    I have no problems with clipping birds wings but I need to suggest some things. I suggest you hold the bird's body and keep the wing out with your index finger and thumb, that way you won't be pulling on the bird. And you also cut too far up. You don't have to listen to my advice, but I would rather you did.

      Tracey Ryche White You’re very welcome. But I advise you, do not do just one side of the way through bird will fly in circles and get all confused. It sounds funny to read, but in reality it’s really sad. Because the bird just has no idea how to correct itself. But I’m glad you got one site down and done. Congratulations. If you feel like you are having trouble or you don’t want to do the other side, take your break to a vet or to a pet store. It’s really important that they have equal wings on both sides. I’m not getting down on you, rather the opposite. I’m pretty proud of you. :-) Thanks for thanks watching all the videos and have a great day. Just.

    wings grow back like hair does . so if you have a bird that fly's into walls into windows ceiling fans ect. your telling me it's not safer for the bird to have them trimmed? they can still glide to floors or when landing. I personally don't trim my african greys wings cuz he's trained by my cockateils will fly into things . so keep her cooped up in cage cuz she fly's into stuff or cut wings so she can roam outside cage ? I choose cut her wings for her safety and health. this comment if for the people who says it's mean to cut feather or it's like cutting our legs off.

      you don't know how much it impacts the bird health physicaly and mentaly.
      The body of a bird is designed to fly. It has a respiratory system and muscle that are powerful and because of that it needs to be used.
      Trimming wings make the bird unable to fly and so unable to do the important execice of flying for his body health.
      That can cause the bird to gain weigh and a muscular atrophy what can result some illnessdue due to a lack of exercices.
      The bird who can't fly anymore will also be stressed because he won't be able to do what he could always do( flying ). It will be very insecure on every perch because if it falls it falls and will lose confidence on itself and on it's owner.

    My parrot passed away because a worker clipped her wing by holding her improperly and my bird twisted wrong and broke her wing badly. She ended up passing away in surgery on my birthday. A tragedy that could have been prevented by properly securing your bird during the clipping of its wings. Just something to think about

      You’re very welcome Tiffany. I’m glad this video helped. If you are unable to clip the wings comfortably, you can take him or her to a vet or even to a pet store. And once you see how they do it, you’ll be able to do it on your own. Or maybe you can just look at the video to her three times, I’m not really sure what would help you the best. But I am a strong supporter of clip in the wings because we lost our first period. We thought it was really cool for it to us fly around in the house and go from curtain to chair to other objects. And then one day the window was open like it always was and a bookshelf fell over in the bird got scared and flew out the window and we never saw her again. It was realReally tragic. So have a great day, good luck, and thank you so much for watching all my videos. Jeff.

    They can't glide away from predators or other accidents

    • @jeffmaggie
      @jeffmaggie  Год назад

      Fortunately, there aren’t any predators inside ones house. And as far as being outside, you should never let your bird outside whether it’s clipped or not clipped. Unless it’s in a cage. And that’s not because it’ll fly way, but you’re right it’s because of predators. But it sounds to me like you’re not a fan of clipping bird feathers. So let me just give you an example or an analogy that I’ve been using, and I think it makes sense. We clip birds feathers so they don’t accidentally fly away. And so they don’t bump into objects in the house, or bang into windows. It’s the same principle as taking care of your goldfish. You wouldn’t take your goldfish to a lake let it out and then expected to swim back to the bowl. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great day. Jeff.

    • @catherinetaylor5727
      @catherinetaylor5727 Год назад

      @jeffmaggie no you're analogy is more like clip the tipof the fins off the fish they will grow back but untill they do they can't swim properly and won't bump into the tank walls and if it went into a pond it would be even more of an issue. . Maybe you need to stick to non flying creatures maybe get a chicken...... flight is important for physical amd mental health in birds

    My blue and gold macaw is fully flighted and has always been since he was a baby because I love him and if he did get out I'd have some relief knowing he could fly instead of getting killed by a cat or bird of prey, an easy better solution to this is teaching your parrot simple recall this way if they get out they will have the training and skills to come back, my macaw is free flight trained so I can let him fly free outside and he Is trained to come back aka free flight

      OK, so this works for you. I’m very happy. Please listen carefully, this video is not for you. I repeat this video is not for you. You will never ever be happy if you clip your birds wings. And your bird is smarter than all the other birds to know where it lives. So for that I’m grateful. Continued success in keeping your bird full flighted as this video is only for people who have normal birds that will fly out a window or a door. And you’re right, nobody wants to get eaten by a cat or animal, but if you keep your flight feathers full, the bird might get scared, not your bird, but other people‘s Berg. So this video is really for the other people and I’m so sorry that you happen to cross against cross along this video. I wish you nothing but absolute continued success with your full flighted Bird and may you enjoy a happy healthy life with him or her. Thanks for watching my video. Jeff.

    YOU ARE CLIPPING THE FEATHERS WRONG, YOU ARE CUTTING THE 1-4 AND THOSE ARE THE DIRECTION FEATHERS, YOU HAVE TO CUT THE 5-8 (THE RED ONES) BECAUSE THAT FEATHERS HELP THE PARROT FLY UP (SO THE BIRD CANT FLY TO THE SKY BUT AT LEAST HE CAN FLY NICELY TO THE FLOOR AND SAFE) AND IF YOU REALY LOVE YOUR BIRD YOU SHOULD BUILD AN AVIARY

    • @jeffmaggie
      @jeffmaggie  5 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment. I do appreciate you leaving it. And I’m sure there’s more than one way to do this, but I found it by clip in the outer for it works very well for me. The outer for feathers for the flight feathers. You can tell this because when the bird has his wings tucked in you don’t notice any color disruption in the feathers. So I clip my birds feathers so they glide in a downward position as hard as they can fly and land about 5 feet in front. Doing any less would allow them to keep level flight and take it vantage of an updraft. But I like your way too. Thanks for leaving your comment, even though it’s all in capital letters. I’m assuming that you’re angry with me. And for that I apologize. I would keep clipping your feathers the same way you’ve been clipping them. You seem to have really good success with that and I support people that have good success with their animals. Have a wonderful day, take care, and thanks for watching all my videos. Jeff.

I agree there are many ways to do this. The way I found seems to be the best for me. For me, the idea is not to give her the opportunity to have level flight. But also you don’t want to cut the wings so the bird falls on the ground. What you’re looking for is it gentle dissent down to the ground in about 5 feet. The land on their feet are on the chest but at least they won’t fly out the window. I’d Meyer the fact that you worked in the veterinary clinic and I appreciate your advice. I will check out your link. Thank you for the kind comment in the advice and have a great day. And remember, your English is great. Bye, Jeff

      Hi Cody, you’re right, many people do not like to clip their wings. And as long as you keep all the doors and windows closed, you’re in great shape. Oh the other thing is you need to carry Clorox wipes with you because the bird will poop everywhere in the house it lands. So clip in the wings is really good because it prevents the birds from flying out a window or a door if he gets scared or startled. And it’s also good because all the poop stays in one place. The other great advantages once the bird knows he can’t fly it will never go off your shoulder. So it’s all awesome every way you look at it. If you are someone whoWants to clip wings. If you don’t want to clip wings. I fully support you too. This is such a personal decision, it’s like politics and religion and favorite rock groups and anything else that people can form an opinion of. So I respect your opinion and I do appreciate your comment. Have a great day and if you get a chance watch my other videos. Jeff.

      @@jeffmaggie The process of wing clipping isn't painful but the aftermath is. It puts unnecessary strain on their muscles causing permanent damage, mental and physical health issues such as fatty liver disease, obesity, anxiety, depression, muscle atrophy, wing fusion and more. Flying with clipped wings is also painful, most clipped birds develop feather plucking habits from it and other self-harm obsessions. Clipping for training reasons is abuse and neglect. Trust takes patience and if the only reason your bird likes you is because it cannot escape you, that is the opposite of trust. If you are struggling with a bird who commonly runs into walls, you should try a slower approach and more direct desensitization training. This is a extremely unsafe way of doing this. Please consult an avian vet to properly train you how to clip your birds. I don’t recommend clipping, but in the case that it is for the safety of the parrot. Then sometimes it is necessary. The way this guy did it was extremely stressful to the parrot, and much too short. If you clip it that short, the bird will not have the ability to glide down, and will just fall hard on the ground. Most likely resulting in potential injuries. So please consult a vet before clipping your birds wings.

(she actually ended up flying away and we have never seen her since, all because we didn't clip her wings) and if you are a vet for vet office (which i think you are) i et your just saying this to get sales because my professional vet with a license does it the same way with maybe even clipping 7-8 feathers.

    • @jeffmaggie
      @jeffmaggie  6 лет назад

      Lola Vlogz I think we all understand where the birds purposes. Wildbird to Mint to fly freely wherever they want to go. I go for a day or two or even three without any food when you clean water. They also might be hunted by a lot of predators and might be I’m safe at night. Now, as far as birds their pets, you don’t want to let them fly outside because once they’re outside, they won’t be able to stay safe, find food and water, and send off predators. So I get what you’re saying about birds need to be wild. I agree with you. Wild birds need to be wild and they need to go and fly wherever they want to be, but if you have a bird is a pet, the last thing you wanted to do was get scared and flat window and over the fence. It’ll never come back and I will go up to the tallest tree and you’ll be sitting there very frustrated waiting for the bird to come down. And the bird won’t come down. So you’ve just lost a bird. Could be $10 to be $100 could be $1000, but to you it’s a family member. So we take this very seriously. We clip are birds feathers because we believe there are birds are part of our family. Just like we won’t let our children running the streets because it’s dangerous, we also won’t let our birds fly and clipped. Now you can also say that preventing children from running around in the front yard and Is limiting their freedom. But it’s a lot better than going to a funeral. Thank you so much for watching my video and leaving your comment. I do understand your point and I’m grateful that you left a message. Thank you and have a great day and stay safe and healthy. Jeff. I think if you have a pet parrot, indoors, it's safer , so they don't get hurt. When my bird's wings are clipped, she can be out of her cage 24/7. When she can fly all through the apartment, she likes to get on top of my refrigerator and behind it are wooden cabinets that she can chew. Since I don't own this place, it's just better all around for her wings to be clipped. Thank you for sharing this video.

      Perfectly said. I applied you 100%. Unfortunately, a lot of these comments are negative. But I’ve taken to responding to them in my own unique way by suggesting that if they had a pet goldfish, would they take it to the lake and let it out of the bowl and expected to return. But you’re right, keeping the birds wings clipped is not an issue for the bird and it’s a safety issue for us. Then we can take them outside and play. Thank you so much for leaving a positive comment. Have a great day. Jeff.

      The process of wing clipping isn't painful but the aftermath is. There are so many other options you could do for your bird, and if this is what you choose, you are clearly not thinking hard enough. If you don't want your bird to fly you shouldn't get a BIRD.

      Adventures Of Valle Tage No torture, it’s like clipping fingernails and toenails and cutting hair. It only hurts if you pull it out. We’re not doing that. But I understand your concern. Birds are meant to fly and people are meant to walk. However birds can also survive quite well with their wings clipped. This gives them great to security and more confidence to stay fly around the house. Yes, our use the word fly because the birds can still fly in glide, they just can’t get any left. Hope this helps and have a great day. Thanks for leaving a comment Jeff.

      Adventures Of Valle Tage So it’s not exactly quite like cutting your legs off. It’s more like somebody giving you really really tight jeans and you’re not able to run very fast and very far. But you won’t be able to hurt yourself by running into a wall or running away off property and down the street. You also won’t be able to climb a tree. So there are advantages. And if your jeans are tight enough, your owner will be able to run faster than you can. But that’s only if the bird is wearing jeans. Thanks for watching all the videos and have a great day. Jeff.

    Don’t reply too these sensitive idiot. You did it right but you forgot too tell the people whatever wings you clip make sure that they are evenly clipped on each side for example 4 on the left four on the right or three on the left three on the right and so on.... some birds don’t like they wings touched so it takes time with building a comfort zone. Some birds are comfortable too where you can do it with ease I’m glad my bird doesn’t mind his nails or wings clipped he’s a laid back green cheek. And it’s safer with the wings clipped. It gives the bird a slower and safer flight. Not a speedy flight too where if it was on the perch and a loud bang for example a pot hitting the floor may scare it and it evades because it got startled and rams himself into the wall mirror or window. These people are ignorant too the fact of this. But yea get a tripod and more detail on future vids. And the guideline was a great tip for the people too. We don’t want them cutting the wings that carry blood. That’s a fact. Peace bredren

      Jada Mane Sorry, I replied to everybody, even if it’s very insensitive and cruel. I believe that everybody should have a right to free speech and as a result, you will see negative comments and people who are very upset with clipping bird feathers. And I get it. They’ve never had an experience with they’ve lost to bird before. As you know, birds are part of the family and we do that only to make sure they stay with us. It’s just like kids, we don’t let them run up the street and go to different neighborhoods are expected to come back when they’re only six years old. So I get what you’re saying, but I do need to leave all of the comments up just to keep everything equal. And obviously I don’t agree with anything but with everything but I have a very open minded I’m happy to welcomeComments that are different than mine. @jeffmaggie  5 лет назад

      So I completely agree with you. In the fact that you’re justified in expressing your own opinion. Should these feathers have been cut back too far, I would not have uploaded the video. But I understand your point of you on wanting to leave the bird feathers alone. Everybody has their own expectations of what a bird canning cannot do once it flies up the front door and across the street. Some people think that the bird smart enough to come back home while others know that the bird will never come back home. Birds get scared just like we do. Loud noises. Certain movements. Quick movements. And if they happen to be next to an open window or door, they will fly out and there might not be able to recognize how they are able to get back. Especially if they’ve crossed over a fence or over a tall tree. So in that case, it would be very smart to go back in time and clip the feathers. Unless of course you think it’s better to lose a family member rather than should just put a little bit of security into it. We do the same thing with their dogs by putting them on a leash. We don’t want them to run away. Or get hit by a car. I know that’s a big difference a dog and a bird, but it’s the only thing I can think of right now. Have a great day and thanks so much for watching all my videos and even more thanks for leaving a comment. I do appreciate all feedback. Jeff.
