My grandmother never got to go to prom because her parents literally hated her (they said that they wished she had never been born). My grandma had three sons, so she never got to help a girl shop for the perfect dress. She has three granddaughters, now, and I'm the oldest. When it was time for my junior prom, I asked what color she would have wanted to wear for her own prom if she could have gone. She said blue, so I wore a blue dress to honor her.
That's a very sweet way to honor her. I bet your grandma was beaming with joy!

I am 51 and still have my prom dress but no daughter. I did get a lot of use out of the dress though. As it is a ballgown style that was popular in 1984, I wore it to the prom and , at the same time, was wearing it onstage as Mrs. Darling in "Peter Pan" with a local kid's theater group. A few years later I wore it onstage for two different operettas. One with the sleeves and one without. I also have rented it out once for an opera.

Nancy Kraus I went to prom in 1984 too. I wore a high-neck lavender dress with lots of lace. Maybe you'll have a granddaughter one day & can pass it on to her. I'm glad that you have been able to use it throughout the years though.
What do you think of some of the styles that they have out today? I don't believe that a short dress would have ever been allowed where I'm from, during that time. And, definitely nothing too provocative. We had to have a shawl if a strapless or spaghetti strap dress was worn, as well as slits were only allowed to right at the top of the knee. Times have changed.

My Mom saved her wedding dress in case she had a daughter(me), and when my senior ball came up, I wore that. It was a pale pink dress that had a vintage look to it.

I still have mine from my prom in 2006. I'm really into vintage fashion, especially from the 1910s/1920s. After a weekend of searching every prom store, I nailed a jackpot gown of turquoise silk and tulle, spaghetti-strap, with 1920s-style pinstripe gold, silver, and crystal bead-work that went all the way down to the hem. All I would have needed was a backward necklace, my grandma said, and I would have looked like I'd just stepped out of 1921.
I was blessed with a very headstrong daughter who even at just 6 years old has her own sense of style, but should she decide to wear that gown one day, I'd be very touched. Besides, she looks better in blue than I ever did. She has my brown eyes but there are hints of blue in her eye color thanks to her dad's blue-green eyes, so she beautifully pulls off any shade of blue she wears.

My Aunt passed away last year and she had this corral dress that she wore to a dance when she had been in high school. even though I had already rented a prom dress she suddenly passed and so I honored her at my senior prom with her old dress

Most of the time, girls use blast from the past prom dresses because they aren't rich, and can't afford the pricy dresses today. I thought this video was really sweet and let people know you don't have to spend a lot of money to achieve beauty.
I wore my gran‘s handmade silk cocktail dress from the 1950‘s like my mum for my school graduation. Gran was so proud and organised matching shoes in that soft turquoise colour made with satin. Unfortunately I have no daughter or child to pass this dress on but I am very thankful for her. It is a very special moment and really bonding experience for a family. ❤️

I had my own dress for prom, and I still love it. It's simple and elegant with just the right amount of shimmer to not make it boring. But I've been in love with my grandmother's wedding dress since I was a little girl, and what she doesn't know is that I plan on wearing it down the aisle in the future

If I looked as good as those girls ( and their mums & grandmothers) I would be wearing dresses too. There is possibly a bit of backlash too about the quality of present day gowns versus cost. All for one night. They all looked gorgeous as they had updated the dresses to look completely contemporary- the key to vintage - so it looks chic and not dress up. thank you for the trip down memory lane......

Just saying, i really think we need to try and keep prom formal but with a little party glam look allowed. I think cat suits and just shirts and trousers is fine, but if 'trends' like the usual ones keep happening, girls will be wearing crop tops and mini skirts alongside dresses made from gallium and alike substances. I am not against people displaying their personal style, i just believe it should be formally shown. Also there should be formal prom and party prom so we can have strappy sexy and mini dresses at the party one but the formal should be kept traditional.

The dress at 5:00 is very similar to my room dress. Mine also was red, had a strap around the neck, had the sweetheart shaped top, and the jewel thing in the middle of the top. Mine was also a high low dress too.

In Italy generally not as well although some schools gave a “graduation” formal dance. Some university departments have a formal dance once in a while but not as elaborate as proms in America.
