John has always shown great poise and grace under pressure. Notice that he simply walks out and sits down and starts playing. No time to adjust yourself on the chair, no time to fiddle with some settings, no time to take a deep breath and get "ready"...no, just walk out sit down and start playing! True Pro stuff folks. Oh and of course John kills it!!!!!
How would you like to be the guitar player that every musician places in such a high pedestal? My favorite is Mahavishnu Orchestra Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 1986. Listen to it with earphones or headphones!
He was hanging on by the skin of his teeth! In an interview, he said that Doc Severinson kicked it off much faster than at the rehearsal. Musicians can be such bastards!
An insane tempo that the maestro flies with on a nylon string acoustic rather than a low action electric. Amazing!
After watching this McLaughlin performance, my 82 year old Mother's only comment was . . . "Asshole!".
And his note selection when he's soloing - WOW! He sounds like Coltrane - 'freaking dazzling!
John always has a picture of Coltrane in his music room.

Incredible, but I wish he’d used an Ovation steel string. The nylon sound doesn’t quite work in this context.
Obviously just came off a Passion Grace and Fire tour...
