The commentator says that Waldner looked visibly nervous when he was ahead. He even took an unusual time out. It may the that the fear of winning caught up with him.

Waldner is one of greatest players but hard to say the best. I found this interview with J.O. Waldner. The results below is from his interview. I will post the interview on a new thread. I did my best to translate and make sense of the interview..though some of his answers I couldn't make any sense out of them.
Liu Guoliang 4-5. Waldner lost the first 5 matches against Liu, and won the last 4. Waldner also said that Liu was the player he feared the most, especially his serve. After he figured out how Liu played, Waldner won the 4 matches.
Kong Linghui. Waldner couldn't remember the stats exactly, but he said Kong beat him the 1st time they met. Then he won quite a bit in a row before losing to him again in The World Team Championship in 2000.
Wang Liqin EVEN. It's even with him he said. Wang was really young then. However, he lost the last 2, once just before the Olympics 2004, and in the 2004 Olympics. Wang was at the peak of his game then he said.
Ma Lin. He can't remember how many times they played, but Waldner is very sure that MA LIN IS WAY AHEAD. Waldner said, after he figured out Liu Guoliang game, he had a lot of problems with Ma Lin.
    Waldner vs.
    Cai Zhenhua 2-2. EVEN
    Chen Longcan 7-10 TRAILING
    Chen Zhibin 3-2 AHEAD
    Guo Yuehua 0-2 TRAILING
    Jiang Jialiang 4-8 TRAILING
    Ma Wenge 19-5 WAAAY AHEAD
    Teng Yi 23-7 WAAAY AHEAD
    Wang Tao 5-1 AHEAD

He is second only to Ma Long in medals but he faced a stronger competition. His head to head stats are pretty good in big tournaments.

@@dickn.ormous1064 I don’t understand how Ma Long faced less of a competition in peoples minds ... Harimoto, fzd, lin yun ju, xu xin, zhang zhike, ma lin, wang Hao, how are these lesser opponents ... he even played waldner once (agreed both were not in their prime, ma was way too young and Waldner was way too old but ma won 3/1 then) I’m not saying at all Waldner is a bad player, for sure not. But arguing ma had an easier opposition is just blatantly untrue

@@oblarski2478 Wang Hao couldn't beat,Harimoto is not even an adult and trains part time due to academic commitments, lin yun ju same case,Zhang JIke was a cripple in 2016,Xu Xin is a doubles specialist with too many loopholes in his game.Ma Lin wasn't a player of his generation.Ma Long's main opponents were Fang Bo,Falck,Ovtcharov and Mizutani. They are certainly no patch for Persson, young Samsonov,Saive,Gatien and all the Chinese players who were in their 20's trying to catch Waldner.Ma Long had only one younger opponent Fan Zhedong. But Fan isn't allowed to get help from coaches against Ma Long.
Waldner had the whole CNT devising tactics to beat him for more than 20 years.

Unbelievable! If you're the greatest, you can't let this happen! 8-2 and still lost the match! JO fan here that's why it's really heart-breaking.

Both the most extraordinary victory and the most surprising failure have happened to him, and that's what make him a legend among us rather than a dictator above us. It's one of the reason I love JO. Even so, at the end of the day, he got everything he needed to be a legend. There's nothing to be sorry for.

I think Ma Lin is one of the largely underestimated players in Table Tennis. It’s recorded that he’s the player with most spiny serve and difficult to play against. Even legend Timo Boll tells in his interviews that Ma had the most annoying play style. I feel so good to watch his play, though I’m not a penholder❤🏓👏

    • @Mao-x1t
      @Mao-x1t 6 месяцев назад +1

He is still a legend in China. Not underestimated and me myself has a racket same as his. Which sells pretty well in China till now. He has the best forehand among all chinese penholders. And accurate calculation when serving, mostly rely on changing between heavy spin and light spin. Liu Guoliang once said it's really disgusting when you're playing with Ma Lin. 😂You gonna grab a rubbish bin and vomit after playing with Ma Lin.
