I bet it had a totally unique and never to be seen again appeal to it. As amazing as it is now, back then was a different world. I have seen old videos of Portofino when I stayed there with my wife and it was amazing. Lake como has a special place in my heart though as the Monday after we arrived home in the UK we found out we were expecting our first children ❤️ our twins are now 7yo.
This is a beautiful video journey of Lago di Como. My wife and I have stayed in Varenna and Bellagio multiple times in the 20-teens. Varenna has a rail station which is convenient to disembark from the Milan train; from that station, you can stay in Varenna or take the ferries to Bellagio or any other destination on the lake. Varenna is very quiet during the day and absolutely magical at night. Food is matchless here and the hotels are pretty reasonable in cost. I noticed at the end of the video people getting off the ferry cross-lake in Menaggio. This is a pretty town for a half-day trip, and Lugano, Switzerland is a short bus trip away - although I was unable to arrange this. We also stayed in Bellagio for a number of days. I found a reasonable third-floor apartment here; I would avoid anything on the waterfront hotels except for some very fine bars for a cocktail-hour spritz. Bellagio has a number of very fine restaurants for any hour of the day; go up the steps to the top main street. Finally, it is worth taking a day to take the ferry all the way to the city of Como. The ferry stops at many small towns along the way, and Como has fine restaurants, bars, waterfront parks, and shops. For some reason, the travel press ignores the city of Como, which I found to be a great day-trip.

In the North of Italy, where Como is located, we aren't used to gestures like those you feature in your message. Northern Italy has pretty nothing to do and very little in common with the South .

Yes, it's the perfect time to go! Italy is best in the shoulder seasons of Spring/Fall. I would recommend visiting the lake first to relax and settle in before visiting Milan.

Italians love their dogs. You see them everywhere, in stores, restaurants, trains, etc. I would just make sure your lodging accommodates pets. I recommend checking AirBnB's for lodging (we found an excellent apartment with a lake view in Varenna). A great presentation but you are confusing centuries and hundreds. For instance, you said that the villa Monastera dated from the 11th century. However, its construction started in the 1,100s, which means it was in the 12th century. Likewise for other dates. Thanks.

It's a very easy train ride from Milan. However, a day trip would be hard in my opinion. I'd recommend staying at the lake at least one night.
I’d love to visit. But the world and Italy is in such turmoil now, I can’t imagine when things might normalize enough to make it thinkable.
