I was lucky enough to take my daughter to see Tommy Keene open for Matthew Sweet just a few months before Tommy's untimely passing. He was such a sweet and gifted guy, posed for a pic with my daughter. God bless Tommy Keene.
@Shannon I did as well, and I found out we lost him a few months after the fact but the show here must have been in the last month of his life; I was dumbstruck. I also saw Westerberg in Atlanta on tour years ago knowing Tommy Keene was playing with him, certainly around the time of this video - sure do like me some Westerberg but was mainly hoping Tommy might step out front with a few originals... Ah but it was a great show. Those were the only times that I know he came through town here... so sad. Both men stellar and remarkable talents.
Josh played with him during the 14 Songs tour as did David Minehan on guitar, both of whom played with Paul and Tommy during the Replacements reunion shows from 2013-2015. On that tour, Paul's manager/agent Darren Hill played bass (double duty.. lucky or unlucky?). For the Eventually tour, I believe Josh and Michael Bland (Prince) split drum duties, Tommy Keene (R.I.P.) played lead guitar, and Ken Justine played bass. During the Folker tour (Paul's last full tour with a backup band), he had Bland on drums, Jim Boquist (Son Volt) on bass, and Kevin Bowe on guitar. I saw them in San Francisco when Paul smashed a Gibson junior and a piece of it cut him behind his ear.
paul westerberg can musically do no wrong. every record he's ever put out is my absolute favourite. the replacements and all of their side projects/solo careers have had the biggest effect on my life..... i love this guy so much and not a day goes by where i dont listen to his stuff. his music makes this life worth living
Just an incredible performance, probably one of the best late-night show offerings ever. This song should have been a hit single, even in 1996, a year that the Goo Goo Dolls ended up with the 24th-ranked single on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Name," a tune that is thoroughly saturated with PW's influence.
@@michaelmiller7160 Tommy is great but I expected a little more of an outstanding guitar solo. "You've got 'em all on your wall/Except the last of a dying breed". That's Paul, never will be another like him.
So under appreciated is the story of Tommy Keene. Saw him plenty of times in the early days, since I live in Maryland, and plenty of times in the later days too.
@@sotampacane , Westerberg's influence on Nirvana is quite apparent. I forgot to mention Westerberg's influence on Wilco. Glad to see you're watching this video.
Not just Keene. Mitch Easter, Robyn Hitchcock, Scott Miller, Redd Kross, Jellyfish, hell even Alex Chilton, etc. And especially Westerberg. In a just world, these guys should have been huge instead of Mariah Carey, Bob Jovi, and Mr. Mister.
Great performance. I could watch them play all night. And they look great, too. Yeah, I loved this solo era of Paul's. One of my all time great rock n roll heroes. He was just the best.
Thanks for posting. Had seen this before a few years ago but couldn't pull up again for a while until now. One of my favorite late night show performances. Love how Tommy Keene is grinning ear to ear at the end of the song knowing they nailed it.
Way better than the album version... This has a nasty polished grit to it... amazing sound... wish more of his solo "rock" songs had this kind of eloquent chunky grime... I really love a lot of his folk stuff though.... "Stereo" is amazing!
Oppodouche, fuck right off yourself. Tommy is dead so fuck you and your asshole comment. Westerberg is fucking great, and Tommy Keene is fucking great, and the combo is even better.
Best song on Eventually done even better. Saw Paul on the 14 Songs tour just before this and he was up & on the whole night. Played 10 songs from album and 15 Replacements songs. Finally ended with "Answering Machine" his voice in shreds. Who was he singing this to? Winona? Hopefully, Courtney Love.
I was never the biggest fan of this song, I always found some of the "rockers" on Eventually to be the weaker part of the album. But I agree with others who say this live performance sounds much better and gives the song more life. But, I have to say that the section at 2:42 always impressed me. A really clever addition to the song that takes you by surprise. Also, Tommy Keene's playing in general is great as always.
Jeez -I had no idea Jay had any musical inclination at all -the dude surprises me a lot. I dont know who those Beetle looking dudes backing Paul were though.
I love how fucking cool Paul looks giving Jay a firm hand shake with a guitar pick hanging out of his mouth lol Also, am I the only one who thinks his bassist looks like a thinner Bob Stinson 😯
you got it ass backwards. PW could've picked anyone but he picked Tommy for obvious reasons. Not selling a ton of albums does'nt make you second tier. How you get better musically is playing w people who are better than you.

I saw them too at The Casbah in San Diego.

I was Lucky enough to Meet Tommy Keene. RIP🎸💔🎼🎵🎶
Josh Freese's drumming is always fun to watch.
Josh Freese is just simply awesome, as is the rest of the band. This was certainly Paul's peak when he was performing live on a regular basis.
Was this the same lineup for Paul's 14 Songs tour?

The Goo Dolls were like The Monkees next to The Replacements as The Beatles.
@@rickbort7875 The Goo love is just all wrong. The Replacements were top 10 and Goo wouldn't make my top 1000.

R.I.P to the great Tommy Keene!
Westerberg is such a cool cat. He has swagger and is clearly a clever fellow. He is simultaneously insightful, witty and humane. Great performance.
boris4626 and they dress nice
Definitely the coolest!
Is that you Paul?
Can anybody say BACKING VOCALS ARE GENIUS!!!! And Guitars are stunning?
They have all the instruments and vocals perfectly mixed. Brilliant. Paul always uses terrific performers.

"Highly influential" indeed. If it weren't for The Replacements, there would have been no Green Day nor Nirvana. Anyone watching this in 2019?

Westerberg is a God!!!!
96 was a bad ass year! I was a junior in high school. Acid, weed, and alcohol made up my weekends.
And the year I was born!
Bear of a chord progression. Three-part bridge. Good luck playing this at home, kids.
plus the open tunings he plays, so difficult to figure out......
Eventually is a killer disc. One of the Great American songwriters-he is up there with Lennon & Mac in my book.
The Beatles are the most legendary American rock band

Coolest guy ever Tommy Keene being too damn cool here. And gone far too soon.
Agreed. Looks like he's wearing an early Beatles suit.

Superb in every respect, and that includes the film and sound crew on this. What a performance AND production !
