It's amazing how few educational videos exist on Mattresses inner workings! We spend decades of our lifetime on Mattresses and still it's the most unnoticed product ever! I bet 99 percent of consumers don't even bother to try and dig deep into the technology and components (especially on innerspring types and tech.), they will just flow with whatever brand or advertised features thrown at them. Thank you so much for this and many other so professional educational videos!

I couldn't agree more. People really need to learn about the componentry in the most important piece of furniture in their home, and one that directly impacts their health and restoration - their mattress.

+Rob Fultz I'm always learning and studying. Sleep ergonomic research on my desk as I type.

What can be done to prevent that middle sag from happening?

+Stephanie Roberts Sag in the middle of a mattress can be due to many things, Starting with the bed frame, you need to make sure that there is a proper center support. Then, make the sure the mattress set foundation is properly firm, flat and supportive. With the mattress make sure that a solid spring unit is used. Lastly, make sure that proper layers of higher-quality foams are used in the mattress and that they are affixed properly. This is where most sagging results in modern mattresses - the foams are generally lower density, low weight fibers are used, many convoluted foams are used, and they're often not secured well. While all foams soften over time, true sagging is usually a result of one or a combination of many of these things.

Thank you very much! Can you explain "center support and properly firm?" Thank you. After your comments here what foundation and mattress would you recommend? I am looking for support but not too rigid, quality foams, cotton bating if possible. What is a solid spring? What about thicker springs for firmness.

While we can't pick a mattress for you, these Beducation videos serve as a good guideline. The innerspring unit's main job is to provide support, so you want to make sure that whatever mattress you're considering has a good strong unit that will support you properly and maintain good alignment characteristics. Some spring units are stronger than others, so you'll want to discuss the differences with an educated consultant at the store you visit. The firmness of the spring unit isn't dictated strictly by the thickness of the steel. It also depends upon the manner in which the spring is joined, the design and the number of revolutions, just to name a few things. The overall comfort is dictated mostly by the padding layers on top. If you're looking at an item using a decent amount of cotton, make sure that the cotton is properly pre-compressed so that it holds shape. There aren't too many manufacturers making a quality cotton mattress, so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to do some online research and find a few and speak with a qualified representative of those companies and go try one out in person. Good luck!
