I've always loved this song from the minute I heard it in 1979. It's unfortunate that it was underrated, because this song has everything: beautiful organ, great lead guitar, superb vocals from Terry Watkinson, and best of all, lyrics which are almost poetic. Words like 'When the wind comes rising from a distant storm', and 'Unwrap yourself for a starving man' makes us think of something mystical and beautiful. Thanks Max Webster for this wonderful and memorable song, a superb example of truly great song-writing.

I can't get this song out of my head either. It must be the lyrics, they mean a lot more than what we are hearing. Also, the lead singer's voice is incredible.

I went and saw him at Thr Amphitheatre at Wonderland in the late 80's! We were really stoned and he was playing some of his solo dongs that really never took off! Everyone was holding their Bic Lighters up for one of these songs! I can't remember the song. But the song finished and the crowd at Kingswood was pretty Melo affter the song,! So I stood up and screamed " play some f*cking WEBSTER!"
And he heard me and he said I hear someone wants to hear some Max Webster?
Then he rolled right into "Check", and it was Webster for the next 60 minutes!
    It was AWESOME!
Kingswood was a great place to see a concert! I saw Scorpions there as well!

KIM MITCHELL and his band mates are AMAZING Musicians and Terry Watkinson, the original keyboardist and #songwriter of this, highlights his vocal talents.

Great song, but sadly it was the begging of the end for the Mighty Max-the original and best line-up, anyway. It’s hard for someone with lead singer and songwriter aspirations to play second fiddle, so I understand Terry’s frustration. But sadly, he abandoned the very thing that brought him success. I seem to remember the drummer from Glass Tiger doing similar: he was the ‘pretty one’ in the band and had lead singer aspirations, so he went ‘solo’. Sadly, neither ever went very far outside of their reactive bands. Not a judgement call, just speaking as a fan.

Canadian rock has always been misunderstood by a lot of people in the USA. Except for hard rock like Moxy, Triumph, and a small band called Rush. I think it's because most pop-rock Cdn bands tend to play "softer" than their American counterparts (even the Mighty April Wine did some memorable soft rocking tunes), and the USA favoured more traditional stuff, except of course, until Van Halen and Boston Came around. Just my 2c.

    • @stevestruthers6180

@@quiltedpine7027 Canadians also have a different ethic. It's hard to pin down and put into words, but it's there, and Americans don't get it. I think part of what's going on is that Canadians are more introspective, reflective and subtle.

These lyrics are almost like a poem: they have a deep meaning which we cannot be expected to understand. When I hear this song, and I hear 'When the wind comes rising from a distant storm', I stop in my tracks and wonder exactly what he means. This fellow Terry Watkinson could have become a great writer, no doubt.
