Hempcrete Extension E22: Shuttering the Walls

  • Shuttering is like the jelly mould, if hempcrete were jelly. Hempcrete isn't jelly, so this is some carefully placed boards that define the final shape of the wall. The shuttering is designed so that hempcrete can be hand-placed behind it, so that it can be handled by one person working alone in a covid pandemic, and so that it is re-usable and environmentally sound. This is where I build the walls of the entire structure in a single episode against a backdrop of injury, death, foul weather, and global pestilence. If that sounds like fun (you pervert) then this is the episode for you!

You do such a great job with the oration of your work. I’m a disabled former carpenter/general construction laborer, and I geek out on these building videos, and there is a general contractor called Hempitecrure. I watched a video of a build that was going on in Texas, and the walls looked terrific, but they moved in 2-foot sections tamping down the edges with a stick and a 2 x 2 head on the end of the post approximately 8 to 12 inches long. The process was not too different from yours, except they didn’t use any PVC pipes that you then had to fill after you took those out. Then the real kicker that may make you want to pull your eyebrows out is they were not waiting a day or two in between their progression up the wall. They just took those extra-long lag screws with a washer on them, so it held the OSB more securely and stepped up the wall within minutes of finishing their hempcrete installation. I wish I could link the video, and it could benefit you moving forward if you have any other renovation plans with this material.

Hi Evan - thanks for your response, and I'm glad you're getting something from the vids.
Yes, you can use a tamping stick. The people i consulted with to do the project, Uk Hempcrete, weren't into using them because people tend to over-compress the hempcrete when they can't feel it with their hand. As I understand it there's a balance: if you over-compress it costs more materials, isn't as insulative, but is very strong, if you under-compress, it's weak, but insulates better. Can use a stick if u know how much pressure to apply, and there's the advantage of not having to be so careful about sharps in the cavity that can cut your hand.
With the shuttering i guess u can make a decision about how accurate to be, with the plastic spacers u can get it bang on, but u could get it roughly on, and true it up with the plaster. I wonder if they're using more heavily compressed hempcrete to push the shutters out as they're not held out on spacers? I'll take a look. They might just be very experienced at shuttering.
You can go up as many courses in a day as you want, as long as you keep them all shuttered, the limiting factor was there only being one of me. What you can't do is take a shutter off below and reuse it on top until the hempcrete has had a day to take its hydralic set - it would all fall out the bottom. I'll keep my eyebrows for now... there's been plenty of other reasons to lose them!
      Thanks

The top of the wall takes us a long time, because you cant turn Your bucket anymore, because of the roof. Do you have any tips?

Yeah, it's tricky. What I was told was just to try, in the design stage, to make the walls fill-able from above. But that's not always possible.
