In my book, Bodo Illgner was one of the best goalkeepers I've seen - my world's Top 5 of all time besides Dassayev (USSR), Schmeichel (Denmark), Kahn (Germany) & one other.. He probably has the best/longest acrobatic reach among top class goalkeepers...
I still remember one name at WC 82 : Bernd Franke, the backup for Schumacher and Eike Immel in that order. I never saw him, but from what I have read, if not for injuries, he could have become 1st choice in late 70s as the successor of Sepp Maier.
I've played in goal my whole life, and in my opinion Germany has always produced world class goalkeepers. Ilgner, Kopke, Immel, Neuer, Schumacher, Maier, Kahn, Ter Stegen....all fantastic keepers who combined unbelievable shot stopping agility with the ability to carry out the 'bread & butter' side of goalkeeping (taking back passes, catching, crosses, ball handling) with near-100% accuracy. It's no good being a fancy shot stopper if you can't do the basics reliably.
Thanks for mentioning Eike Immel. He had been waiting for long time to become 1st choice for Germany since early 80s. But it's very hard to beat Schumacher for that position.

Amazing and victorious goalkeeper, Schumacher's heir since Köln. But I believe that Andreas Köpke deserved the position both in 90 and 94 where he was at his peak of technique and physical form. However, Illgner was taller and younger. Fortunely, Beckenbauer's trust in the young man worked out.
Prior to WC 90, there was still Eike Immel. Sadly, he retired for Germany NT at quite young age after Euro 88. If he didn't retire then, he had chance to be still the 1st option for Germany at WC 90 like at Euro 88. Bodo Ilgner was the reason for his decision to retire after seeing tough competition between them; however he admitted that his decision was hasty.

Khan always in the losing side when it comes to high profile games. Beside if he was that good why he had to wait for kopke to retired in 1998 , so he can become germany #1 goalkeeper.
