Exactly . From the start I empathized with this character from the beginning but now.... He has just fully lost his mind and became an unlikeable asshole .
Or, the writers know that we already know that Barry won't kill a child, because they showed us that last season. But we also know that Gene doesn't know that about Barry, and thinks Barry is capable of any evil. Barry knows that about Gene and is exploiting it by bluffing that he will kill his family if he leaves him. Just because Barry says it, doesn't mean he'll actually do it. He's just taking advantage of Gene's fear.
Just because he wasn't willing to do it in the past when he felt like he was making progress, doesn't mean he's unwilling to do it in the present when he feels its the only way to make progress.
I think he's bluffing. Killing a kid would be too much for him, imo (at least premeditatedly, since he can always snap like he did at the end of season 2.)
I don’t think he’s going to kill a kid. Remember he wasn’t willing to kill Lilly and she very nearly slaughtered him. As crazy as he seems here, I don’t think he’s willing to cross that line and is just making an empty threat.

In a dark and fucked up way, sure. It's really revealing how out of touch Barry is with reality, showing this downward spiral into insanity throughout the season. Barry's two "lives" being so intertwined and mixed that he can no longer separate the two. He wants so much for things to work out that he's willing to murder a child just to keep this façade of a "normal" life intact. Barry is a psychopath. He’s a hitman so he has to be. We thought he was this sweet, friendly and innocent like person even when he was killing people. That charade is now crumbling. It’s a judgment against us the audience who root for people like Barry, Walter white, dexter, etc. Why do we fetish and be entertained over evil characters? Masterpiece and original writing
I wouldn't label him a psychopath because that brings a lot of connotation. Barry is someone who wants to be good, and wants to be seen as good, and so often has put on the mask of someone who is this nice, puppy dog eyed person. We are just now seeing that the mask is forced, and crumbles under pressure. I'm not sure if the intent is a judgement against people who root for people like Barry, that doesnt sound quite right to me.
