It is a big difference, especially when you listen with high quailty studio headphones. I am really impressed with the dbx286s, as it has a great (quiet) preamp and the processing is nice (with the exception that some of the processing is limited. Would make a good addtion as an outboarding effect to add to a mixer for a single spoken work/ vocal channel. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the walk-through. Very helpful. I have a dbx286s and Audacity. Since the dbx286s compresses the audio, do I need to use the compressor in Audacity as well?

The dbx is a good solution to add compression and the other effects in real-time, thus “baking” in the effects. So, in short you shouldn’t need to add compression in post. However, if you wanted and/ or wanting to add compression again, to knock down the transients a little more that would be a reason to add additional compression. But in short, the answer is no to us that use the dbx to go ahead and add effects in real-time, for livestreams, for example, and to avoid adding effects later. I trust this makes sense.

So which one do you prefer with your Rode Procaster: DBX 286x or the Rode Rodecaster Pro?

It depend on what I am looking to achieve. The dbx286s has a great preamp (can handle the Rodecaster & Shure SM7B dynamic microphones and gain them all the way up to 60 db of gain w/ out noise). The Rodecaster Pro on the other hand has decent preamps, but I would recommend a in-line preamp (like a Cloudlifter) otherwise it will introduce a lot of noise and hiss in the recording. The dbx for spoken word and an outboarding effect on a mixer works excellent. However, the Rodecaster Pro provides so many other features (like 4 channels, connecting your phone, bluetooth, build-in effects, programmable buttons, etc. Plus, what I really like about the Rodcaster Pro is that it simply "works." By that I mean you connect it directly to your computer and it acts as an audio interface as well, so you can bring it in to your computer with ease. With the dbx you have to add an audio interface into the signal chain in order to get it to your computer, for example. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Sounds clear with it on and not as much bass in your voice.
