- Join Photographers Joe McNally and Daniel Norton for the 3rd in a series of character portrait studies. Character portraiture is not just about finding interesting subjects, but creating light that hi-lights the subject in such a way to emphasize what it is we as photographer’s see in them. In the case of Ingeborg, They decided to use a very glamorous style of lighting to create an “All American” classic glamour look. Using clamshell lighting to bring out the glamour “pop” and a unusual placement of a V-flat to create a beautiful gradient background.

I especially enjoy the idea of videos that include humor, mistakes, problems, and fun. You two do all of those, which makes it much more pleasant to watch (for me) than a "serious" tutorial. Thanks, Joe Daniel, and the rest of the team!
Loving this mini series of character portrait episodes with Daniel and Joe. You can tell they are good friends and enjoy working together. Please keep them coming!!
great teamwork, well done !! ... I`m always thrilled when I see the results of Joe McNally`s shootings and set-ups ... and it always looks like it is all very easy
The use of the V-flat on the floor with the flash to produce a gradation of light on the background is inspired! Great effect, well worth trying, thanks guys.
Bob DotS yes, that one is in my permanent catalog now.
Just watching Joe at work is amazing. Would love to see Joe doing a real (non produced) shoot... A real behind the scenes story....
That strobe under the V-flat is awesome & gives a kind of graduated filter effect to the back drop.... I'll be experimenting with that next shoot.
Great stuff. Two favourite photographers of mine nail it again. And my god, she is incredibly gorgeous.
Thank GOD FOR SOME GOOD OLD FASHION PRO PHOTOGRAPHERS
Another great video- enjoyed watching it! Thanks
Awesome video. Love the light in the background.
I find this format really entertaining. I like your vids, but together there is a synergy that I think works well.
Well there’s an education in portrait lighting right there in those three videos.
Great work guys :)
This series is great!
I found it interesting that when you started with the mature subjects the lighting was simpler but still achieved great results. But when you got to the younger subject you had to work more on the lighting concept.
I love the first blue dress photos. Do it again with a a pale yellow background
You guys are as additive as NETFLIX..👍
Awesome never miss your tips
Joe and Daniel make a great team
Daniel, using the clamshell lighting setup do you want your lighting ratio the same for both lights or do you want the top light to be a stop brighter than the bottom light?
Typically you start about a stop down, then dial it up to taste
Great video.
sir you are great
Nice job guys!
good insights. thanks.
What are the b flats of flaps they refer too? Thanks awesome video.
Thomas Cahill - the v-flats are just the big folding pieces of foamboard that they are using to control the light, white to reflect light, black to absorb it.
Please Tell me what type of stand you are using for your fill flash in front of the subject. I need to order one.
Actually watching again, it's just a C-stand with Arm and a 650 pin - www.adorama.com/mt756140.html and www.adorama.com/aee650.html
Thanks for your answer, I ordered the stuff yesterday.
what lens? 105?
Name of song please
She needs a hat.
FIRST!
Good grief not much learning except how to talk around what you did to get the shot. Oh well worth what it cost I guess.
