She did this in a bid to change the narrative about Khayelitsha in Cape Town, South Africa. I sat down with her to share her story and why she decided to take on this massive task. Really proud of Annette. The South African township landscape is a goldmine of economic opportunities for indigenous locals. The township was Apartheid's design and biggest weapon against black social and economic progress, and we used it as a counter-weapon against them by building social cohesion which gave rise to the freedom struggle across the whole country. It's about time we started using it for our economic advancement as well. Sis Annette is carrying the torch for our generation. The solution to the overwhelming crime in the Townships is bringing economic opportunities home.
    Thanks Tayo for this feature.

    Townships are not slums. Many townships are same as any other suburbs. The difference between township and suburbs is that townshourips were designed for Blacks, and Coloured people, and suburbs were for whites and Indians only. In government terminology, when a new suburb is buid, including gated communities, they refer it as township is established. The planning is the same. In townships,, especially in Gauteng, there are millionairs staying there. Information settlement is when people build shacks next to a townships mostly for work opportunities. Slums are delapidated areas, mostly informational areas. Thank for your informative video.

    Townships in South Africa are not slums. One famous youtuber once said Soweto is the biggest slum in Africa, this after visiting Vilakazi Street, Diepkloof, Pimville and Maponya Mall. We know what some slums look like in other countries and they know too but that doesn't stop them calling our townships slums. I wish the drone images were zoomed more so people could see the real picture.

    This is beautiful and I'm inspired 😍. There is a new trend I've been seeing around South African townships and some villages. People are now building beautiful Guesthouses and hotels in Townships and I'm so excited to see our people bringing beauty and glamour to our neighbourhoods ❤ In 2019 my husband and I attended a wedding at a village in Venda, Limpopo. We got to stay at a new and first guesthouse in that village. The beauty, good service, and vision that the owner had were so amazing. As Africans, we are capable of great things and we are the main target market. So why not bring these things home to our people 🙌

We need more black entrepreneurs in the townships and villages who are passionate about not only the economic development of the townships/villages, but the social development as well. The government has various funding options available for SMEs, but, unfortunately, due to corruption, nepotism and unnecessary bureaucratic processes, these funding options never reach the people who need it and deserve it the most.

    Advancement thrives on innovation. She saw an opportunity TO DO something and she took an advantage of it to develop her “hometown.” What a brilliant idea! Also, to see that they built all of that without any help from foreign investors, simply admirable given the quality of things there.

    thanks Tayo for the beautiful content.
    I wish to lend my voice on the ongoing conversations around using terms like "township" instead of "slums".
    Although both terms refer to similar if not thesame living conditions.
    However there is a very negative connotation with using "slums"....the word today almost strips the diginity of those staying in such areas.
    for instance - broke vs poor - both refers to thesame situation....but one is more dignifying than the other.
    so, personally this conversation about using the right dignified terms should be centered on humanising padegogy.....knowledge should be empowering.

    • @lebo5281
      @lebo5281 2 года назад +2

      I cannot like your comment enough.
      Human dignity is at the core of this whole "debate", Africans have a very long history of indignity, so we are very sensitive to words that even contain a hint of an attempt to strip our dignity away from us.
      We really cannot perpetuate our own suffering with sensationalism.

    I have been to Kayelitsha it's definitely not a slum...I have been to two of their clubs: Kwa-Ace & Rands...great vibes all the way...Kayelitsha is basically "e-kasi" which means the "hood". There is definitely a high crime rate just like neighbouring Gugulethu...but trust me this place isn't a slum more like a lower to lower-middle income township. I have been in actual slums in SouthAfrica, Mozambique & Swaziland....this place is developing in its own unique way and doesn't qualify as a slum.

    WOW that's brilliant, and great to see locals with strong economic vision / endeavour, bring such business ventures to fruition. Even through the storm, of finding it most difficult to raise capital, derived from historical financial institution's "bias" - [intentional discriminatory / oppressive] practices, yet you never wavered / allowed thoss nay sayers to steal your dream. Annette well done for staying on course with all your projects, and best wishes for those soon to come on stream, as I'm sure it couldn't have been an easy journey at all. Your story is such an inspiration, and I'm always especially even more empowered, when I can see Black & people of colour from across the globe, following their creativity calling to change the negative narrative, by just going for it; particularly those who proactively aspire to transform / change their local economies' trajectory, ultimately creating employment and progression opportunities for their home town. Keep up the excellent work you're doing, and your businesses will continue to soar while contributing towards SA's development. 👍👏
