I heard on a music history radio programme that Carole King came home when Little Eva was baby sitting and heard her singing this to the baby, maybe Carole refined it for her.
I had never heard this song before yesterday (I’m 28). My friend is in a performance of Beautiful the musical and I thought it was really cool how Carole King’s babysitter was able to make an actual hit so I looked up the real song. It’s super fun! I can just imagine my grandmother in her youth having a blast dancing to this and it puts a smile on my face.
At a 1989 wedding reception, I joined in the conga line for this song. At each chorus of "Come on baby, do the Loco-Motion", I reached up and pulled downward with my right arm like an engineer yanking down on his horn cord.
This hit from Little Eva went to #1 on the Top 40 charts. It also hit #1 on the Rhythm & Blues charts, the Cash Box charts, in Canada, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden. It went to #2 in the United Kingdom and to #3 in Argentina. It would finish at #7 for the year, 1962. We are almost at the top. Who will be #1? Will Bobby Lewis repeat? Or will a new act take the torch? Stay tuned.

There are some songs/recordings within an idiom that IMO are “perfect” and cannot be improved upon. This is a prime example. I consider Martha and the Vandellas “Heat Wave” to be another examples. Both represent a level of perfection that has never been surpassed by subsequent covers.
This song could have been made even more incredible with more conscientious producing. Little Eva's voice should have been heavily double tracked and then treated in a high quality, reputable reverb chamber with more mids and highs to her vocals, bring them fully out front. Give a little more treble to the amazing wall of saxophone while including an additional alto, tenor, and baritone to fatten the sound up even more. Lastly, employing the Motown bass sound would have really lifted this recording. The drums providing a sixteenth note intro pattern beginning on the offbeat of 3 is killer.

She doesn't sound that great tbh, I know she was very young and all but Eva sounds ameteurish and flat. I've heard better renditions at talent shows. Sorry, don't come for me lol.
