- Bald Eagles are well equipped to live in cold climates. The species is the most populous in Alaska
Spirit is 49 days old and has developed a lot of upper contour feathers that allowed him/her to stay dry. The thick thermal down allows him/her to thermoregulate and stay warm even in sub-freezing temperatures.
Nevertheless, Jackie being the super Mom she is, protected Spirit overnight, covering him/her from the elements.😊
Preening gland (uropygial gland) is located at the base of the tail, on the lower back, just in front of the tail feathers. It secretes a thick, transparent, complex oil (preening oil) consisting primarily of diester waxes (uropygiols), fats and fatty acids. It performs many functions in the bird including water proofing, and keeping the skin, feathers and beak supple; the oil is said by some to have an antibacterial function. During preening, an eagle transfers this oil to its feathers by rubbing its head and beak against the oil gland and then spreading the oil over the feathers on the rest of the body.

Jackie really is a super Mom! She did an awesome job providing as much shelter and warmth as possible. It was so sweet seeing her lay her head on Spirit’s back ❤️🦅
I didn't think there was anything more touching than watching Shadow with Spirit, but when Jackie laid her head on Spirit's back, my heart melted. She is so fierce and protective. And wonderful.

Spirit was so uncomfortable and poor Jackie was trying so hard to provide shelter. It wasn't easy, especially when Spirit spread those wings in her face. But the moment she laid her head on his back, oh my, that was so sweet. Spirit tasting the snow at dawn was so cute. It was like he/she had never seen snow before but we know that isn't true. Perhaps he/she is now of an age to really recognize it. Thanks for a wonderful video, Cali, that was quite a night.

Supermom Jackie! She is just amazing!! Spirit did so well with Jackie's protection. When she lays her head and beak over Spirit to protect her/him is just heart wrenching! At daybreak (6:00) Jackie looks exhausted and some of her breast feathers look ragged from the ordeal. So glad I didn't see this live! I would have been too nervous to sleep all night! That wind and hail was vicious! Jackie and Shadow know what they're doing when they pick a tree and build a nest! Watching these eagles is so amazing, such a privilege. Thank you Cali Condor for all these windows into the private lives of these amazing birds of prey!!🦅🦅🐦

Jackie is a wonderful mom. Her instincts are amazing! When the wind gusts were at their worst she laid her head and neck flat on Spirit's back pressing him down closer into the nest and giving her an aerodynamic shape to help keep her pushed down with him. Her wings were getting lift from the wind and she left them up slightly to let the wind go over and through to keep from getting blown from the nest. I believe Spirit may have been blown from the nest in the high gusts...the whole tree was swaying and the wind and rain were coming in sideways. Super Mom Jackie kept sweet Spirit safe.

This snow in April at Big 🐻!!!
I thought all California state has a mild climate. I was so happy when they survived the last snow storm about a month ago. And here it is again.
Might have been sleet which is kinda midway between ice and snow. If we were to stand in it bare-armed in those high winds, it would sting.
This is Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino mountains in southern California, elevation about 6800 feet (2073 meters). It's common to see snow (and snow pellets and freezing rain) in April and May due to it's elevation. California has the most diverse climate of all 50 states. This is a video l had not seen before even though it is over a year ago. Poor Mom, seems like she had to lay her head on Spirits back to keep her balance since she is standing up to provide as much protection as she can. I always wondered why when the babies get to big to actually brood, the parent doesn’t lay next to their baby and cover them with a wing when protection is needed. @calicondor

At what age do young eagles learn to fly?
Bald eagles in California will fledge around 12 weeks. Then over the following few months the parents will teach it to fly and hunt.
