“You guys probably don’t have an aluminum flat bar laying around” Me: is it bad that I have an aluminum flat bar laying around? Love the new series Michael, especially love the samples that you brought on this show
Many different materials make satisfactory bike frames. 4130 AQ structural tubing is used in some higher performance frames. Best and worst depends on the bike design and budget.
6061 is standard fare when it comes to Aluminum. I would just make sure to clean your frame every one and a while with a damp cloth that isn't abrasive so you won't scratch the surface. I hope you enjoy your bike. I love riding!
H tempers are cold worked to increase strength. The 3 indicates cold work plus a stabilizing low temperature heat treatment after cold work. The 2 is the relative strength where 8 is the maximum. The 1 indicates that the amount of cold work was slightly less than for H32. Applicable to alloys with 4% Mg in their composition.
7075 can be punch or worked in a press but you are not really supposed to because rough surfaces can cause cracks. We run jobs that are 7075 but the parts only go through 1 cycle so I can get away with punching the holes and countersinking and tapping them on our vipros 568.
Wrought Aluminum is created when you take pure Aluminum and combine it with other alloying elements to create a new "grade" of Aluminum. Does that help?
This alloy doesn't exist in distribution. There would be a mill minimum here to the best of my knowledge. I haven't seen it in the wild in all my years of buying/selling.
Without any more specific questions it's hard to "expand" on a general request let's say. I want to answer your question and I believe I can try to help :) Just need what other specifics you might require, however please do keep in mind, Michlin doesn't really work w/many coatings let's say so it's not something I really deal with on a daily basis.
Hi Michael, i'm currently building a race motorbike, planning on building my own alloy frame. Do you have any suggestion on what aluminum series i should use and the treatment that comes with it? Thanks ✌🏻
Fabricating aluminum for a frame is difficult. You may want to consult a shop that does frames for bikes, aircraft, hang gliders etc Motor sports often use 4130 tubing for frames and structural components as it is typically stronger and stiffer. (also Michlin takes no responsability for any statements provided based on results obtained, solely use for information only)
The video before this one explains the different tempers and on the website below, there's a description at the bottom of the transcript that might suffice. If that fails, let me know and I will get you a better explanation: www.michlinmetals.com/introduction-to-aluminum-the-heat-treated-tempers-7075-t7351-6061-t6-2024-t351/
I love aluminium products, it's lustre and shine are beautiful! I was looking out for an aluminium watering can, but could only find plastic and steel. Some aluminium alloys are very tough. Recycling aluminium takes 20 times less energy then turning bauxite into new metal. Aluminium, copper, lead and stainless steel are my favourite metals and alloys. Aluminium is light strong and does not rust, they should make all cars out of it, or stainless steel. I don't know why some metal items rust when you could easily make it last for ever and a day! Steel is relatively cheep. If I ever buy a car, it's going to be either aluminium, stainless steel or carbon fibre!
@@MichlinMetals Do you know where I can find aluminium house hold items like watering cans and bottle openers? I will buy them if you have then and when I have the money!
Love the videos! I recently started a new metal brokerage company to sell Steel and aluminum coils/extrusions and your series has been a big help.
Wish you the best of luck and thanks for the positive feedback!
Hello, I cast aluminum. I have cast 6061 acluminum. Can 7075 be cast? If so, does it lose its hardness properties?
Yes it can. Neither 6061 or 7075 will develop full properties unless solution treated and aged.
As cast properties will not be predictable

Which one is best and worst for manufacturing bicycle frames in terms of fatigue life over cycle use?

Love your videos! Very informative keep the good works!
Appreciate the feedback and thanks for the comment! Have a good day.
I brought a bicycle made of 6061. Is that a good thing? It is my first bike. What should I know about that metal in terms of taking care of it.

What is tempering temperature and ageing of aluminium 2024
Great video. Thanks. A question: In Al 5083 H321 i dont get what the H321 means. Or specifically the 321. Can you please explain it to me?

What does wrought mean for metals?

Are there any US based suppliers of aluminum 7068 that dont have a minimum order requirement of anything over a ton?
This alloy doesn't exist in distribution. There would be a mill minimum here to the best of my knowledge. I haven't seen it in the wild in all my years of buying/selling.
@@MichlinMetals Shame. So I guess that also means the Chinese and Indian 7068 I'm seeing online might be a sham? Guess I'll make my own
Why do coatings companies say 7075 cant be coated? Nikasil for instance...
Chemical composition of 7075 contains elements that interfere with many electrochemical processes
@@MichlinMetals Can you expand on that?

7075 is actually not very hard its about like 6061 but has high tensile strength. It seems a little less brittle than 2024
Thanks
You are very welcome.

it is ALUMINIUM NOT ALUMINUM
I have aluminimum laying around!
Actually it's not laying around, my tinfoil hat is made of aluminimum.
I think it's funny we call the aluminum foil hat tin foil. Maybe it's BIG AL trying to pawn off the negative stigma! ;)
