  • George Enescu was the alchemist who turned his childhood experiences of raw beautiful folk music into exquisite internationally renowned composition. A teenager when France fell at his feet, this extraordinary 20th century Romanian composer lives on through the beauty of his music. Perhaps unsurprisingly, his life story reads like a novel: discover more about Enescu, Romania’s most celebrated musician, in Dr Tessa Dunlop’s 3rd episode of #WhoisRomania in association with the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, London Philharmonic Orchestra and George Enescu Festival.

Tessa, Thanks for bringing Romanian joy into our dreary, covid- ridden lives and for opening our eyes to the wonders of a country which so often receives ignorant, negative press

Romanians and the Roma people interacted with each other since they were living in the same country and it is quite possible that Enescu was influenced by the Roma people as well, however he was influenced mostly by the Romanian folklore music, you can see this in his works. A genre called Lautareasca music is heavily influenced by the Roma people and there are not many similarities between Lautareasca and the Romanian Rhapsody, his masterpiece, for example. The Romanian Rhapsody has influence from the Romanian folklore songs...

Hidden Romania. An amazing place. Amazing people. A quiet nation. Too bad Romanians can't take themselves out of this continuous, long shadow.

As a Romanian, I can say that the video is a wonderful tribute to one of our most celebrated composers. The clip does an excellent job of showcasing Enescu’s life and work, and I’m glad that it’s being shared with a wider audience.
I would like to thank you for creating such an informative and engaging topic. It’s always great to see people from other countries taking an interest in Romania’s cultural heritage.

To see Celibidache conducting Enescu’s Rapsodia Romana. That must’ve been a real feast. I really enjoyed your materials. When the story is nice and you have a good narrator, now that’s another feast.
Since we talk music perhaps Haricleea Darcle would be another lovely story.

They're called gypsies, calling them "romani" creates confusion.
