Oh the good old days of Les Miserables when it was awesome! Great sets. Great costumes. No over singing. No rushing through singing the songs. No edited songs. A full orchestra. No Eponine kissing Marius before she dies. No Valjean shouting Bring Him Home. No over acting. No corny choreography.
I’m so glad I got to see the original production many times before it all went wrong.
Thank you so much for posting this!!

NO RUSHING. Right? I'm glad Les Miz is still going strong, but omg the rushing in the new production. No moments to sit in the emotion, let alone processing all of the important narrative points.

So honoured to have been a part of this Toronto production as the head of the hair and make up department. Brought back many memories. Rest In Peace to those cast members who have gone home . Michael Burgess, Gorden McClaren, master of the house..🙏🏻😢❤️

Wow! I was going to comment how well the hair and makeup was done in this production! It was so very appropriate for the play takes place! Just right for every character! You should be so proud! Everything was so much more authentic than any production I’ve seen.

I remember this likei it was yesterday, I remember how much Gord loved, loved playing Javert. I may be basis, but I think he has one of the best Javert voices in the whole of the les miz universe :)

I was fortunate enough to see this at the Royal Alex in 89, 90 and 92. Always felt a bit disappointed that I missed out on seeing it in 91, so stumbling upon this is a real treat. It fills the gap a little bit. Even these short clips elicit the same emotions I felt each time I sat in the audience. Thank you for posting it.

@MiserablesMoments I did the Toronto production the year before (from January of 90 to the end of the first Toronto run) and after that, I was touring with the show. When this show was running, I THINK I was working with the Montreal company when they were on tour. It's been a while!

This was great... I went on a class trip in 1989 to see the show at the Royal Alex... our seats were at the top... I mean, you went up as many stairs as you could, then went into the seating area and climbed up some more stairs to get to the small section we sat in. But it was the most amazing show I've ever seen. Thank you for posting this. :) And thank you to everyone who has ever been part of the production of Les Mis over the years.

I have always been very curious about the original Canadian cast, especially after learning that a Les Mis commercial that aired during the 90's for the 3rd U.S. national tour featured scenes of this very cast. I was fortunate to have seen Susan Gilmour as Fantine in Los Angeles in 1991 when she joined the 1st national tour. Watching these clips of her brought back so many wonderful feelings and memories of seeing her phenomenal portrayal of Fantine. So passionate! One of the best ever Fantines.
The rest of this cast is just top-notch in every way. I don't think there's a single weak link here. Fantastic cast and I love that they added so many scenes to this press reel. I miss this version so much. The recent "updated" production that is now making the rounds worldwide simply doesn't measure up to the magic, direction, scale, and thrill of this definitive stage version! Saw it 30 times; all three U.S. national tours, the original Broadway and London productions.
Thank you for uploading this. As a HUGE fan of the original production, this was a real treat!

      @MiserablesMoments Saw the U.S. 1st NT in Feb. 1991.
      2nd U.S. NT in June 1989.
      3rd U.S. NT in Dec. 1992; Jan. 1994 (x2); Dec. 1995; Jan. 1996; Oct. 1999; Dec. 1999 (x2); Jan-Feb. 2000 (x5); Oct. 2001; Dec. 2004 (x2); June 2006 (x3).
      Original Broadway production in July 1997 (x2); June 2000 (x2); Aug. 2002; Jan. 2003.
2006 Broadway Revival in July 2007.
London production in Sep. 2010 (x2).
London was the very last time I saw the original and I'm NOT kidding when I say it was like seeing it for the first time. Les Mis has always had the odd effect of never getting old, familiar, or losing its magic. Every time that scrim went up at the beginning, I'd be in disbelief over how the show looks live in person as if I never seen it before. I mean, I know the sets, the lighting cues, the blocking , direction, orchestration, and costumes by heart but I am never prepared for the way it looks on stage in front of me. Hard to explain.
      I miss it sooooooooo much.

@@lamisere8337…. Everything you’ve said is exactly how I feel about Les Miserables. I too have seen the show over 30 times since 1989, between Boston, New York, London and Orlando. Nothing will beat the first 10 years of this show! The original staging, the lighting , the stage direction, the unedited score, the natural acting and singing. Just fantastic! It changed my life! The new staging is so amateurish, dull and over sung. Also, in one scene, not historical correct which angers me. When I found out that the original London staging was going to close down and the new staging was going to be brought in, I just had to travel to London to see it one finale time. I’m so glad I did! It brought back such wonderful memories and feels of seeing the show for the first time. And I got emotional at the end. I was sad that I will never see this staging again. I was sad that we have no professional video recording of this staging, I was sad that younger generations of theatre goers will never get to experience the magic of this fantastic production and will only have the new staging, the concert versions and the poor movie adaptation as point of reference. It’s wonderful that those of us who were into this show, along with so many others, before the internet, are able to have these clips show up for us to enjoy, relive and/or see for the first time. Especially anything with the original 1985 London cast!

@MiserablesMoments… I recognize your name! Lol! Okay, now to try to jog my memory! Lol! For the original staging, I saw Les Mis in Boston 4 times in 89. That was my first time seeing the show. I saw it in London in 1991. And then in NYC in 1992 when Debbie Gibson was playing Eponine. After that it’s a blur! All the others times it was either NYC or Boston when the tour came back. I did get to see the finale original Broadway version before it closed in 2003. And then saw the new Broadway cast when the show reopened a few years later. I think the last time I saw it in NYC was when Judy Kuhn was playing Fantine. And then that version closed. I moved to Florida and saw the 25th Anniversary new staging in Ft. Lauderdale when that staging started. I did see 2 regional productions. One in Massachusetts and one in Orlando Florida. And I saw it for the last time in London right before the original London production closed. I had to see it one more time with that staging! I’d have to look at my Playbills to get exact years after 1992. Lol!

@MiserablesMoments… Oh and the electric lamps hanging over the women’s work station in the new staging during At The End Of The Day angered me so much for its lack of research into the time period that I will not go see the show with the new staging again.
