    What makes Umbridge so effective is unlike Voldemort, who was a fantastical Big Bad, she was far too relatable because everyone recognised her traits in that one sadistic teacher they hated, or that spiteful, child-hating old lady they always avoided, or that petty, vindictive person in a position of authority that you were forced to deal with. Helped along by an utterly masterful performance by the great Imelda Staunton as well.

      Not only awful teachers, but try working a job where you have someone like Umbridge as your boss. I worked for a Dolores Umbridge-like authority figure from a previous job I worked. It was at a pretty big company too. She was the ultimate power-hungry and micromanaging narcissist. An absolute insufferable, petty, vindictive, and dictatorial tyrant that hides behind this charming, kind, and gentle façade, but then jumps down your throat and humiliates you the second she thinks you are challenging or even questioning her methods, or her reign.

    Burke should be #1, why? He alone is responsible for over 80 families deaths, a squad of marines and and was playing Ripley the whole time. His need for greed showed even less humanity than the Xenomorphs, after all "I don't know which species is worse, at least you don't see'em killing each other for a goddamn percentage"

    • @MrRobarino
      @MrRobarino Месяц назад +5

      No. Umbridge is far more relatable to people for all the wrong reasons. Everyone has met a person who acted like Umbridge in one form or another. Think of any spiteful teacher you had in school. Or the person behind the counter at the DMV who made you wait 2 hours for something that can be done in 2 minutes. Or the head of an HOA who lets authority go to her head and fined you for having a garden. The entitled woman at a grocery store who cuts in line at the checkout counter. ....Just think of any of the "Karen" horror stories you've read about online.

    • @CaptainManaFruit
      @CaptainManaFruit Месяц назад

      @@themastema1189 I think what they are comparing isn't the death toll. We as humans have a statistical sealing of what we could empathize with. Example: You know one person who died vs seeing 100 people die vs hearing how 10,000 people died. Once the stake get so astronomically large (over 50 million), we are well out of the scope of empathizing with the victims unless we see a scrolling list of names and pictures. Burke's and in turn Weyland-Yutani's actions of how many who'd die is freaking barbaric at best, no one disagrees, but as viewers, the idea of trillions and more dying is literally impossible to imagine. We don't have--rather we can't have--empathy for the individuals we see off screen. We feel more for the onscreen characters because to the viewer, they are real.
      Now, with Umbridge, it becomes the opposite because, most if not all viewers know someone like her in real life that has made their lives a living hell. It's not because of her kill count, but because of who she is and what she represents to the viewer. With Burke and Weyland-Yutani, we think of billionaires, current day companies and corporate suits as their closest counterpart. With Umbridge, we think of that one teacher/customer/person who lorded their minuscule power over us to wreck our day. Which one is more personal?
      Tl;dr, Proximity is more important than magnitude. TV Tropes "A million is a Statistic" and Dunbar's number.

    As tvtropes put it: Umbridge was hated because while most of us will likely never meet a Voldemort, everyone has met at least one Umbridge. In my case it was an HR at my previous job. Two more suggestions: Dennis Nedry and Donald Generro in Jurassic Park.
    But if we're treating all the dinosaurs across the entire franchise as the main villains, then I'd argue that the secondary human baddies in the last three Jurassic World films were increasingly more loathesome with each film, starting with Hoskins, moving on to the murderous Eli Mills (the first human villain in the franchise to intentionally kill another human, rather than recklessly cause their deaths), and finally the guy who started it all, Dodgson.

Yes he created Robocop, but he did so by intentionally putting cops in harm’s way and showing zero compassion for anyone. Unlike Boddicker, who’d gladly shoot you while facing you, Ferrer’s character would shake your hand and compliment you just before stabbing you in the back.

Also, in the book, Aragon and Denathor had the same amount of right to be the king. In fact, Denathor is the right king, as his family ruled that region for a long time. Aragon had no right to rule unless all of Denathor's family died. Aragon became king because of his charisma and role in saving Middle Earth. Also, Faramir gave up the role to Aragon, as Aragon seemed to be a better king. To me, I hated the mayor of Jaws and Jaws 2 so much especially because he got away with his vileness. The actress that played umbridge played her absolutely perfectly. And it speaks volumes when a character who appears in 2 movies is hated more than the main villain. Even myb7 year old niece hates umbridge more than Voldemort

    I remember when I saw Deathly Hallows part 2, the audience cheered louder for Molly killing Bellatrix Lestrange than Harry killing Voldemort.
