  • Here's a little insight on an Air Force dorm in Grand Forks, N.D. This dorm does not resemble every other dorm in the Air Force, in fact most are super different. If you're interested in the Air Force or saw your orders say Grand Forks, hopefully this helps!
    I encourage you to check out my friends and the tours of their dorms, below:

    It wouldn't be a military thread without an "old timer" back in the day post. I was in the Air Force 1973-77 and we had left over WWII dorms/barracks. The A/C didn't always work. We didn't have rooms and got privacy only by pushing our lockers as dividers. The bathrooms were open showers. We had ten toilets and ten urinals lined in rows with no dividers. YES. You sat on the thrown with no divider (!). I was eventually at one base where we had rooms and a single roommate but the bathroom was still down the hall. Dividers but no stall doors.
    God bless and thank-you to those who currently serve. This oldtimer is proud of all of you.

      That's the Air Force I remember. We eventually moved to a dorm with two man rooms, metal frame beds and metal lockers just like you said. Showers at the end of the hall and a day room in a completely separate building. And oh yeah, one community wall phone at the end of the hallway.

      And back in 79 to 81 at MacDill the sewer backed up to fill the hallway, and on a good rainy day the Dorm first floor would flood out. Same old WWII barracks conversion. And the third floor of our SPS dorm was TLQ and had Red Horse Squadron trashed our Day room, and break our TV. The Air craft mechanics had it much better. big screen TV, with Cable. Their AC broke4 down it was never down more then 72 hours. When our AC went down it took weeks. But at least we were only 2 to a room.

      I am retired Air Force; probably retired before you were born, the Air Force has always treated their troops better than the other services. That being said, I just watched one video showing one dorm room from each branch. All were made by troops, not the military. The Army had the best dorm room by far (all were for E4s BTW) The AF was the worst, but she did say it was an old quarters. I would have killed to have a dorm room like that when i was single.

    I was in the Air Force in the mid 80's, and we knew we had it better than the other branches. However, this is even way better than we had it. We had two people per room, with a bathroom shared between two rooms. If you were E-4 or above, you got your own room. The walls were cinderblock. We did not have it bad, but this is luxury in comparison.

    I ghosted a dorm room many years ago while stationed at Minot when I was a SrA. Being single at the time, I didn't get BAH to live off base, but got together with a couple other guys and rented a 3BR apartment. Back then, rent was only like $600/mo, so it we only paid $200 each. For us, it was worth it to pay the $200 out of pocket to have a place of our own.

There's still plenty of information that I've learned about the Army and Air Force after I've joined that when I go back to see if it's been mentioned online, I can't find it at all. And there's still stuff you wouldn't even think about asking if you could find any info online. So saying "should’ve done more research" doesn't really work.

      Imagine the astonishment that so many army soldiers have when they learn that not only does the air force have "dorms" instead of "barracks" but they can actually leave those dorms far, far sooner than soldiers can leave barracks. Supposedly, air force members can leave when they reach E4. Army can't leave barracks until they're E6, which is going to take three times as long (in some cases E5 if the barracks are over crowded). Crazy.

    Thanks for the video. I was originally going to be assigned to Grand Forks in 1990 but was diverted to OTJAG in the Pentagon and living at Fort Myers. It was really funny as the Air Force floors of an Army Barracks was one to two people to a room while the Army on the first and second floor had four, 4!!!!, solders to a room. The Airman also had cable in our rooms but could use an outdated TV in the day room which almost no one used. So, thank you again for the tour.

    Grand Forks dude here! Good on you for showing Kollinger (or Eielson). They’re a much more accurate depiction of the dorms as a whole. Unlike Barnes, being the Taj Mahal of eternal happiness, and Bunch (currently) being the moldy blast back to the 1950s. Thankfully though, Bunch will be renovated immediately following Gray Hall’s renovation wrap up.
    But anyways, killer job showing the base in a positive light! Sometimes it gets a bit rough to see the pros over the cons up here.

    Was assigned to GFAFB "84 to 89" the dorm I lived in was a cinder block room with no amenities like a microwave, refrigerator, sink, bathroom. You had to shower in a community bathroom and had no cooking facilities aside from a microwave in the dayroom. And as far as the additional 800 dollars a month for food. As a SSgt I only made 1000 a month. I would give my right nut to live in these dorm conditions today. You kids are so lucky to have these great living facilities today. But God bless you for keeping me safe.

    Nice upgrade from what I had at Grand Forks AFB when I was there in the late 1970’s. My “barracks”, as we called them back then, were 2 guys to a room, with a small bathroom separating 2 more guys that had their room.
    No group kitchen or bike storage back then.
    Our day rooms were similar.
    My barracks (322) was brand new in 1976, but has since been bulldozed from what I can see on Google maps. It was located west of the Red River Inn (Chow hall) which is now the location of a road and pond.
    Interesting video.

    55 years ago I left home for basic training in the Air Force (1968). I was stationed overseas my entire time. In Italy, the base was built in 1963. In Japan, the base was a former Japanese military base taken over by the US after WWII. In both cases the dorms were out of a different century compared to this. It was always 2 to a room. Initially in Italy, it was 3 to a room. There was zero privacy. Microwaves didn't exist, TV's were unheard of except for a black & white one in the 'day room' where you could only watch AFRTS reruns. Otherwise there was a latrine for you and 20 others to use along with group showers like in a high school gym class. You could live off base if you could afford it, either a "shack job" or a room mate. Living was cheap overseas 55 years ago. House rentals off base were around $150/month. Used cars were cheap. I bought a used Toyota Crown sedan in Japan for $175. People did have a lot of stereo equipment and tailor made clothes from off base tailors. Overseas, the 'black market' was quite active and a lot of stuff was bought via cartons of Marlboro's ($2/carton at the BX) or bottles of Johnny Walker Scotch. Tech school at Keesler AFB in Biloxi in 1968 was cockroach infested pre-WWII open bay wooden barracks, open latrines with a row of commodes (no privacy) and a tin trough to pee in along with one communal shower. They were finally torn down in the 1980's. It was primitive even by 1960's standards.

    Goddamn does this bring back memories. I got out of A.F. in Mar 06 and I vividly remember dorm life. Our lives consisted of two things...video games and alcohol on the weekends. But those early day dorm parties in tech school were some of the best though.

    Being an Air Force veteran from 1964 - 1968, we had nothing like this. Three men to a dorm room maybe 12' X 12" and six men sharing one bathroom. It kind of saddens me that everything now seems to be so "dummied down". Not much (none) air conditioning in those years either. Wake up in Greenville, MS in July in a barracks and you could drink the air it was so thick. The only pets that you could have were the mosquitoes. Yep, at 72 I think I could get through this. But you know, I wouldn't trade those four years back in the sixties for anything. At ease Airmen!

    • @boomerang1125
      @boomerang1125 Год назад

      Keeler 1968 for me. Open barracks, open latrine, trough to pee in and one open shower for all. No privacy whatsoever. No air conditioning and damn little heat during the winter. The pre WWII wooden barracks had daylight between the walls and the floor and cockroaches everywhere. The 'latrine queen' got up 10 minutes before revile to hose down the latrine to flush all the cockroaches down the drain in the floor. Thus, everything was 'wet' when you would shit, shower and shave 10 minutes later naked in front of God and country.

    I guess everything is relative. I was stationed their from 1968 to 1972 and my first year was spent in barracks (not dorms). You had two men to a room, communal showers, bathrooms and you were not allowed to cook in the barracks. I was in 321 MIMS and we took care of the Minuteman missile system. We were in S.A.C., had Top Secret clearances... we thought we were hot shit. You can thank me a few others for the upgraded roadway between the base and Emerado. My team was at Johnny's Bar in Emerado on our day off, when we were called in for a security briefing. Three of us were in one car (67 Chevelle) and while crossing the highway we were broadsided by a pick-up truck at 65 MPH. I was thrown out of the car ( I was a passenger) and broke my neck (C1). Later as I lay in a Grand Forks hospital (not a base hospital) they came in and took a picture of me in the hospital bed, then posted it all over the base... with the caption don't drink and drive (I was a passenger). But that crash and a few that followed proved how dangerous that intersection was and allowed them to push to have it changed. For any of you that are stationed out there, look to the skies. Around 1971 we were out doing a warhead change when a another team about working an adjacent site called in to base reporting that a UFO was hovering over the silo. We got out of our M-van ( we were grabbing our brown bag lunch) and looked in the direction of the other team. We could see a bright white light motionless in the sky over what I'm assuming was the other silo (approximately 15 miles away, made possible by a clear sky and flat terrain) The base sent (scrambled?) a couple of jets and we watched as they headed toward the object. When they were at least a mile (guessing at the distance) away from the object it sped off at incredible speed. We never heard anything and only observed a white light, but I can promise you it wasn't anything we had in our arsenal. Just curious, do you still have to plug your cars (tank heaters and trickle chargers) in to have them start in the winter?

I was at GFAFB from 1977-1982 (that's why I watched this video), though I was married so we lived on the economy at first and then got base housing (the six-plexes -- ours across from the hospital is now gone and appears to be in Officer Country). I did though visit the barracks once. Old cinder-block construction. Each room had a bunk bed for two airmen, a refrigerator, desk, dresser, etc. Community day-room with a TV. Community bathrooms with showers, one for the men and a second for the women. I never saw the laundry room. What you just showed as "outdated" looked quite new to me.
    In '82 I went to a school at Keesler and stayed in Muse Manor which had two rooms sharing a common bathroom much as you showed only the toilet was in a stall. Two airmen per room with conventional beds, a mini-fridge, a TV, and a microwave (I think). In the Navy Reserve, the BEQ in San Diego used that same layout though no TV; we had to go to a community day-room to watch TV. Of course, when I made CPO I stayed in the chiefs' quarters (later in the BOQ) with a separate room with bathroom, mini-fridge, microwave, TV, and a reclining chair (though not in the BOQ).
    As for ghosting, I would always have to share my BEQ room with an active duty sailor, but in about a decade of weekends in the BEQ I only saw my roommate once. All the other times he'd be gone for the weekend.

    • @EloraJean

      You'll PT with your office or squadron no matter where you live. You can also work out solo, my office for example works out together every Monday afternoon but I'm also given time on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work out alone. You can switch over. However I wouldn’t wait until August to start the process. You probably want to find a recruiter now, and get a checklist of everything you need to join. The Air Force will try and fill prior-service jobs in October. So if you’re not already squared away by then, you’ll miss the bus and probably have to wait 6-12 months before another opportunity opens up. Good luck bro.

    I shared a room in a barracks, not dorm, with two other guys. We had a central latrine and a day room with the only TV in the barracks. We pulled CQ, two inspections a week, GI parties periodically as well. The appliances we enjoyed were an electric alarm clock and coffee pot. That's all and if you want a better look at the barracks, look up Glasgow AFB, MT on youtube. Off duty, we had a auto and wood shop, a library, bowling alley which you never could bowl at, and a cafeteria. That's it and I laughed when she said this dorm was outdated. No airman's club and limited access to the NCO club, airman's night. My wife jokes when she said that's why we got married. Seriously though, outside of the radar site at Opheim, MT, this was the worst base in the AF. Limited MWR funding since someone discovered if the gate was moved up to the county highway, we were only remote, not isolated. Only two female airmen on base, both married so no dating possibilities. On a positive side, the hunting and fishing were great. The weather was hot in the summer and the winters were brutal with the high for the day around 0-10 above. Boring as all get out so I went to school and read a lot, the only two further positives I can think of for this place. Thank God it is closed.

    The dude that's ghosted and living with family......it used to be a single airman could draw BAQ if they "resided" with family in the immediate vicinity of the base. Has that changed?

  • @davidwise1302
    @davidwise1302 3 года назад

    Question. The base is about 15 miles out of town and there is no public transportation between the base and the town -- except leading up to Xmas so that the airmen could go shopping. You have to either buy a car or find a friend with a car, or else you are stuck on base (Emerado didn't look like it had much night life). Being a full-time barracks rat could be stressful, especially in the winter (which usually lasted from end of October to mid-late May). To make matters worse, many shops didn't have windows so in the winter at that latitude it would be dark when you'd report for duty and still dark when you knocked off, so unless you went out for chow you could go for days without ever seeing the sun. While I was there, one new airman ended up flipping out.
    Has the public transportation situation changed by now?

  • @aet523

    I have a serious question. How old was the oldest airman in your flight? I’m 26....a few lbs over weight but I’m giving myself until next year my 27th birthday to be fit and ready to take the ASVAB. I know 27 is on the older side of most people who enlist. I was just wondering what to expect going in at an older age. Will more be expected of me? Will they expect me to automatically take leadership roles and responsibilities and reflect badly if I don’t? Will I be isolated from all the other girls bc of the difference in our ages? Will they give me flack for being and “old lady”....even though 27 isn’t really old. The only upside is I plan to have an associates degree by the time I join so hopefully It will make me feel better being older...at lest I’d be an E3, right? Just wondering if there was any info you could share on the topic.

    • @jesseroque3236
      @jesseroque3236 5 лет назад +2

      AriQuinn92 so really during basic they’re not looking at your age or what you have accomplished. They’ll look at your leadership qualities and they’ll put you where they see fit. Being older w/ an associates can help but if you’re afraid of confrontation and holding others accountable they will not choose you for a leadership position. Hope this helps!

      Most people I know who are in got to move out when they hit SrA but some people I know who had longer tech schools got to leave around the 2.5 mark because of over filling (like Elora said)
      I knew someone who never lived in a dorm because he was married way before he enlisted but got a divorce during his first TDY after tech school (only had like a month to go for his TDY). They made him move into a dorm to finish TDY because he wasn’t married anymore but the AF had to pay to store all of his stuff during the time he was in a dorm and transport it when he PCS’d so to save on storage costs, they told him he could move out of the dorms after 3 months because of the weird situation.

      Not out of pocket, no. Your housing allowance and sustenance allowance are both automatically deducted from you if you live in the dorms, but since you never see the money in the first place it feels like it's free. Once you move out the allowances that were deducted previously are then given to you for you to spend at your discretion on rent, bills and groceries.
