One of the Most Confusing Things About Physical Silver

  • In this video I talk about silver and the most confusing thing about physical silver for new silver stackers. Silver is weighed in troy ounces and has been that way for a very long time. Troy ounces are different than regular or AVDP ounces. Troy ounces contain 31.1 grams and regular ounces contain 28.3 grams. It is assumed that all precious metals are weighed in try ounces even though they may just say Oz on them. Troy pounds contain 12 troy ounces and regular pounds contain 16 regular ounces. This is very confusing because some silver items are weighed in regular pounds and others are weighed in troy pounds. You should always confirm the weight of a large silver bar or round before you buy it especially if it is weighed in pounds.

    • @SuperDavidEF

The government has a vested interest in the "confusion" of money and currency. They WANT you to think that the fiat currency they produce (or have produced by a third party) is money. If they let commoners learn the difference, there might be trouble. That's why they also try to make people believe that inflation is normal, and a lack of inflation is abnormal. And especially if there is deflation that it's a BAD thing. If you know anything at all about money, you know that's the opposite of the truth.

      Troy ounce: 31.1 grams
      Troy pound: 12 troy ounces
      "normal" ounce: 28 grams
      "Normal" pound 16 "normal" ounces
The troy is always implied with the ounces, with the pounds sometimes it is a mix, as in the ounces are still troy as it is always implied but they might not use the correct troy pound when making a pound but mix them together and make a product made up of a "normal" pound that in turn is made up of troy ounces.
This is a actual summary of the video .

For me, it adds to the hobby. Then there's the foreign silver coins and jewelry with their own silver content percentages. Like the US junk silver, Brittain has a cut-off date for purity as well. I think the easiest way to clarify this is density. Once people understand the concept of density then will it make alot sense. Density is the amount of matter occupied in a substance/object. So just like he gave the example of what weighs more: the 1lb of feathers or the 1lb of silver? They both weigh the same but their densities are obviously going to differ. Its going to take alot of feathers to occupy that space to equal 1lb versus the 1lb of silver that will utilize much less space. I hope this helps.

Why are copper premiums so high?

I've never thought that this was confusing. Precious metals are always in troy oz., even when it just says oz.. Troy pounds are not used very often. Most larger bars or coins are 10 oz (troy oz.) or 1kg. The much larger ones are 100 or 1000 oz. or 10kg. I agree about not buying coins or bars in pounds or fractions of pounds. Though I have never come across any anyways.

Believe it or not, I learned this in 5th, 6th and 7th grade... 1966-1968.We learned this along with Roman numerals etc. Kids since have missed out on a lot of cool learning.

Wouldn’t a pound of silver and a pound of copper weigh the same? They both weigh one pound. It’s like saying a pound of rocks and a pound of feathers weigh differently

The most confusing thing to me is how a 1oz copper round is $1.50 when bright and shiny scrap copper is $4.10 per pound

Great job SD. The "Pound" thing is ridiculous. They have 5oz rounds, and 10oz rounds, why the weird Pound stuff. I? avoid it also.
I only have 1 piece that is 1 Pound of silver, but I bought that for $95 decades ago.

Literally almost did this when I first started stacking silver and was going to by a cast bar that was a “pound” I thought it was a good deal at first😂😂
