I started sharpening my larger knives with this same method a few years ago. It just works better for me than laying a stone down flat and trying to find the bevel that way. Being able to see that shadow disappear let's me know I'm on the bevel . I also use my belt as a strop. I really enjoy your videos, you don't waste a lot of time with things that either don't matter or aren't as critical and focus on the simple and efficient and effective method of whatever you might be discussing.
Thanks for the advice. I carry a Lansky puck for axe and knives rough sharpening then I use my small pocket hard black Arkansas stone to finish. Lansky puck is nice because it’s good for both tools and the pocket stone is small.
I sub-cheff at a small restaurant. Being so small, I don't really have much to do during those periods between breakfast and lunch. Or between lunch and dinner. Maybe a few stragglers having lunch at 4pm, maybe a couple buds getting beers after work or something. And during those times, every now and then I just grab a stool, sit down and give maintenance to the kitchen knives and even some of my own blades I bring from home. Nice and slow. It's really relaxing. It helps pass time and I get to keep my tools clean, handsome and sharp like the devil's tongue.
I don't know if you've updated your kit any regarding sharpening, but I love my DC4 and I keep a half (I cut it in half) scotchbright pad with it. That lets me get things like sap and other substances off my knife. I also use it to scrub my cup after tea.
I'll try your method with the same stones from somewhere. I do it in sections too as I can't do that swingy thing I see others do. But I still can't get my The Woodsman Knife sharp at all. I nailed my finger trying to make a wedge for my shingling hatchet I have started using to cut kindling for the wood stove (thinking of turning it into a bushcraft hatchet). It needs a new handle but they don't sell tool handles here in Yreka CA. Not sure who does in Medford OR.
Knife/axe sharpening.....my nightmare! I can take a sharp knife and a stone and dull it after minimal passes! I know, wrong angle and all that!! Fact remains, about the time I use a method that gets a blade kinda sharp, ALL blades thereafter stays dull! Hopefully, Dan, this will help! Thanks
+coalcracker bushcraft thought so question for you would you be interested in a new. pa bushcraft meet up with other pa guys or even out of state woods men
If you have something already set up let me know @ coalcrackerbushcraft@gmail.com. Otherwise I have something in that works for early spring 2017 here at my land Follow me on Facebook so you can hear when that one is happening.
I recently did a video on using my belt as a strop, so that is a great option. I carry these two stones because they have proved in my experience to give me the sharpest edge with the most ease of any other sharpening method. Thanks for watching
Okay, just to note, I have sharpened blades on car window edges and stones I have found in a creek. Granted, store bought stones are easier, but there are other ways. I respect your methods,
Im searching the comments, trying to find how you spell the name of that stone.. Googles asked me if i meant something else.. i absolutely did not mean that.. how do you spell N-word stone?

Appreciate your videos. Always to the point and easy to understand.
Those DC-4 stones are very nice. Can't beat the size and weight for what it can do. Great demo Dan.

My left ear enjoyed this video
I am lucky, I am watching it with only left headphone anyway :D
Mitch @Native Survival made a video last year showing how he uses a Nagura stone to polish his knife edge in the field, nice video.
I saw Mitch's video. I have always enjoyed the information he puts out.
Another great video mate. Good, practical advice at 8:40
Dan you the man! Great idea.

Anyone know what knife Dan was using for the sharpening lesson?
Nice... I'm going to try the negura stone... Any plans on doing a vid on making the tallow/beeswax?
Yes in the works. Should be out by mid next week
I believe that on the package of the dc 4 it says that the stone should not be wet or used with oil. Is it better to use water/oil?
I use the cc4 and it says the same thing.
I use mineral oil to coat my high carbon knife, but I might try to remember to use wax in the field, as that serves multiple purposes.
Is that stone a DC4 or a CC4? The only thing I have found that looks like yours is a cc4.

Yep..🙈
good stuff as always
The weird thing is that fällkniven who makes the dc4 clearly states no water or oil should be used with it

The audio seems to have disappeared on this presentation.
I just carry an Arkansas stone. I hone my blade on my leather belt, and I coat my blade with Chap-Stik. Why carry 2 stones?
