I still remember listening to this the very first time . We was in the country and a storm was coming it was beautiful together. I was 16 years old then . 30 years ago .
I was 17 years old when I listened to this the very first time. "The downward spiral" has been the first NIN album I've ever heard. It happened in 1998. 25 years ago.
I was 21 when this came out. Living on a carrier in the US Navy. I had been deployed for the better half of two years and aching to be home with friends.

I was a old man when I first heard this in the late Cretaceous, now I’m a child and it’s the end of the universe
One of my favorite NIN songs.
I was tripping on shrooms when i first heard this song. I was peacking on this track & fell asleep traveling thru different realities, each wave a different earths on a plain like this or Ireland's green fields or Japan mountains all in a wave, everything everywhere all at once. I was 14. The downward spiral woke me up & saved me from suicide.
It was my warning. Its a masterpiece.

I was 14 when I first heard this in 1994. It still resonates with me today, in 2024. Back then, I didn’t know what made it so special. Now, after living, loving, losing, and death I understand.
We all yearn for that warm place, wherever it is, but know it’s never going to be.
