    Ratief Goosen shot a 10-under 62 that day, and nearly chased Tiger down (finished 24-under for the tournament to Tiger’s -25). Shows you what guys had to do back then to keep up with him.

    • @jonathanlynch8372
      @jonathanlynch8372 3 года назад +2

      Agreed. Everyone talks about the 2000 season but 2002 was the year he could have won the grand slam. Getting the brunt of a literal storm on day three of the Open effectively ended his chances and, with all due respect to Rich Beem, a journeyman having the week of his golfing life pipped him to the PGA. The Amex here was Woods in cruise control and still beating everyone. Absolutely confident of where the ball was going.

      Honestly I think it has far more to do the audio technology of today vs. ~20 years ago. Tiger basically plays the same irons, we are just usually hearing things in a lot more detail these days. I think there was a lot more saturation and compression on the audio back then which made things sound fatter and not as bright.

    He played really conservative this round, especially off the tee, and he kept the ball in play the whole time. I assume this is why he had one bogey the entire 72 holes, simply because he didn't get ahead of himself and play stupid. He managed his way to victory this tourney, and made the field come to him.

    Tiger Woods is the MJ of golf and Nicklaus is the Bill Russell, different eras, but clearly the best player is TW. Of all time? all time is not over yet, but for Now, there has not been nor ever will be, probably, another player to have the dominance of TW over a 10 year period (Or MJ) while increasing the fan base to what it is now. When Jack played, you had to be a wealthy white man to be in the game or come from money, there were no black players in college playing golf and certainly if Jack had to play against a field including black players he would not have won the way he did, many of them would out hit him, many of them would have been like TW actually, so golf is only what it is today because of TW and Nicklaus to a degree because he became the motivating factor for TW to dig in and excel.
