@Jean, I'm a newbie to this, so I can't give too much advice about what to paint on the large canvas...? Maybe do a search for "pour painting on large canvas"...?? But as far as clutter goes, I totally understand that!! Clutter in our homes also clutters our mind! I have one room like that too! I found alot of motivation from watching RUclips videos by Cass the ClutterBug, Dawn at Minimal Mom, and Dana K White. I made alot of progress using their advice and tactics! Especially Dana. But, then I slowed down again -_- Have to get back at it! I hope this suggestion helps you even a little bit. Happy Painting!!
Well at least you got a portrait of someone on the matte painting. I have seen it and now I can't unsee it ;-) Very informative video (as usual) so thanks. After last week's video I decided to go for it using the largest canvas I ever used. Due to the large area I did use craft paint black for the background, although I used higher quality for the lines. It turned out pretty good even if I do say so myself. Please continue to educate and stimulate. Have a great week.
Big paintings are nerve wracking and exciting at the same time aren't they? I frequently use the white and black fluid bottles from Artist's Loft for backgrounds. It is so much paint I hear you.
Here, Hawk, you've mentioned black base paint. Can either of you lend opinions on black base paints swallowing up colors? I've tried so many different additives... Flood Flo, Glue & H2O, just water to thin and I'm still losing colors. I THINK all the "pros" we watch use Am-Dam blacks exclusively, which is why they don't have that swallowing of color problem. Obviously those are expensive and I have to order them since NO crafts stores sell them here. What's your go-to, base black brand & additive (if any) that you guys use? Thanks in advance. Yvette in NC
I love the control comparisons of each individual sheen. I have a ton of craft paint that I never use for pouring but you've got me thinking those basic matte paints could be useful as an additive to boost cell production. I already use a formula for my base white for cell pours that contains equal amounts of artist loft soft white and apple barrel matte white white produces so many cells they explode on the canvas BUT I'm wondering now if that same formula using matte craft paint would make my colored pearl bases more predictable. Some colors just won't cell up in my current mix. Thank you for all you do!
Not in the formula I have, from sara taylor. I think the gac 800 adds a binder thats enough to hold it all together. I have another recipe that I like better that I've been using more because Sara's causes a massive explosion of cells and sometimes its more than I want.
They definitely tend to lose their color faster Carrie if they are in direct sunlight for a long time but otherwise they keep their vibrancy pretty well.
Thank you for this. I was just wondering about the difference between them & what I was supposed to use as prepare for my first pour. I love how you teach; your style is a perfect fit for me.
Yeah, enamel paints I'd even consider a step up from these. Just because of the ingredients. But yes they are awesome for cloud pours and other effects like that Janice.

@@LeftBrainedArtist yeah man ive been meaning to make this video for so long I finally got around to it and it was soooo much more editing than I expected 😅
Hi I’m very new to this and at my advanced age of 79 just having fun. I wanted to know your opinion on the dollar store metallics. They are really beautiful and a buck 50? I’m spending a day a week during the summer with my 8 and 10 year old great granddaughters letting them try to pour paints. They are having a blast. I’m sure this paint isn’t going to stand the test of time but that and Amazon panels are a money saver
If they work and you realize they aren't going to be multi-generational art pieces I am all for keeping things as cheap as possible for fun and to practice.
I can see a stretched out face in the third canvas! This was really interesting because that halo effect looks similar to the cloud mix that Mely.D uses, where she mixes Deco Art satin enamel into her white paint
The second one has the most vibrant colors. I have heard you can't use Apple Barrel paints. (For pours). Once varnished they are quite permanent. They do dry too fast. I have used them to paint traditionally for landscapes, flowers etc. but not on pours yet. I heard that they won't work at all. Have you tried them for pours? Thank you, David for doing this for the viewers, such a help. 🎨🖌
I have been using Apple Barrel here lately as a friend gave me a bunch to do a painting for her. I am wanting to start a channel as well but I'm having some difficulties getting started, so videos some day but until then... I actually have been very impressed with tha Apple Barrel paint so far for pours. I've been doing a 1:1 ratio with A.B.:Floetrol and a tiny amount of water. They seem to dry very nice and the colors seem to stay vibrant. Definitely worth trying if you haven't. I am very much new as well, only been painting for a little over a year when I can get time and this guys videos have helped me a ton in the beginning. I love his approach.
They will work for pours. The colors won't be as vibrant in most cases than they will with even a student level acrylic but they will work. Also, white is just not good in craft. I've had too many problems with it so I recommend always springing for a better white Rebecca.
I just had to watch this because I had a few incidents with craftsmart, particularly white and so I was wondering if you experienced the same thing when it dried. I was going to do a comparison video but at this point I’m honestly like whatever, I’d rather not, my painting opportunities are so slim because I’m a stay-at-home also homeschool teacher to a near 6 year-old and so I’d rather actually paint than test because my time is so limited. That said, you’re such a wonderful person that not only makes cool stuff but I really enjoy looking at your videos because you take the time to dig deep, you get into the weeds and I’ve found a lot of my questions answered through a lot of your work. Anyway, where I’m getting at is in the beginning of my pouring journey I bought white craftsmart paint in the quart size, probably matte because it didn’t say anything otherwise, at least I don’t remember. I bought that size because I mean white is such a common color and most people use that as a primary color in their selection. What happened was, I did a split base pour, half with the white and the other half with a light pink by Liquitex Basics, obviously a higher quality paint, but anyway after it dried, just the white part, literally dried like the Sahara desert, all cracked up and nasty. Just horrible. I thought it was just that one time as in I did something wrong so I did a couple more paintings with different whites and they came out fine, also a craft paint and then again with the white craftsmart which again, ended up looking really bad. If you ever feel like it, maybe do an experiment using white craftsmart paint vs another white craft paint and see if you have the same turnout? It was just with the white oddly, no other craft paint color turned out bad and not mixed with other colors, it was a base color only. I’d be interested in seeing what yours ends up like. I did Dutch pours so my consistency was pretty fluid. I don’t use craft paints anymore, just student and artist grade with the exception of 1 “extreme sheen” copper by DecoArt. Anyway, as always I enjoy your channel and if you ever feel like doing that experiment please let me know (if you haven’t already), or if you have please send me the link! 😊 thank you for always responding to my questions!
White craft paints are made with a chalky substance rather than titanium white so they dry like the desert just like you say. The thinner you go the more likely that will happen as they don't have enough binders to let them get thinned that much.
I have found that a lot of how it turns out depends on the quality of reg acrylics or acrylic craft paints. the cheapest i tried was Anitas. I did a bright red with gold and the "Brilliant Red" faded to a sickly pink in about a month. the "Anker" brand is crap too. Craft Acrylic I use now is Deco Art Americana and Crema Coat i think it is. I also have a lot of reg acrylic's of different brands that are pretty much student grade. The colors in the Deco Art are staying strong so far after a couple month's.
Yeah, thats about my experience also. If they aren't in the direct sunlight for a long period of the day they are generally ok. Reds and oranges seem to fade more than other colors. That's why I always recommend a good varnish on all paintings you plan to hang for the UV light protection.
Wow! Amazing how they are so different. I have bought some Monte Mart paints. Is that considered craft paint? Thanks David, I always learn so much for you.
No, I would consider Monte Mart student level. They actually show pigment names and all their colors don't seem to be transparent and runny like craft paint usually is.
Hi David! This is a little off topic, but have you done a video about AL Soft Body Acrylic and how it differs from their Flow Acrylic, (which they apparently don't make anymore)? I know it behaves differently, but I've seen very few videos addressing this or how to compensate for the difference.
they are the same thing in the consistency and use. However, there is something they removed or changed that makes the effects different. I haven't done any testing like that yet so I'd refer you to Ckanella ciraco art as I believe she has talked about this.
Very interesting. As you say craft paints are good for practice . Thanks to your guidance I moved to better quality acrylics and love certain brands more than others . Forever a student right.? Always something new. Anyways I ran out of paint the other day so being cheap till my order from Jerry’s Artarama came I bought some Tempera paints at The local Walmart store and started to experiment with them . Got the shock of my life when I started to pour with them.. They work! I had to make some adjustments to my glue/water pouring medium to make them work for me but honestly this stuff is cheaper than craft paints! I wish you would do a video of Tempera as a pour alternative . And how it tests out when used. They were not as terrible as I remembered tempera paints to be . My glue /water mix had to be 50/50 for this but that’s not bad for pouring. The colors stay bright and intense even when dry. Plus it seems they are protected from melting .
I’ve used some tempera paint I had lying around since the color was sooooo nice and I was surprised at how well it worked. I sometimes find tempera paint has more vibrant colors but I still use it minimally since from what I read it doesn’t hold up the test of time…. But then again I resin my paintings maybe then it doesn’t matter. Ugh too much thinking lol.
I have a video on tempera paints. ruclips.net/video/PMCz3X_v2sA/видео.html I have found they do work but they have so much volume (much more fluffy than regular acryilics) that they always look pretty much the same.
I wonder if matte paint makes more cells for the same reason metallics do; higher particulate content. Matte paint has particulate to dull sheen and metallics have metal metal dust/bits.
Great video and info as always, I initially started with garage sale paints, Dollar Tree, then moved up the line...quite an expensive hobby (I am disabled). David, have you ever done a live auction to sell your artwork? Do you primarily sell locally or online? Thanks so much!
If you have matte paint, can you add a little varnish to it to get a shine? This way maybe you wouldn’t need to varnish it when it dries. Just wondering.
Yes you could Debbie. However, I always varnish regardless to give it some added UV protection and to fill any pinholes and other imperfects to prevent dut and grim from accumulating.
What do you think of the premixed pour paints? I'm using DecoArt Fluid art Ready To Pour paints for my pours. I tried mixing myself with a pouring medium and it was a disaster as I'm just not technical enough to get the mixture even. But do you like the Ready to Pour at all?
You don't need any pouring medium if you already have ready to mix paints. They already have pouring medium in them. I haven't tried ready to mix paints but this is the third person asking me about them today so I guess I need to do a video soon. 8)
@@LeftBrainedArtist Wow, thanks for replying! I do use the premixed but when I tried mixing myself I used regular acrylic paint not the premixed. Sorry if that was confusing how I worded it lol. Love your vids. The butane torch I ordered just arrived today so I am excited to use it!!! 🤗
Yup, that's why I don't recommend it. Especially with a medium like floetrol that doesn't have a ton of binders. If you thin it a lot it is especially bad.

I would assume the same thing.
Lol Heimy. I know the feeling. So many little things to think about.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you I will check it out. :)
@@LeftBrainedArtist fluffy? Explain please?
I wonder if matte paint makes more cells for the same reason metallics do; higher particulate content. Matte paint has particulate to dull sheen and metallics have metal metal dust/bits.
The matting agent is probably very light compared to regular pigments. Just like the mica flakes and other materials the make metallics shine.
Great video and info as always, I initially started with garage sale paints, Dollar Tree, then moved up the line...quite an expensive hobby (I am disabled). David, have you ever done a live auction to sell your artwork? Do you primarily sell locally or online? Thanks so much!
I have not sold anything other then friends and family lately. I need to get to that soon. They are piling up in my art room.
@@LeftBrainedArtist I totally understand! I paint rocks and other than the ones I have given away or hidden, definitely need to get rid of more.
May I ask what you sprayed on the test canvas after you wiped it ?
I didn't spray anything but I did use a torch to pop the bubbles and that is what made the cells form.
where do you get the giant push pins from?
Amazon - amzn.to/3p22Qqe
Thank you so much
How do you get phantom cells?
I am not sure what phantom cells are. Can you point me to a video or description? Ghost pour?
when I used Apple Barrel white I had cracking..
Yup, that's why I don't recommend it. Especially with a medium like floetrol that doesn't have a ton of binders. If you thin it a lot it is especially bad.
ME - (two hours ago) "OK! I'm doing it!" (Proceeds to order everything from Walmart needed to do the pour from LefrBrainArtist Beginner START TODAY video) (2oz Paints, canvases, 5oz cups, glue)
...
ALSO ME - (two hours later) Comes across this video that says "this could really mess up your....) and holds my breath throughout most of the video wondering which type will destroy my pour painting AND wondering WHAT type I even ORDERED 😆🤦♀️ I got so excited, I realized that I didn't even READ what TYPE of paint it was, I was just looking for the little 2oz bottles of acrylics he used!! 😅🤦♀️😆🤦♀️😆🤦♀️😆
Went back to look at my order... I got a 12 pack of 2oz bottles of FolkArt matte acrylic paints for about $11.
...I hope it comes out ok...
...waiting for delivery...
With glue it shoudl be fine. Don't go over 1:1 ratio plus water. I would avoid the white all together.
@@LeftBrainedArtist
HAHA, YEP! I didn't use the white!
I posted another video yesterday, this one was of my 1st ACRYLICS ATTEMPT, and I SO wanted to use white, but I only had the inexpensive white and I was like "NOPE, NOPE, NOPE!!" LOL
I put a link to your "Easy Acrylic Pour Painting for Beginners - TODAY is the day you do your first Painting" video in my video description box and gave you a shout out in my video.
You are appreciated!! 😊👍😊👍😊
Whoa whoa whoa……”start out with craft paint”…else other kind of paint is there? I’m watching your channel in order order youtube lines them up & Ive never heard you talk yet about other kinds of paint. May I have a link or title of your video that speaks of “other kinds of paint”
Sure thing Barb - ruclips.net/video/QkfKSzFFKXc/видео.html - the description has some more info too.
