  • Pruning and de-wiring my 4 year old Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) bonsai grove
About 4 years ago I had planted a random Dwarf Jade cutting in a shallow oval bonsai pot.
It rooted and grew in a rather odd fashion. The tree had two trunks wide apart. I had initially thought of splitting/separating them into two trees but later decided to keep it as is. I added two small cuttings on either side of it to turn it into a clump or grove kind of arrangement.
Over the years it has been developing quite well and I think it has the potential to become a bonsai forest arrangement in the future.
In this video I pruned it down a bit and removed the wires I had used last year to shape the branches.

Your jade bonsai is really beautiful. The shape reminds me of another tree I liked a lot when I was a child. What kind of soil do you use for your jade tree ? My husband offered me an old jade bonsai more than ten years ago but I think I will get it killed. It got sick, was treated, I got sick, it survived but barely ^^' I changed the old soil this summer to limit the reinfestation of "cochenille" that never really left and because I never did it in more than ten years. But I can't get it to thrive like yours. I will take any advice you have time to share. And thank you for all your inspiring and nice to watch videos :)

Thanks. You can style your tree again when it grows back. They are fast growers too.

The great thing about these is the way the leaves are opposite to the last pair, meaning you can prune them for direction. One of the great things, I mean!

The audio spikes when the scissors snap make this video kind of unpleasant to watch, despite the nice bird audioscape....
