  • A film running through some of the stages in renovating an antique writing box. Some of these old boxes had secret compartments. Where they are tucked away and how they are opened is demonstrated. Everyone who sees one of these antiques is impressed with the originality, craftsmanship and ingenuity they possess. Jackdaw Boxes put the same care into restoring them.

I wonder what is being used to get that kind of finish ?

Why nail the opening ribbon tab tot he end of the compartment flap door instead of attaching it to the face of the flap door (by driving the end of the ribbon into a small slit cut into the wood face) and cutting a small slit in the leather and feeding it through (in the center towards the top and bottom of course)? It seems unnecessary to create new holes in the wood when one could use the same methods as the originals and have it completed in a much more finished and polished manner.

What the heck? We went thru the restoration with you only to be cheated at the end with a completely different and very ugly box.
I thought the glue job with the center veneer was very sloppy with glue residue all around. Never cleaned it up either. I thought I could learn something but feel like showing you my methods instead. You could have put painters tape around the center veneer so no glue on the box. Glue is a big deal. It soaks in and your finish does not 'take' on the glue smear.

I think it's down to personal preference as different people have various tastes.
If the box was already in a bad way and not worth much I think it's good to restore it to its former glory.
Personally I like restoration of boxes as I actually use them as a functional items and don't care about the value - it's pointless having a box that's worth lots of money but sitting in a cupboard somewhere as it's too damaged to use
To me that's like buying a very expensive watch say for example a Rolex but then keeping it in a glass cabinet to look at rather than wearing it and using it for its intended purpose - but each to their own
