What makes Elijah so notable is that he WAS the most honorable and noble of the Mikkelsen's. He was a man that always kept his word, never raised a hand in violence unless it was called for, and always sought to protect his family above all else. Being changed into a vampire changed him. Vampires in this series have a threefold problem. Number one, being made a vampire gives someone the predatory instincts similar to that of a housecat. On a deep visceral level they love the hunt, the chase, the fight and the kill. It gives them a very real physical high. Their second problem is that EVERY emotion they have is dialed up to 11. Even the most minor annoyance can be come burning rage, the slightest attraction blind infatuation. And their grief is literally beyond human comprehension. It takes them years to learn how to cope with this and return to something similar to a normal human personality. Their third problem is that when a younger vampire, less than 400 years, becomes overwhelmed by their enhanced emotion they can flip a metal switch as a defense mechanism and just turn off all their human emotions. This does NOT affect their predatory instincts or the physical high they get from indulging them. When Elijah was first made into a vampire by his witch mother he lost control of his new instincts and killed a woman he was deeply in love with. To protect him from the overwhelming grief caused by this, and prevent him from turning off his emotions, his mother created a spell in his mind in the form of the red door. Elijah was able to instinctively place the memory of his monstrous actions behind this door and forget them until his mother could help him deal with them better when the spell came down. The problem was that Klaus killed their mother almost immediately after this so the temporary spell was left up for a thousand years and it affected Elijah's self control. He would commit monstrous acts during his younger years when he was still learning how to be a vampire, then forget all about them so he would believe he never made any mistakes. Later when the spell did come down all those past actions hit him at once and it left Elijah mentally scarred and drastically shifted his own self image.
One of my favorites edits its the circle of violence / the original, because it show how difficult it is to break this circle that started with his dad and it ended with his daugther 😢

My interpretation from the few times the story line brought up the abuse Niklaus suffered at the hands of Mikael Mikaelson. Niklaus by the way was not Mikael’s biological son. The beatings were brutal and Esther not only allowed the abuse but facilitated the abuse by binding Niklaus wolf side to prevent her indiscretion from being discovered. This binding of the wolf side prevented Niklaus from defending himself during the beatings he was receiving from Mikael.
The vampires have magical rings that allow them to walk in sunlight, not all do. But originals burn in the sun and don’t die as Elijah said the originals are “special vampires”
The show is worth it. It follows the timeline like this - The Vampire diaries Season 1, 2,3,4 then the originals start and both shows go side by side. The vampire diaries finishes first than the originals, after orginals the story is continued in a show called Legacies. Legacies - not so good😅😅
