Back in the 70's I was too cool to like music like this, but now as a grown man I am crying my eyes out over how beautiful and moving it is. What fantastic talent Bread was.
I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I was 14 in 1972 and I ate up David Gate’s bittersweet ballads. I also loved rock n roll, drank and smoked too much, and was not uncool. Now, I am sending this song to my 22-year-old daughter, who has the same taste, and will send others to her every once in awhile. Another one I relish is Guitar Man. A long time ago I went with my father, who was a crooner, to a piano bar and for a last song I requested ‘If’. He immediately recognized what a poetic and beautiful lament it is. The songs speak across the generations.
My mother of 97 years old lived through the great depression and unimaginable hardships, she told me once one thing she cannot bear to see is a grown man cry, it just tears her apart. She grew up around lumberjacks and some farmers. She said men of that era were so strong that if they finally did break they had done everything possible and some impossible to make it. We live on the backs of giants.
I grew up in the 70's with their songs around me. every time I hear them i am transported into the warm summer past. It fills me with both happiness and sadness. All those wonderful memories. Thank you 'Bread'.
Bread were one of first super groups I recall. Everyone put around David Gates. And what a band. My favourite has to be Aubrey and guitar man. Awsome band. Play them all the time So heart warming and harmonic. Just beautiful.
Many songs take me back to the 70s like a place marked in time by different music with different memories. I don't know if kids nowadays have that but they sure are missing an important part of life. If you can't look back how do you know where you are or where you're going?
Any guy with a soul can relate to this and feel the pain it evokes. That's the mark of a well-written song. David Gates never got much credit for his songwriting abilities; it was his voice matched to the mood of his compositions that elicited all the airplay and the girlie fans.
Every time I hear this song when he sings "I found her diary under the tree" I scream, "NO DAVID! DON'T DO IT! DON'T READ IT!" But he never listens to me. He opens it and starts reading.
I just bought it last week and I’m 17. Discovered Bread recently and fell in love with their sound. Nothing better than listening to good music, especially on vinyl.

You know it's too bad that there aren't tender, thought provoking songs like that anymore. I mean songs that were played on the AM radio band. I think those songs were called, "middle of the road" music, if I recall. It's between soft and rock. Other artists like, AMERICA, Three Dog Night, Firefall, Orleans, and Dan Fogelberg, would fall in that category.

It takes a rare love to let his woman go after learning she is not in love with him. It takes even a stronger love to give her blessings as she leaves him for the one she truly loves. BREAD is so deep with their lyrics, which is what always make them a classic group. U should check out "It don't Matter to me"....another deep thought by them.
I'm 13 and almost all millennials are obsessed with modern day musics. My brother was the one who said I should listen to this and carefully read the lyrics. It's heartbreaking in the most calming way. Old songs are so poetic and meaningful. I just simply love it. Gotta listen more from Bread :))
I think it's wonderful that you're listening to some of the most beautiful songs and groups that made the 60s and early 70s the best times in my life. If you look hard enough you'll be able to find modern music with the same amount of deep meaning as this song. They are significantly rarer today and they don't often become popular. I recommend you listen to daughter specifically their songs smother and youth. They have a lot of good stuff :)
Rae Anne Sure, I'll give that a shot. I know of a few modern bands that do as well but not primarily. There are others I cannot think of at the moment but I'll give them a listen, thanks.
I love this song so much I had a girl that I was very much in love with but as the song says the one she waited for was someone else not me. It broke my heart. But I found out she went to on to marry a very fine man and have a good life so I have to be happy for her,, But sometimes it just does not stop the tears that flow when I hear this song from way back in the early seventies, But I wish her well God bless her and thanks for the good times..
Clever, thoughtful lyrics like these are rare these days. This is a generous acknowledgement of some people's ever changing emotions, (even our partner's) which we can't control. Bread's best.
When I was a small, small child, my father sings me this song till maybe I fall asleep. Now he's gone, I'm trying to recall those memories of him singing this song. I wish I could still hear him sing this song even just in my dreams. I love you, Papa. The one and only man in my life.
The sweetest song I ever heard in my life and one that I have loved for over forty years! Total classic. Thank you David Gates and the guys for a song that will be with me for the rest of my life.
I'm 18, obsessed wt this generation's new songs... but I heard this once on the radio my mom listening to... and dang! how come it got into me, strikes me hard that made me think I'm unfortunate that I was not born during this era where music can touch someone's soul.
You are just showing your feelings and it shows you are a beautiful person and your 💓 is wonderful there are so many more Aubrey,by bread they have many Everything I owned,is my favorite bread song ,my personal favorite is John Lennon his music is great ,the Beatles I can't get enough, thank you
Just when you think she likes you, all the signs she gives you, it’s all in your head- an imagination you created cause you wanted it. She was never yours, despite my aching heart i will wish her the best :/
I was pining over lost love as a young feller. My granny said to me "Son, if they don't want you, you don't want them." Now all these years later, I see the wisdom in those words.
This song is just so beautiful ❤️ You can feel all the emotions ❤️ wish i live through their years back then. Would love to hear them singing their songs live. Especially Aubrey ❤️
One of the most beautiful songs made at that time, still holds true today. The feeling and the simplistic vocal and arrangement that hits you right in your heart. I fell in love at an early age with an older girl. Sad to say things changed, mistakes of a misguided youth & yet this song...I lived during a time when girls had diaries some may still have them, it was a good time. Many are gone, innocence lost, age & time take it's toll on our lives. But music like this remains with us to feel, enjoy, & reminisce. Peace 2 ya who remember what it was like back in the day.
Im HOH, was deaf til 1976 and first thing i heard was my older sister playing Bread album on her record player..So Bread holds a huge part of my life for that reason and they are my ALL TIME FAVORITE BAND!!! 🤗💞 I've LOVED music ever since! (Oh, and dancing!)
@Ben Lee You can say sometimes again. The main reason I still watch that once great, now shitfest called The Simpsons is because of Tress MacNeille. That woman happens to be my favorite voice actress ever. And losing her might even be the only way that show is ever gonna end.
This was always been one of my favorite songs, i remember playing this before i go to sleep. I was so young to realized how selfless this song is, the last two lines speak volumes "All the good things she can find, all the sweet things they can find."
It has been many years since I heard this song, I think I heard this on a road trip in a car when I was little. The Simpsons played it in tribute to Edna, voiced by the wonderful Marcia Wallace and I forgot how moving this song was. Edna has one of the best character arcs on the show. To see her go through all that hardship, from overcoming past relationships ... I'm glad she found happiness at the end. She was a great balance for Ned and the boys. Marcia Wallace portrayed what every school teacher should strive to be, whilst maybe having a tough outer exterior they have that deep inner core to help kids out and persevere no matter what. It's why she stayed in Springfield after all. Albeit I miss her from the show, it is a tremendous sign of respect from her colleagues to retire the character when Marcia passed, knowing that no one could ever truly match the wonderful character she had created. I hope you inspire many generations of teachers to come. We will really miss you Mrs K.
Beautiful, and created with great sensitivity, the tree, the diary, the smudgy tears on the writing... it's all there. Well done to convey the song. Bravo.
I was a 90's teen, but I loved 60-70s country. The first time I heard this song I cried like a baby, and could sing the whole song hearing it only once.
My childhood friend, my first love, just got wed. I still love her, even now. So every time I hear the lyrics "And as I go through my life, I will wish for her HIS wife", it hits a bittersweet chord on me. I'll always love you... Always...
My love was unrequited, and I spent so much time trying to control the situation, trying to get her to "realize" what we had. Letting go was excruciating and took yet another long time. This song pierces my heart every time. How can such a sad reality be made into such a beautiful song?
Why cant they compose music like this anymore ? THIS is music. Not noise. Comforting and soothes the spirit. Not aggravating like rap, rock and all those garbage.
Franz Tranz They are garbage. If you measure a genre of music which negative impact on civilization rap {ganstah, disrespect of women, bling blings} rock {indecency, undisciplined and lack of responsibility} I was as much into rock when younger. Beatles and such. But when they started questioning those guidelines that define a disciplined and effective society that was it for me.
I was 22 when this song was on the radio. I don't know how it never made it to #1. If I were to introduce one song of the 70's to the millenials these days, it would be this one. As a music major, and one who has done some song writing myself I can appreciate the effort it takes to create something like this. The song is beautiful, from the lyrics to the melody and to the arrangement It is flawless. My favorite song of that decade!
I remember hearing this on the radio when I was 12 yrs old. Remember the moment that song touched me. The bittersweet tears ... This song still makes me cry.
This music and time in my life is what I remember most. Be it a warm Sunday evening, walking to school or working my paper route, I felt full of life with everything I learned. Ed Sullivan, duck Clark, don Cornelius, don Kirchner, Casey Kasem and others were all I needed to get by on... Peace to you all for listening and your thoughtful words. Im now 65. Id listen to "soft rock", r&b and gospel all the time and I still do.
I first heard this song during my freshman year of college down in Orlando. I was doing my Gen Ed and my philosophy professor played this for the whole class. I loved the song and it introduced me to Bread as a whole lol. Even though this song doesn’t really relate to my situation, I sometimes think of this one girl in that class that I never made a move on whenever I hear this. She had dark hair, wore glasses, used to wear lots of band shirts, and crack her knuckles a lot lol. She and I always sat and waited near each other. We interacted for a bit but I never had the courage to take it any further. I regret not taking an action. There’s a chance that I might see her again seeing that I’m still at that university (albeit in my final year), but I’m hoping that maybe she might visit this video again one day and remember how it was back in that class. I learned my lesson though, I’m never gonna pass up a girl I think I might wanna ask out again.
Damn. I hope you get to see her again one day and fix your mistake. It’s good that you learned from the experience though. Life is far too short for regrets my friend!
RUAmplified - Ignore all the stupid references to the edible stuff. Good for you, they were a fantastic group. If you like this give Gabrielle's 1999 album 'Rise' a try. This is also very thought provoking in parts. But then it does remind me of the past.....same as some Bread tracks do.
Es verdad la voz de David Gagues es tan linda y mágica q te llega muy dentro del corazón mas con esta bonita canción otrq de mis favoritas para siempre🎵💖🎵🎼🎵🎹🎸😔😔😪
I wasn't prepared for the last part, when I was a kid I thought this song is a best to sing for your partner yet when I heard it again and read the lyrics, it hits different. The end gives so much pain. 💔💔💔
For some reason, this song just kept rattling around in my head for the last couple days. Finally, the title came to mind and I here I am listening to it again after so many years. I plan to share it with my peers who are also in their 70s.
I first heard found this band by accident I didn't know the name of the band even I listeened to the album over and over back then was 14yrs old I'm 54 now and over the past 40yrs I've found myself cotinuely finding my way back to listening to them there are no words to say how these songs make me feel or the memories old and new I've got now because of the wonderful guys in the band know as BREAD. Thanks guys you've do a great thing by Gracing us with this pleasure. 9
I am 61. I introduced my little kids to this song and now they want to say something. "I loved it!" Why? "Because it..." "I'll tell them ... the first time I heard it...the second time I heard it was now...I really think that it is a good song. I especially like the first part." "It feels like it is in the summertime and it is sad and happy at the same time." Thank you Gabriel, age 7.5 and Pia age 5.9.
Dear whoever is reading this, we don't know each other and there is a strong possibility we might never meet, but we wish nothing but the best and happiness for you 2021
"DIARY -BREAD" BREAD I found her diary underneath a tree And started reading about me The words she'd written took me by surprise You'd never read them in her eyes They said that she had found The love she'd waited for Wouldn't you know it? She wouldn't show it When she confronted with the writing there Simply pretended not to care I passed it off as just in keeping with Her total disconcerting air And though she tried to hide The love that she denied Wouldn't you know it? She wouldn't show it And as I go through my life I will give to her my wife All the sweet things, I can find I found her diary underneath a tree And started reading about me The words began to stick and tears to flow Her meaning now was clear to see The love she'd waited for Was someone else not me Wouldn't you know it? She wouldn't show it And as I go through my life I will wish for her his wife All the sweet things she can find All the sweet things they can find
I'm sorry but anyone else thinks this wife is a bit of a cow? Marrying some other poor man that she doesn't love is hardly 'waiting for' her true love. And then the bint leaves her diary all over the place for him to find because she doesn't have the decency and courage to tell him herself. Well rid, Mr. Bread! (But it is a lovely song).
@bigpippie littlepippiesmomma I think she did make it clear and I think she did it on purpose (This is hilarious, listen to me going on as if they were real!)
I'm in my 30's but grew up attatched to music from the 60's era and its surroundings. Heard this on the radio the other day and it hit me hard. Among the plethora of music from the 60's I know and love, I swear I had a past life then.
I was 22 and just was getting married when this came out beautiful then much more beautiful today! Thank You David Gates and Bread ! I had you on my old 8 track in the car! Love it.
This teen from the 90's is glad to have been raised by a mom who was a teen in the 70's. Thanks to Bread I have the name Aubrey and this is my favorite song.
Bread had a way of making you feel like you were holding your own heart in your hands, waiting for that right person to come and hold it with you and to never feel the hurt and pain that we all would eventually feel
So true Steph. I thought the right person had come along in 1972 but it didn't work out. 46 years later this song really brings back those sad memories. We are still good friends but 15000 kilometres apart.
So many great songs by this amazing band. It don't matter to me, If, The guitar man. Aww, takes me back to great times growing up in the 70s. Life was easy, sweet and fun back then, sending love to my fellow 70s generation, may you be safe during this crazy time. ❤
Everytime I listen to this song a tear comes to my eye. Such sad, beautiful lyrics and phrasing. David Gates had several great songs, but this is my favorite.

Only with the knowledge I have now, then it would be amazing.

Beautiful song of unrequited love.
I don't think Bread ever had a bad song.❤️🔥
That's true love...Wishing the best for someone who doesn't love you back.
@@christinemurphy6899 I've never been too good at that.

Well said..
Plenty of people are still making thoughtful music. Don't be so entitled.

After all these years this song still makes me cry.
When I was a small, small child, my father sings me this song till maybe I fall asleep. Now he's gone, I'm trying to recall those memories of him singing this song.
I wish I could still hear him sing this song even just in my dreams. I love you, Papa. The one and only man in my life.
I was listening to Everything I Own when my dad passed. Godspeed
That is Absolutely Beautiful . God Bless You and Your Papa 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
My dad played this song as well , and it makes me sad hearing it x
I was moved by your comment. My dad's been gone for over 40 years, and I miss him too.
Close your eyes, listen to the song, and your papa's voice will come through. Such memories. 💙
The sweetest song I ever heard in my life and one that I have loved for over forty years! Total classic. Thank you David Gates and the guys for a song that will be with me for the rest of my life.
I'm sorry why are you thinking David Gates that's not the f***** this trying to control all of us masks he's with fauci
If you can shove words such as "disconcerting" to a song and make it sweet...that's genius!

I'm 18, obsessed wt this generation's new songs... but I heard this once on the radio my mom listening to... and dang! how come it got into me, strikes me hard that made me think I'm unfortunate that I was not born during this era where music can touch someone's soul.
Ayo GG - Please give some of their other stuff a try. 'Make It With You' , 'Sweet Surrender' and 'Guitar Man' are also superb.

so true
Just when you think she likes you, all the signs she gives you, it’s all in your head- an imagination you created cause you wanted it. She was never yours, despite my aching heart i will wish her the best :/
I was pining over lost love as a young feller. My granny said to me "Son, if they don't want you, you don't want them." Now all these years later, I see the wisdom in those words.
I feel it too.. We're all powerless when our hearts were broke
She does like you. all the signs she gives you, it is all real. but you are not the one she truly loves.

The latest episode of The Simpsons brought me here when Bart found the diary of his late teacher, Edna Krabappel.
Sometimes the Simpsons can really hit the heart. Homer and his mom was my fave.
@Ben Lee You can say sometimes again. The main reason I still watch that once great, now shitfest called The Simpsons is because of Tress MacNeille. That woman happens to be my favorite voice actress ever. And losing her might even be the only way that show is ever gonna end.
Me too.
I remember this song but hadn't ever really listened to the lyrics.
Heartbreaking. To love someone that much.

same bro episode 11 hehe
This was always been one of my favorite songs, i remember playing this before i go to sleep. I was so young to realized how selfless this song is, the last two lines speak volumes "All the good things she can find, all the sweet things they can find."

Carrie, after hearing this song I finally get it, wish you all the best and happiness you deserve. I'll always love you darlin!
💙💙💙

« If you can teach one kid to do one thing, today will be a success » So much heart that teacher had in the show , We miss you Ms.K
Goosebumps listening to these lyrics and gorgeous voice.
Beautiful, and created with great sensitivity, the tree, the diary, the smudgy tears on the writing... it's all there. Well done to convey the song. Bravo.

Songs like this often grab me by the heart--or throat. This one no exception. Thanks for posting this.
Well put sir...
Born in 2000 and i heard this song its so beautiful and sad. Now who's with me in 2021 playing this song?
I was a 90's teen, but I loved 60-70s country. The first time I heard this song I cried like a baby, and could sing the whole song hearing it only once.
I love this band. I grew up listening my babysitter in the 70 played them all the time and it's always stayed with me. I love. Their music .
Nice. haiku reply. Debbie.
My childhood friend, my first love, just got wed. I still love her, even now. So every time I hear the lyrics "And as I go through my life, I will wish for her HIS wife", it hits a bittersweet chord on me.
I'll always love you...
Always...
Sorry brother. Been there.

Bread accompanied me through my teens in the 70's...I still love EVERY one of their songs...THANK YOU David for being such an amazing singer
Same here! I listened to them constantly. When everyone else was listening to that other stuff....I enjoyed Bread ❤
My love was unrequited, and I spent so much time trying to control the situation, trying to get her to "realize" what we had. Letting go was excruciating and took yet another long time. This song pierces my heart every time. How can such a sad reality be made into such a beautiful song?
When you are happy you enjoy the music , but when you are sad you understand the lyrics ! 😂
Why cant they compose music like this anymore ? THIS is music. Not noise. Comforting and soothes the spirit. Not aggravating like rap, rock and all those garbage.
Yes, music. That is all...
Ogisito rap and rock are not garbage, its just flavors for a different palate.
Just look at Mile Cyrus. If you have a daughter can you honestly say you don't mind if she flaunt her crotch in public ?
Ogisito Well, Miley Cyrus doesn't represent the entire rap and rock world.
I just love this Song! I'm 73 I pretty much grew up listening to this music.
I was 22 when this song was on the radio. I don't know how it never made it to #1. If I were to introduce one song of the 70's to the millenials these days, it would be this one. As a music major, and one who has done some song writing myself I can appreciate the effort it takes to create something like this. The song is beautiful, from the lyrics to the melody and to the arrangement
It is flawless. My favorite song of that decade!
@@johnzech5039I agree it is absolutely beautiful

This music and time in my life is what I remember most.
Be it a warm Sunday evening, walking to school or working my paper route, I felt full of life with everything I learned.
Ed Sullivan, duck Clark, don Cornelius, don Kirchner, Casey Kasem and others were all I needed to get by on...
Peace to you all for listening and your thoughtful words. Im now 65. Id listen to "soft rock", r&b and gospel all the time and I still do.
I always wonder why my mom love this band, now I understand why💓
It’s a beautiful song, no doubt. I still get in the melancholic mood every time I listen to it.

This song simply reminds me of my puppy love.. That diary! Love those yesteryears!
@@giornobeneviste2479 It most certainly is. Thanks for the words.

I listened to this in the 70s and it is still great. Love his voice.
"DIARY -BREAD" BREAD
I found her diary underneath a tree
And started reading about me
The words she'd written took me by surprise
You'd never read them in her eyes
They said that she had found
The love she'd waited for
Wouldn't you know it?
She wouldn't show it
When she confronted with the writing there
Simply pretended not to care
I passed it off as just in keeping with
Her total disconcerting air
And though she tried to hide
The love that she denied
Wouldn't you know it?
She wouldn't show it
And as I go through my life
I will give to her my wife
All the sweet things, I can find
I found her diary underneath a tree
And started reading about me
The words began to stick and tears to flow
Her meaning now was clear to see
The love she'd waited for
Was someone else not me
Wouldn't you know it?
She wouldn't show it
And as I go through my life
I will wish for her his wife
All the sweet things she can find
All the sweet things they can find

Just rekindling myself with this amazing group..the words..the voice.. harmony..bliss all rolled up in one very sweet loaf of Bread
"I will wish for her his wife."
Thats true love
I'm sorry but anyone else thinks this wife is a bit of a cow? Marrying some other poor man that she doesn't love is hardly 'waiting for' her true love. And then the bint leaves her diary all over the place for him to find because she doesn't have the decency and courage to tell him herself. Well rid, Mr. Bread! (But it is a lovely song).
