I agree with those of you that lament the days when musicians took more of a public stand for political interests. I've always credited Lady Miss Kier and Deee-Lite for shaping many of my political views when I became a massive fan at eleven years old. However, when it comes to political views in the recording industry, today's record label executives are more likely to use Deee-Lite as a cautionary tale.
Though their talents were undeniable and most people familiar with them from the early 1990's always lament that they never went on to greater success, their downfall is often blamed on their second album and its heavy political material. (Song titles included: "I Had a Dream I Was Falling Through a Hole in the Ozone Layer," "Vote Baby Vote," "Rubber Lover," etc). The music was just as great as their debut album that included "Groove is in the Heart" and _Infinity Within_ was widely anticipated to be the album of the Summer back in 1992, but as Lady Miss Kier tells it, the execs flat-out told them that their music was "too gay" and "too black" before pulling their funding for music videos, tours, etc).
To me, there's no question that they understood the likelihood that should they not re-capture the magic of "Groove is in the Heart"- which, let's face it, was an impossiblity no matter what they did - unless they made lighting strike a second time, the spotlight they had on them wouldn't stick around very long. Knowing that, they took full advantage of the soap box Elektra and MTV had given them to stand on and they used it to draw attention to the political issues they were passionate about. As Kier said, "[We] don't think it's a crime to dance and think at the same time."
The members of Deee-Lite never really chased mainstream stardom. They were midnight children at home on a dancefloor and if their music was played in nightclubs to bring joy and unity on any dancefloor, they succeeded. There are many more reasons than simply their political views as to why their mainstream success was brief, forever doomed to the one-hit-wonder label regardless of the fact that they had six number-one's on the Billboard dance charts. Sadly, the three original members scattered after the band split, with Kierin Kirby spending a decade in London prior to returning to the states, Dmitry Brill settling into fatherhood in Germany, and Towa Tei returning to Japan, where he has become the group's most successful member post-Deee-Lite. All three have had careers traveling the world, spinning records in the most exclusive nightclubs from Los Angeles to Ibiza, yet their paths have rarely crossed. The RUclips "reaction video" trend has people talking about them more than just about any other time since they split in the mid-1990's and this is earning them a new generation of fans. They're also finally receiving the credit long overdue for being pioneers of the dance/electronic music culture thriving as "EDM" - a term Lady Miss Kier deee-spises (see what I did there?) Tragically, all three insist there is no chance of reuniting, though they've been made considerable offers and fans have begged for it. There's even a completed-yet-unreleased Deee-Lite album (not to mention a solo effort) that Lady Miss Kier has teased for almost thirty years, but with every one of those years there's less possibility of it ever being released. They have their reasons, but in the end they were three twentysomethings whose paths crossed in the "Global Village" of NYC at the right time. They made something beautiful and we're all very fortunate to have enjoyed their work together. They were a great band while it lasted.
....As Lady Miss Kier says, "I couldn't ask for another."
