- Well, most of us are not big fans of ICOM's DPRS. So what to do. For $9.95, I got the ICOM cable (which the website does not say is compatible with the IC-705) from Mobilinkd, and it works flawlessly.
This short video shows how APRS (APRS Droid) works great with the ICOM IC-705 and would do Winlink (WOAD) and other Packet radio apps as well. Next video, I will test it out with a Windows computer using PinPoint APRS.
Please leave comments or questions below.
Here is a link to the Mobilinkd site (I get no money from them or RUclips). I am making these videos for the good of ham radio. www.mobilinkd.com/ Наука
Thank you!! 72
Thanks, this was helpful. I'm ordering the cable for my 705 now. I already have cables for my HTs.
Why can't you Bluetooth directly to the 705 and do this. Why do you need the TNC?
Hi Richard, the IC705 does not have built-in APRS capability. So you will need a TNC to do APRS and certain other FM data modes.
With use of software modem like UZ7HO (free) you need only simple USB-cable to run Winlink and packet. As an option you even can get rid of all cables at all and connect to your IC-705 using WiFi and vfview (free) software.
Thanks for the UZ7HO resource. I am definitely gonna check it out. Do you know of any videos out there on using that set up with windows or android. I have never had much luck using AX.25 in the past.
I'm in the process of learning about APRS, so this may be a dumb question. If the Icom 705 has built-in APRS, why do you need the Mobilinkd TNC? Isn't there a way to connect your laptop (wired/wireless/bluetooth) to the 705 to get the data feed? I do have a TNC4 that I'm playing around with connected to a handheld, but I thought it wouldn't be needed for connecting to something like the 705 with built-in APRS.
Hi Dave, not a dumb question at all. The 705 has DPRS, which only functions in a very limited way like APRS. DPRS does not interface with the APRS system other than maybe as a location beacon (no texting, email, weather, etc.).
@@K2PMD Thank you for the clarification!
Can you do winlink on HF with this?
Not sure. Since the 705 has a digi sound card in it, it works with Windows Winlink for HF. The 705 doesn't do FM APRS so using a TNC is necessary for that purpose. Let us know if you try the Winlink HF through a TNC with the 705.
hmm.... the fact that it charges by USB and the fact that the IC-705 can operate off USB 3.0 has a strange advantage in logistics in the field
Yes, absolutely. It really is a great product. The new TNC4 has a USB-C, so faster charging and more physically stable.
There is a replacement board mod now available for the IC-705 that replaces the Micro-B port for USB-C.
