Over the years, I've missed three DragonCon because of IRL, but have otherwise attended since 2003. The short answer is, absolutely it's worth the hype. No doubt or hesitation on that answer. Some of the stuff mentioned near the end of this video; people having a bad day, people that need to shower a lot more frequently. These are, of course, things that can happen anywhere. They will not ruin your extended weekend at our con. I say that as both a long-time attendee of DragonCon, but also as someone who has helped run the con. Yes, DragonCon is the big party con, and it goes nearly non-stop these days from some point on Wednesday, all the way to Monday evening. The descriptions in the video are accurate. In some ways, DragonCon fairly is several smaller cons, under several very large roofs. It more or less takes over downtown Atlanta when it arrives. Some of the assimilation is nearby businesses that go con-style to get people in to spend, be it eateries or other stores. Some become sheer necessity, such as the local CVS, that stocks up on nearly military scale before the con starts. DragonCon really is its own animal, its own organism. It's fun to get down a day or so early before the events officially start. When you're seeing stuff getting moved around and set up. Watching Peachtree Center become a hive of activity and preparation. There's a palpable sense of buildup before the convention officially starts...it's a vibe and synergy and keeps drawing many of us back, year after year. DragonCon truly is special. Some like to call it Nerdi Gras, sorry circus people; I call it the truly greatest show on Earth. Some people have compared it to annual therapy. I recall an ATL radio DJ that once said if a warm fuzzy feeling stays with you for months after an event- than that's when you know it was for real. I don't recall the original context of that remark, but that's exactly what DragonCon is. One simply does not go to DragonCon just once /Boromirmode
Last Dragoncon I remember leaving a the rooftop party at like 3am, get down to the bottom floor and their a floopy Trex dance party going on near the entrance to the hotel, at three in the morning lol.
Edward James Olmos put it perfectly. ComiCon is where I go to promote my shows. DragonCon is where I go to hang out with fans. He stated DragonCon is more intimate and fan driven whereas ComiCon is more corporate driven. Side note: ComiCon came to DragonCon to learn about silos. FYI I’ve been going since the 1st DragonCon, so I have stories.
Well said. I went for the first time in 2011 and fell in love. My people! 🤓💕 I talked to a guy who said he reports on several big cons and, like you, he explained to me how Comic Con is about the big celebrities and DragonCon is about the fans. I love DC for the fan focus and large umbrella of themes. I went again in 2016 and the increase in attendance was huge! I preferred it a bit less crowded but still super fun. I know someone who used to work security detail there and he said whatever they report for attendance is likely a huge underestimate. Given the size I can hardly believe I ran into people I knew from my teeny tiny hometown sci-fi con both times. Well worth the hype if you can afford to go and are lucky enough to snag a hotel the year before. In 2016 I had the good fortune of getting a room at Hotel Indigo (smaller, perfectly centrally located, along the parade route) at non-DC regular rates because the hotel was new and hadn't even opened yet and I don't think they realized the con was a thing. I can't imagine what they are charging now.
The answer is yes the hype is definitely they are trust me I've been to several Dragon cons I really thought it was overhyped at first but no it is hype for real and it gets more crowded every year. DragonCon is a fan orgasm expo fun time event It is so cool honestly. It is a big nerd party You are having fun in costumes and your partying for damn near 6 days straight. So if you don't really like crowds if you're really nervous with people don't go but understand you going to party You going to have some fun
Yes the hype is real and it gets a lot more real after Comiccon in July.Love your videos. As someone who is hitting his 10-year Dragoncon anniversary, I even learn new things. It was cool to bump into at the Hyatt last year, hope to sit down one day have a cup of coffee while at Dragoncon and talk Dragoncon, lol! Keep up the Great work it is appreciated!!
Definitely Definitely worth the hype. Been going since 2011 and only missed one year in between. I will say it does get overwhelming and I have had to back out of the crowd due to anxiety. After 8 in the Marriott it's literally elbow to elbow.
This will be our 17th DragonCon so obviously we love it. But everything needs some criticism and if I had one it is that the con listened to the folks whining about the crowds a bit too much and spread the con footprint out a bit too far. I When I started it was 3 hotels and I think it could have been kept at 4 with maybe one AM building for gaming. don't think they needed to add all the Americas Mart Buildings nor the Westin. It just makes it a pain in the ass to get from A to B sometimes.
I missed it last yeae trying to get there while making a three year anniversary dance video for it . 😂 the only thing I hate is that some of the raves start so late i figure it best to go to the day time raves . And other concerts they have in between them.
Im pretty sure i saw you there last year. If i see u again im gonna say hi and that im the guy that commented on ur RUclips video to see if u remember me 😂
This is great advice! Thank you for showing DragonCon some love!
Definitely agree with all that was said. I can't go probably for a few more years now and gotta save money but I'll go back someday. Love D*Con!

Have you ever done a live stream at the con? I’d watch a video about best practices and what platforms have the best success
@@sechlerm the reception around that area with so many people would make a live stream very challenging 😅
