It's obvious. Silicon Valley doesnt get thrown free money at them anymore. They are confronted with the pressure of actually earning money. So, they make some fast decisions, which are sometimes smart and sometimes not.
However this will end for Unity, companies and small developers will think twice to ise their products, as they don't know what "license tweak" Unity will perform next. The risk of vendor lock-in becomes more obvios. FOSS and donating to FOSS is the way.
Absolutely, they pull this "retroactive" move once, they will pull it again. My relationship with Unity is OVER.
Godot here I come !!!
Thanks for the concise yet well informed view on the Unity drama. I've always thought of Unity as fair players till now, it's shocking to see them pitch such a badly thought out policy, I wonder if this is some strategy dreamed up by an expensive consultancy promising to make Unity ripe for purchase on the markets?
There are some theories talking about what you have brought up here, which is the lowering of Unity's value as a company before another fish eats it.
The current CEO of Unity however, have had a history of destruction wherever he goes, I have send the data to you in private :D
The damage is done now. Whether they stick with the policy or backstack completely, rhey cant expect the developers and the comminity to just let it slide. Theyve lost trust and it'll take a long time to get it back.
I cannot imagine feeling "safe" with them anymore, what they did here is very unsettling.
This "retroactive" move makes me feel they might/will do it again.
I cannot ever imagine feeling safe making games using this engine again, I am moving on from Unity and will never look back.
Definitely not legal, no corporation or individual can legally pull that one off. Shame and I really liked unity, ow well there goes another one...
What game engines are you looking into now James ?
very good and concise summary of the unity situation, +1
Thank you Mokalux, what engine are you currently playing with ?
@@BracerJack The only engine I really tried was Godot (from v1.1, gave up at v3.1). Now I am using a framework called Gideros 🙂 and I am very happy with it (been using it for almost 5 years now)
