As an adult undergraduate at Cornell University, I can attest to the validity of the main points and messaging communicated in this lecture. I have one year left but am walking away because it’s not worth the price to stay another year when a large majority of the students and faculty lack very basic critical thinking skills. It’s been a mind-blowing and disheartening revelation.

In my opinion, the higher education industry is suffering a malady similar to the subprime mortgage crisis, driven by unaccountable/cheap credits (debts) pushed to borrowers who can’t really benefit from the investment in the long run. The result is inflationary price for everyone, including those who really care about learning and thus would have benefited from the investment in their education if the price were not so inflated.

      @@DAWN001 💯 excellent analogy
I’d almost say it’s gone beyond the point of benefit though, even for the people who really care. Because I was one of those people and I was on maximum financial aid. I still had to take out $4k-$7k/yr in student loans to cover the *relatively* small amount they don’t cover, but even that is not worth it to learn there is nothing special about the actual education provided. Potentially it’s worse than even that, because 18yr old kids are less likely to understand how curated and lacking the content is. If not for my age/life experience, I wouldn’t have realized it.

@@Goopycantaloupe My son is also attending college, and the number of faculty who suck at their job plus the number of students who buy homework answers from profiteering websites are both signs that even “accredited” universities are turning into diploma mills. Students are often treated as revenue generating units and programs that have large enrollment are called “cash cows”. I have worked in several universities until recently I quit for not seeing any values added by my work. I have realized many universities are no longer the promised land of learning and research in pursuit of truth. They are not even in pursuit of honest tuition money. It’s mostly about seeking government funding either directly or through students. I think new models of higher learning must be designed and developed to challenge the current system.

The best learning I ever did was with my butt planted in a hard oak chair, looking up at a chalkboard, with a book, pencil, pen, paper, and a learned badass with high expectations in front of me. "AV" was an overhead projector and it was more than enough. 7-9 pages of notes per class was standard and I loved the challenge. Didnt have time for the health center. Did pushups and pullups in my room during homework.

As a Catholic high school teacher, I worked way harder than these college professors. The principal insisted on accurate grades. He did not like seeing a lot of A’s. It seems weird that demands were higher in high school than in college. A sorry sham for students.

Accreditation agencies for higher Ed measure retention rates and graduation rates in the institution’s evaluation. THese metrics are published and affect the institution’s national rankings. Faculty are pressured to keep this in mind when assigning grades. I am tenured faculty so I am not motivated by these pressures but adjuncts and non-tenured faculty are. I teach in the physical sciences. My department graduates less than 50% of the incoming freshman who major in my subject. Typically students change to easier majors after their freshman or sophomore years.
After many decades in higher ed. I have seen the increase in administrators. Administrators are paid significantly more than full time faculty. In addition, the government requires institutions provide more and more services to students. Both of these contribute significantly to the cost of higher education.

What about women in academia? It seems like universities now are some of the most feminine places imaginable.

You mention higher education as a consumption good and then mention things like beautiful buildings or fitness centres, these are important but it's also important to point out that education itself can be a consumption good

Higher education is meant for a particular level in society and not designed for the entire society
The lower classes are meant for trade school, factory and general labor.
The middle and upper middle classes of course produce the intelligentsia.

No substitute for reading paper on a page?? Seriously??? What difference does it make if it’s a paper book, computer, video, chalk board, etc…? Learning is learning, and most of the stuff yall teach in college doesn’t apply to an objective synthesis. War Eagle
