I'm an old-timer butt it doesn't matter when you find the BHS, they will blow your mind forever, whenever.
yes indeed, was enjoying watching your footage of the band on nyc tv, and the link to Danny and the Nightmares cover. take care
I only seen the Butthole Surfers live once here in England in 1989 and it's up there with the best shows I've ever seen live
It must have been amazing.
Would have loved to see them live!
I am a fan from waaaay back. Saw them live twice in ‘86, six times in ‘87, and a few times in later years. The ‘87 shows in support of this LP were brilliant, mind-expanding, terrifying spectacles. It really is impossible to convey the awesome vertiginous, somewhat sinister, crazy atmosphere these shows created. My copy of LAT has custom artwork of an ejaculating dog drawn by Paul in black Sharpie over the clown cover. Irreplaceable!
Appreciate the great show stories, your personal cover art is truly one of a kind. hope your well
Great review, i enjoyed your track, too. BHS are my all-time favourite bands. Funny enough i in the 1980s my friend who was a member of Naparm Desth introduced me to them. At the time it really strangely reminded me of the great Frank Zappa . Thsnk you
Appreciate it the kind comment. Glad you like the track also. What a very interesting way to get into the band, I agree about the Zappa reference. Take care
Awesome job on the track!! Definitely captures the spirit of the BHS!
Yeah, Locust is one of my favorite albums! Used to have four copies. Probably one of if not best band of the 80s and Locust is their pinnacle in my opinion! Along with Psychic and Hairway that’s the holy trinity!
Saw them in 88 or 89, craziest concerts I’ve ever seen!
Hope all is well!! Cheers, Jon
Glad you enjoyed the track Jon. The band is amazing definitely a head of what was going on in sound during the 1980s mainstream radio. Hope all is well
Wow! Creative!
It appears that your back in the groove. It’s nice to see you unwinding from the long school year of teaching. May you continue doing things you enjoy.
Keep Spinning Shaun , you are good with record reviews.
It’s quite obvious that music has always been a major part of your life. I like that you have a broad spectrum of all kinds of music.
😊😊😊😊 13:22
Appreciate it, glad you enjoyed. Be well
I have only ever had "Locust Abortion Technician" on Cd. I do like "Hairway To Steven" and "Electric larryland" as well ! Another fine LP review by you Shaun ! Killer band, indeed .🤡
Glad you enjoyed the review, I do not think I ever saw the release on cd.
@@shaunspins I got mine at my local indie back in 2000. I double checked to see that I have it on my Windows Media.. And I do , along with 3 other mentioned titles ! Crazy good record Shaun, nice review !
@@jtsrecordroom3963 its a great record
I always heard about this band, but never learned as much about them as I did with your video Shaun....thanks for the info and vid.... will check them out!
Glad you enjoyed. You have me thinking about De La Soul all week. Hope all is well
@@shaunspins hope all is well with you too buddy...cheers
Yes.Maybye my favourite album.I’ve shown it about 3 times.I’m fascinated by the inconsistency of thought. How do you come up with an idea like ‘Hay’ ‘Weber’ ‘USSA’?..and then shift to something like ‘Human Cannonball’ & why do I like those snippets of madness? If another band tried it, it would sound terrible. No song has impacted me like ‘22 going on 23’. The closest would be ‘Hamburger Lady’ by Throbbing Gristle which I’m guessing you know? I bought ‘Slacker’ on VHS when it came out & have to admit to watching it about 50 times, but I was deep in a similar world of madness/lethargy that film portrayed myself in 91, so maybe it just struck a chord.Ends with the Buttholes ‘People Die Everyday’ & then that easy listening track ‘Skokiaan’ which seems very Buttholes in spirit. Fascinating track you came up with Shaun.
I can imagine that you and I would enjoy very much sitting around listening to music together. I have been thinking about re watching Slacker it has been a very long time since I have seen it and maybe it might sit different with me now. Glad you liked the track and hope all is well.
@@shaunspins Agreed! Would be great. It’s dawned on me recently that what I enjoy in art is the idea ‘There’s something wrong behind the white picket fence’ Sort of David Lynchian. I love the photography of Diane Arbus, William Eggleston, Bruce Davidson, Stephen Shore. The Buttholes seem like a musical representation of that.
@@Harrispilton22 Interesting thought, the early sup pop era goes hand and hand for me with images of Charles Peterson. I really feel that the Butthole Surfers really pushed what modern art/music can be.
This is the first I’m hearing of Teresa Taylor 💙 great video homage Shaun!
I liked how you put that song together with the distortion and layers.
Can definitely hear the surfers influence. Excellent work 👍🎸🤘
Glad you enjoyed the music track. hope all is well
One of the greatest bands of the 80's. So sad to have heard about Teresa Taylor's death. I was lucky enough to see them on what was probably the last time they came to Australia in maybe 2002 I think. It was mind blowing! 22 Going On 23 is truly disturbing, but amazing. Cheers...Ben
I feel one of the greatest bands of any era, just as fresh and new today as they were in the past. Have you seen any other bands that might of only made it out your way one time?
@@shaunspins I'm pretty sure Butthole Surfers came to Australia one other time in the late 80's when I was too young to get in.
I saw Wild Flag on their one & only tour, I saw the Evens, Roky Erickson, Pierced Arrows (although that was Dead Moon with a different drummer), and many I can't think of right now.
@@benrankins4446 I really like the Evens. Great band
@@shaunspins Totally agree. If Ian Mackye is involved, I’m always interested
Butthole Surfers rule! I have everything from Psychic to Weird Revolution on lp and cd. I know it's crazy but Surfers are my top 10 bands of all time. Cheers from Finland!
They are a great band, creative. Do you have a favorite record of theirs?
@@shaunspins Rotates on the first four albums
@@petrirantanenthe first and this record for me are always playing
Not weird at all. Depending on the day, BHS are either my #1 or #2 favorite band...that ranking alternates with Ween.
@@maskedman1337 Its been a minute since I have spent some time listening to Ween.
The pinnacle of this band imo
I agree, great record
ah i’ll have to look this up. have a handful of their CDs but this one never crossed my path. dig the OJIIs. one of my boards have them as well. bummed ya didnt like Slacker. Always loved that film from day one.
I think you would enjoy this album, really creative. Those wheels are from my one board from the 80s that survived. I will give Slacker another view after not seeing it for many many years. Some of the movies from that director I really really like, some not so much. Hope all is well
@@shaunspins yeh i agree about Linklater. I still have trouble forgiving him for remaking Bad News Bears. But Dazed & Confused is one of my favorites of all-time. And Slacker was a big inspiration for me.
@@STEVEHEROLD I really enjoy movie Boyhood, his version of SubUrbia is interesting with Sonic Youth soundtrack. I remember seeing that in theater. I was really disappointed with Everybody Wants Some!!, that movie was one I was waiting to see for some time before it came out. Dazed i used to watch on VHS. Another director and movie for me that inspired me and could relate a lot to story was John Waters, Pecker 1998.
@@shaunspins yeh i really didn't dig Boyhood. Saw it opening day and some of it just fell flat. I need to revisit it. I saw Suburbia opening day too and thought it was OK. Rewatched it maybe a year ago and liked it more than I did originally. Have you ever seen Oliver Stone's Talk Radio? It's based on another Eric Bogosian's play. Always dug it. And yeh dude I'm with you I really was excited by the prospects of Linklater making a "spiritual" sequel to Dazed and then Everybody Wants Some comes out and was just really disappointing. Waters is hit or miss with me. Not sure if I've ever seen Pecker. I feel like that was his last film, am I right?
@@STEVEHEROLD Pecker is an older movie, yet towards the end of making a lot of movies. Great story. Boyhood I could relate to certain parts of main character. I have not seen that Stone movie. I can still remember my shock watching Everybody Wants Some after waiting what seem like forever. Re watched Slacker last night, was way better then I remember. Another movie I like is The Thing Called Love, used to watch that VhS alot
bs are a huge influence on my music, i'm always ripping them off, same with velvet underground and bowie i even did a cover of human cannonball!, enjoyed your review, you clearly love this stuff as much as i do! your song sounds well janky, spot on!
Im glad you enjoyed. Was nice hearing your cover, plus I enjoyed the song you did called "ceiling fan." I kind of see Jeremiah in your graphic with change to words, do you enjoy Daniels music?
@@shaunspins thanks for the kind words, i love daniel, he's a huge inspiration (i know the life of an artist all too well! lol) i barely know what i'm doing musically and folks like him have given me the courage to embrace that amateurism and be open about it. looking forward to watching more of your stuff, heres hoping your endeavours find the success you deserve!
@@davidhatred7275 I appreciate your kind words about videos. I have a few drawings from Daniel, glad I get to see them every day. Amazing creative artist/musician. Ceiling fan has been my favorite song of yours
@@shaunspins always loved dans art, you're very lucky to own some! thanks for the kind words about ceiling fan, i dont often get anything pleasant sounding at the end of my creative process so i appreciate the love!
The track was awesome. I kept saying to myself - When is the distorted guitar going to make an appearance? I'm vaguely familiar with the Butthole Surfers. I was introduced to their music by Kurt. I know of that album but have not heard it in years. I need to stream it. I'll keep my eyes open for an extra for you when I'm out hunting in the wild!! Cheers, Shaun.
Glad you enjoyed the track. Appreciate you keeping watch for another copy.
@@shaunspins Shaun - FYI I sent you an email.
@@mad4vinyl802 thanks I sent a response
Locust Abortion Technician and Hairway to Stephen are a great pairing
Mine is Locust and the first EP or live album
I'm just waiting for episode 49. Kinda wondering what's the hold up? I'm goin' to move down to Florida, so I'm running out of time.
Interesting usage of lyric, episode 49 is up.
I made a tape of this literally from a skateboarding friend from Colorado around 1991
I could imagine you and I could put together a interesting list of music brought to us by skateboarding
@shaunspins Firehose, Black Flag and rap off the top of my head
@@Shawn_at_UNDERGROUND_TAPES Hip hop was very big in the 90s for skateboarding. It interesting to me also to see how many of us skaters make art and music also.
