An often missed part of the Cathedral is the memorial to the Miners that lost their lives in the pit/ coal mine in Co Durham. Many disasters , Trimdon Grange and Easington Colliery amongst the most tragic .
Awww thanks Tom! The weather was working against me on that particular day so while I was editing I wasn’t too enamoured with the look 🫥 happy to hear you enjoyed it!!
Durham is a fab day, and night out.... as you discovered, lots of great places to eat and of course, drink.... excellent historic walks and buildings..... another great vlog, thank you ❤
We live between Durham & Sunderland and love our walks along the river at Durham. There are so many different routes to take and so many lovely picnic spots. It's a gem of a city. Lebaneat is one of our favourite restaurants (great takeaways delivered from there too) and the Manakeet Cafe opposite the Riverview Cafe you tried is our new 'go to' cafe in Durham. They have loads of vegan options and their food makes for an excellent lunch stop 😊
I remember seeing Durham on the train as well and wondering what it would be like to visit, and now I know. On another note, I just found out that if I get an Australian National Trust membership, I can use it in the UK so that will come in handy for the next trip! Excellent video as always Kat :0)
I have a massive soft spot for Durham. Both of my sons went to Uni there, and my youngest lived in the Castle Keep during his first year there. Love the place.
Thank you for this video! Apart from being visually very pleasing - I had no clue Durham has so much to offer, and I'm so close to Durham so often! I will definitely have to give it a go 🤩
This is wonderfully put together! Durham has always been on my list, for both the cathedral and castle, cause I’m an architecture nerd. 😂 It’s nice to see some really good eats, as well! Great video, as always, Kak! ❤️
Thank you so much for doing such a great job with my beautiful home city. It is very much overlooked as it is small, and people only associate it with students and the cathedral. I love it and am a proud Durham girl.
So so so AMAZING!! I couldn’t wait to watch this!! 😍 Hope I’ll manage to visit it this autumn!! Such a gem!! Thank you and Simon for always giving us the best videos and tips, and for making us hungry with all that amazing food! Would love to try the Lebanese spot! 🤪
Lucky enough to live just south of Durham, river walk is superb, the Vennels cafe fabulous, so many sights, you definitely need to return. Don't forget Vindolanda one day.
Things you need to do next time: river walk around the peninsula and along to Maiden Castle (climb the hill too if you wish), Palace Green Library and Archaeology Museum, Vennels Cafe (my favourite), Botanical Gardens, The Story which now houses the Durham Light Infantry collections and Zen (my favourite restaurant) near the courts and prison. By the way, Hotel Indigo was the old Shire Hall before being taken over by the university. Also consider taking a walk through High Wood behind the main university campus, covered in bluebells in May. If you want to go further afield, I recommend Bishop Auckland (Castle, Grounds, Walled Garden, Faith Museum, Mining Art Museum, Spanish Museum, reachable by changing trains at Darlington) and Barnard Castle (Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, River Tees walks, Raby Castle and High Force if you have your own transport).
Great look around the city! Make sure to come back for the Durham Miners Gala, it's an annual event held every July that celebrates the history of mining heritage from the region. The streets are jam-packed, and dozens of processions of drummers and big brass brands play all the way from the market square down to the racecourse.
I live here in Durham. To the east we have the coast, to the west we have the North Pennines. To the north we have Newcastle/ Gateshead, The Cheviots Hills, Roman history, stunning coastline. The weather often sucks though. I guess you can't have everything!
I think I'm desensitised to the magnificence of Durham as I live locally, but great video highlighting the city in a positive light. A lot of people who are my age and younger only see Durham as a party place, and not for the history and the origin of the city. Durham is one of those places when I was younger with friends what would be a treat to go to, but now it's more of a destination to go to other places in the country through the train station or the bus station. The older I get I actually take in the Cathedral a lot more than I used to and explore the city. Fun story, back when Pokemon Go was in its hayday it was one of the most fun and entertaining days I've ever had as the city was buzzing with excitement for the first rare Pokemon to hit the map. And another funny story while I'm at it, me and some friends left college early to sit on the cathedral grounds when The Avengers was being filmed inside the grounds, I'm not a huge fan of Marvel but it was so cool knowing these A List celebrities were in my area. Great video anyway!
I really liked Durham, maybe next time we'll get to go up to the top of the cathedral, and we should try to go to the Marco Pierre White restuarant that was INSIDE OUR HOTEL...
Thanks for the viedo! I once went to Durham with my mom. We had in mind to visit the ugly suburbs from the Billy Eliott movie, and were very surprised to discover an amazing beautiful city :-)
I didn’t realise Billy Elliot takes place there - or was it just shot in Durham? It’s one of my sister’s favourite movies so I’ll need to let her know!!
@@KakibotBilly Elliott film location was mainly out on the coast at Easington Colliery and Seaham. There were also parts filmed in Middlesbrough. Thanks for showcasing Durham, it's home!
County Durham is unique, as for many centuries it was a virtually independent state ruled not by the king, but by powerful `Prince Bishops', who were more or less the `Kings of County Durham'. Its why its known as the city Of Prince Bishops.
Why did you say durham is in between newcastle and york?? No its not, so get your facts right, its actually closer to SUNDERLAND as we're both on the river wear n just 11mls apart, newcastle is 21.5mls from durham and there's plenty to see n do in Sunderland which is also historic as it was founded in AD 674

Durham looks so beautiful & historic! This must have been here in England 🏴 for so many years here! Thanks for sharing, Kat & stay safe! ❤
The cathedral was built over 900 years ago
I love this city. The footage brings back memories. Nice recommendations as always!

Wasn't expecting that. Hotel Indigo Durham is now on my itinerary. Ta! 🙂
I am glad you visited the Oriental Museum... it is a small museum but what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality.
Newcastle & Durham is in the northeast. York is in Yorkshire 😁 so much history 🏴 great video thanks

On Saturday the market square outside is also packed with traders
Durham is the best and most beautiful/historic city in the North East. There is also so much to see - far more than you had time for in one day.
Since when has durham been just between Newcastle and York?
As much as I want to say that Flat White’s food is as good as it looks, I don’t want the queues for it to get even longer!
Heartstopper books and pride flags! Yay!
I looooooove the UK's architecture. There's something about it that attracts me and makes me feel good.

Is this video recent? It's summer now but you're wearing winter coat?
The difference between Summer and Winter, the rain is warmer in Summer.
This was mid June, tragically 🌧️

I managed to finish the edit today cause I couldn’t bear the thought of you being disappointed about waiting yet another day!!
Jesus they ate like 2 greedy spaniels lol 😂
The old Durham has been absolutely destroyed.. I'm born and bred and it's criminal what the council have done over the last 30 years...
scotlands cant do markets.........sheep testicles and haggis gizzards have a limited market.
