  • The Army Ordnance Corps took part again this summer in Exercise EUROPEAN GUARDIAN.
The aim of the exercise is to give participants the chance to use and develop their manual neutralisation skills in a highly demanding, multinational environment. Over the two-week exercise, participants were given a series of different and increasingly complex scenarios and devices to deal with.
As an active participant of the European Defence Agency, the Irish Defence Forces collaborates with many other member states in a number of areas including joint training and military exercises. The European Center for Manual Neutralisation Capabilities (ECMAN) is one such collaboration. The Irish Army are one of eight (😎 annual participants involved in the project since its inception.
Each year they run international Manual Neutralisation Training which involves operators from each participating country. The nature of these training activities is focused on developing and enhancing the skills needed to neutralise complex devices in dangerous situations. Currently a wide range of courses are available, preparing the attendants in the basic MNT skills as well as for specific complex situations, such as those involving, CBRN material, Vehicle Borne IED (VBIED) and hostages amongst others, from initial qualification to advanced continuance training.

Try and do a course during Transition year. That will give you a taste of the life.

Join a hierarchical organisation such as the Scouts and learn leadership and field skills. When you're old enough, join the Reserve Defence Forces and see how you enjoy the tasks and duties. If you do, see about enlisting as a permanent member, or as an Officer Cadet.
