off characters, Haruto and Co often feel like they're just observers or contrived to be there for the sake of the show. W did this better through the focus of being a detective story, where Shotaro's investigation is interwoven into the narrative. Here, while there is investigation, most of the time it's just Haruto running about trying to keep the Phantom from being a dick to the Gate. Which is also probably where the complaint that he is a flat character comes from as for a good half (to almost a third) of the series isn't really focused on him or his journey and his involvement in all of the episodes were more or less just to punch the bad guy. Notably the good episodes from this lot often has him or someone else from the main cast teach the gate about moving on or discover something new about themselves.
The second half is where the series really takes off, but the problem then comes that you had to have sit through some 30+ episodes of random shenanigans with tangential relation to this first, and that is a very hard sell for people. Even more so if you had to watch this show weekly.
Maybe you can upload the abridged content on a separate channel or something on that scale cuz it’s a real shame you went all effort for it but can’t show it
I think there is a minor five in this with Wizard's five element: Fire, water, Earth, Wind, and void (Diamond wizard). Then there are five mages the four created by a certain evil mage and the evil mage himself. And last, the five main good guy cast but it has been years since I've seen Wizard so I could be wrong. Wait, I screwed up. With Beast it becomes six.
I don't like wizard infinity's weapon. Don't get me wrong its a great weapon just not for that form. I feel like it should have been a form of scepter type weapon that could do long range spells and turn into a lance or spear type. Something more divine and spectacular, just like the form itself, not brutish like an axe.
Is wizard no. But a few things
1. Wizard is one of the few seasons that I've seen all the way through
2. I love beast, how weird he is and how doesn't care.
3. Infinity's jingle has poisoned me. I see an Infiniti ( American nissan brand) I find myself saying like wizard does.
The only good things to come out of Super Hero Taisen Z are Kyoryugen rider kick and Nitou warning the gang of "some guy who looks like he's wearing a chocolate wrapper," when pointing out Sherivan. The rest left me bored and the 2 TPKs at the end of the film was horrendously stupid and killed the vibe after my epiphany of my own boredom.
For the rider episodes, I probably wouldve liked them more if I was just warned theycwere coming. Thinking there's 2 more episodes after the finale and just wanting to get them over with soured me toward them, though amadan pointing out that nearly all of riders' powers come from the same source as the big bad, cut from the same cloth, was really fascinating to realize. It really shows what makes a hero or villian isnt what they look like but what they do.
I remember watching wizard being hopeful that i might like it and i was half right and wrong, I love the big stuff on wizard like the suit, actions, transformation items the whole asthetic of it and haruto may not be everyones liked characters I'd personally say he's a decent character and so does the side characters but what made me dislike wizard is how bloated it felt as the 2 episodes could have been easily done with 1 episode instead which is probably why i dropped it after like the half way point of the show and while it's to be expected I personally gotta admit that infinity and hyper were the only moments that actually stood out for me as the rest just dont scream memorable and because of it's episodic nature the plot seemed dragged out rather than short yet still fun, but still everything else is still awesome and it may not be for me but I know that others will love it
Not sure if someone commented this yet, but the reason the fight choreography is spectacular is because legendary Power Rangers action director Koichi Sakamoto was the man behind the action for the series as well as direct the Fourze/Wizard crossover movie. He's now doing choreography for Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman.

Mill Creek is releasing Ultraman and we just had two Metal Hero shows released on Blu-ray. So, I guess it's not all bad.

The Hyper Battle DVD is everything I love about Hyper Battle DVDs. It's dumb fun in the best way imaginable. A goofy, lighthearted romp with tons of banter, a brand new toy, and some awesome action to top it all off.
I agree. I like Wizard, but the two episode act structure was kind of boring. But Haruto is the best aspect.
I think this series depends on one's tastes and view of the show. Some people love, others not so much. But I can tell it's a well made show.
I like Wizard, but I totally understand those who don't like it. Most of the things feels like drag on FOREVER.
But at least I didn't drop in like a certain Fruit Jesus show.
Wizard's design is one of the best main forms imo easy top 3, the red ruby armor plating with the cloke and black undersuit is sick. I still remember being in awe of how majestic it is in motion and pictures as a kid
There's a series called Harry Dresden that is basically a wizard in a city who solves crimes so that could have been an inspiration but I highly doubt it

Wizard is one of my favorite seasons with one of the strongest thematic cores which every episodic arc focused on. Not to mention the great action and style, I pretty much love everything about it.
The whole reason I love your series of videos about tokusatsu and kamen rider specifically is it gives me a general idea about the shows but doesn't make me feel any less excited for the series themselves. I've been waiting with baited breath to see what the 50th anniversary rider series brings to the table, as interesting as the previous anniversary series were. Decade was one of the first Riders I watched and it wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Please keep making these videos. It seems like the jingles can be very divisive but I understand why they seem quite hard to enjoy during the tense moments. If the music adds to a show, jingle or otherwise, it's not always perfect and that stands out during tense moments, good or bad.
I watched this show during what was the most trying college semester I had so far with a class that drove me to tears and a final project I had thought I had 10 more days to work on 2 days before it was actually due. This show lovingly beat me over the head with the message of not giving into despair even when it looks hopeless. It is alot of what kept me sane in that last leg and helped me see it to the end. For that, it will remain special to me.
If i were to ask someone to marry me, the ring will be a Kamen Rider Wizard ring.
The Kyoryugers are probably the most humorous tokusatsu team, even if it’s not in their own show
My favorite moment in Kamen rider wizard was that when he use huricane dragon for first time and then he use his dragon wings and thunder ring to make that huricane with thunders to that flying phatom
