I got a 50cc Chinese scooter for $1,150. I wasn't expecting much, but I am surprised how capable it is. I have a motorcycle too, but I actually find the scooter way more practical. I can put stuff in the locked trunk, I can put things on the flat floor and so far I only spend $2.50 on gas on an average week. It is very good value for the money.

Thank you for this post. I am currently waiting for a 50cc scooter that I ordered a few weeks ago. Honestly, this is the best frank review (from someone that just uses it as intended). I bought because my car needs a new motor. I only drive about a mile total each day. So that's all I really need it for. I'm not a heavy guy at 155lbs, so I'm well below it's weight limit. Now, thanks to this video I feel much better about my purchase. Thanks again for your review! You Rock!

Got my 50cc from local dealer it's a pretty practical transportation mode, however. It's got no luxury or creature comforts. Cannot go on highway, I got an inflatable seat for comfort, it deflated, so I used the inflatable pillow.
It has no windshield, I don't like that
The seat is cheap no comfort

I am only 1/2 way done watching this video and I can already tell that you are a very smart person who has made some very wise choices for your emergency transportation needs. If I was in your shoes I would do exactly the same thing. You also have the right attitude about driving and maintaining and overall care of your machine. You take care of it and it will take care of you. Why buy a costly junk used car when you can own a brand new scooter for a fraction of the price. It will get you where you need to go just fine. You are a smart guy. Good luck to you.

❤ I have a 2020 TAO 150cc . I just hit 3000 miles driving around Miami. I have owned it straight out of the crate. From the start I put Valvoline 4 stroke synthetic oil in it - 3 oil changes later - I have replaced front brake pads.- starter clutch - all performance electrical upgrades - halogen front light upgrade - total performance upgrade on transmission and belt - rear tire - it will run at 65 mph all day - top speed for mine with my home made exhaust is 71 MPH. with no trouble - I love it so far & it was a gift from a friend - Not to shabby of a Deal ! His invoice total was $ 832.00 . Do your maintenance - Keep it covered when not in use - put a Diehard Gold 🪙 battery in her and ride the Hell out of it Safely ! Yes Mine Does Wheelies all the time . ❤

I totally agree! I bought my Taotao Thunder/ Blade 50 scooter based its affordability. I fully expect to have occasional problems, but I enjoy working on it, and figuring things out. It came in a crate straight from China, and I had to assemble much of it myself with no instruction sheet. Only an owners manual that's written in broken English only after being translated from Chinese, which is comical in itself. I say, there are no bad scooters, only bad, or neglectful owners. So far I've fixed a split fuel line, installed lower shocks on rear, dealing with blown headlights caused by bad factory switch. Installed an Hour meter w/ tachometer. I've done 2 oil changes, and have racked up almost 200 km so far, on less than 2 gallons of gas! It will be interesting to report back in a year. For me this is only a good weather rider, and very seasonal, but I like to ride when ever I get a chance to. :)

      @grazz7865 Год назад

I’m exactly the same. I drain the oil, fuel and transmission eral at the end of the season -usually in December. This winter I installed a big bore kit (80cc). Haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. Wish me luck. I’ll see how it worked out in April.

I enjoy your videos. I've had two Chinese scooters in the past, 150cc and a 250cc. They required so much maintenance that ultimately, the cost of upkeep forced me to get rid of them. Now, like a idiot, I'm thinking about getting another Chinese scooter. However.... This time is going to be different. Doing a lot of research to find the best scooter for the cost. At first, I wasn't interest in a 150cc since they do very poorly on highways and set my sights on a 250cc. But than I discovered the Lifan 150cc KPV! This will be my next scooter. Everyone ride safe!

Most of the people talking down about Chinese scooters are dealers. I was at a local dealer today that straight up said Chinese scooters don’t last long. His cheapest scooter was by a company called Wolf Scooters. We’re talking $1,700. So after trying Pete’s Cycle and finding nothing I pulled the trigger, went on Amazon and bought a Maui X-Pro 50cc scooter. I’ll have fun putting on a couple parts, some assembly required, and see how long it lasts with regular maintenance. It’s not like I need transportation. I just wanted something to enjoy riding during three out of four seasons that uses less gas than my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS.

Got the Tao Tao Bws 150 almost 10 years ago. I drive it nearly every day. Go to the grocery and hardware stores and visit folks sometimes. Over 4,000 km... Oil change two times. I had to fix the throttle linkage when I bought it. Still have the orig belt. Adjusted the valves one time. Dang kick start broke about a year ago. Good videos how to fix but I just ride it. It will do 50mph easy. Paid $1400 for it assembled from a local shop that sold them. Jim.

Im glad to see you have been having a good expereince with your own scooter. Sadly for me I have been having nothing but problems since I got it.
Its been in the shop 3 times as of today and all for bad compression. Its done 2400Km, I didnt abuse it, did proper maintenance on it as instructed and give it the right fuel. Its left me stranded on the side of the road far from home twice now.
I want to believe they can be reliable, but so far im not seeing it.

I have a 125cc lance Cali cab classic that I got from auction it had the CDI box cut out of it. Luckily I had an old 150cc that had a DC CDI box. Once I figured out the wiring. Which involved reverse engineering my zen 150cc. I got it running. I've since tuned the carburator and changed the oil. Got it with 1200 mi. I have put 1000mi on it so far in about 2 months. Down hills it maxes out at 62 MPH and gets me about 65 MPG in the mountains at 2000 ft elevation. And about 75-80 at sea level and flat ground. My car gets 25 MPG so yeah I love it. I'm getting ready to go to work right now I will be riding about 80 miles total today. And I can still pick up a 12 pack of beer on the way home. I take my 10 yet old son out for rides on the back roads as we live in the mountains. $787 compared to $2,200 in gas. For 10,000 miles

It's interesting the opinions people have on things that "aren't" in mass popularity. Once upon a time "japanes motorcycles/scooters" weren't popular and people felt the same way. We have more things in our homes, office, and on our person that are "made in China" than we would like to admit. The reason many have "horrible" experiences with Chinese made scooters/motorcycles is because they place expectations way too high. Chinese 2 wheel vehicles are not given the same look in the West as they are in the east, so quality both in what you get as well as knowing how to work on them is seriously lacking.
In the West we've become too "convenienced" with luxury that we have forgotten what it's like to have to actually work on something. We act like Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mazda don't make bad products. We act like people don't get paid to write good reviews on bad products to get you to buy them, or that they don't snub products because they are financially incentivized to do so. A purchase of anything has to be personal. You worked for the $$$ you need to prayerfully decide how it's going to be spent.
My guy here spent his $$$ on a prayerful decision that has proved a great blessing to himself. I for one am happy for you, and I am seriously considering getting a Chinese gy6 150cc scooter myself.
    Stay riding my friends

My experience is short - I own my one like 6 months and not much kilometers. But I have my conclusion because my scooter is used one with 10 years history. Got it from second hand scooters shop and they provided overhaul before sell. No problems (?) .
Long tome ago used lambretta 175 - also 10 years second hand and I had it for 10 next years so I knew what to expect (pleasure and many small and big problems just for young man ) .
I am nicely surprised - I had no much trust in shopper service and It prooven I was right - I found few important plastics broken, Fuel systen deregulated with issues, but still it was perfectly starting (?) , only driving wasn't not up to my wishes.
I myself diagnozed gas installation, sealed all pipes , made neccessary improvements, made carb adjustment , repaired plasic with metal so it will no brake any more. Nice and not fatiguing job no wokrshop required .
And it rides (125cm) pleasant now , works as should , so far much less problems than I had with my old beloved lambretta - just turn key and smooth ride Takes no more than 3,5 liters /100 and I must watch not to go faster than 70-80km/h - wasn't brave enough to turn full at all. It performs like 175 two stroke 1965 lambretta?
I think it is best choice for someone wiith tech knowledge and some tech imagination - plastics are too delicate to use force, rubbers condition and sealing is to be checked and fixed.
I deliberated to buy new famous brand 125 cm for 3500 Eur - sure better equipped and comfortable with water cooling but changed my mind when found it too heavy and too big for me and for the 4 times more money than 10 year old the same nicely looking chinese. I thing I 'll love it too.

The Chinese scooters are very simple (air/fuel/spark). Which means you have to be at least a little mechanically inclined to keep them running tip top. Cheap to buy and maintain. Cheap registration and insurance so definitely economical to own and use. Remember, you get what you pay for. The bikes with the computers, water cooled, etc will run you $2000 and up.

    but it's mostly electrical issues
they only break down catastrophically if they dont get maintained regularly..

CVT Service and Gearbox Oil Change every three months
    and Subtle Performance Mods

Brings back memories. The real answer is hell no lol. The build quality was awful and things like the speedo stopped working, latches deteriorated quickly, muffler rusted out fast, and the casing on the engine where the muffler attaches just randomly popped one day (bubbles in the steel). It never technically stopped running though… til I crashed and totaled it at an intersection.
You can make them better with aftermarket parts.

Awe man different strokes for different folks I know every vehicle requires maintenance and runs across problems scooters are the easiest and most affordable vehicle to ride and maintain yeah I agree the speedos are not accurate and sometimes need replacing they only cost $12 -15 bucks and are simple to install . I ride all year round only spent $100.00 on gas expenses for everyday riding last year try driving a car for a year on a $100.00 you'll be on empty before the end of the month right ...lol yeah scooters do require basic maintenance but I'm never complaining about gas money or mechanic shop expenses if I need a simple part I buy it on Amazon or Ebay for under $20 bucks do the work myself and keep my two wheels on the road think about it most of the times you see one person driving a car or truck while on the road ways I know a car is comfortable but they eat up gas like crazy and when you need smog checks or brakes done or a part changed out these shops charge you for parts and labor it's not often you can always fix your car or truck yourself nowadays with these new model engines unlike older car models that are easy to work on so yeah I prefer riding scooters they allow me a fun ride and extra money to safe up the days of always saying damn I dont have the gas to drive to work or damn my cars in the shop they want $850.00 dollars for fixing a part that only cost $250.00 not to also mention if you have full coverage insurance so you might want to think about all you said you dont miss about riding scooters buddy especially if your spending way more on car payments, gas for the month, car insurance and repair shop fees after talking about all this that comes with owning a car makes me glad to say I ride scooters no car payments, no outrageous gas Bill's, no high dollar part costs and labor fees and high insurance premiums for full coverage!!😎 truth is you just made me realize that I dont miss driving and I'm lucky to be riding these gy6 affordable Chinese scooters because now I'm able to put all that extra money towards a better cause trip on this comparison a year riding a scooter cost
      1- scooter =$1,200
      Registration fee = $ 200.00
Gas for all year round daily riding = $ 100.00
      Insurance = $ 145.00
      Grand total = $ 1,645.00
Every year after you already bought the scooter you'll only pay $ 245.00 dollars because insurance is yearly and its optional I choose to pay for insurance but only liability and roadside coverage I dont mind paying $245.00 a year to travel on my time on a scooter that goes 55 mph I am going on my 3 Rd winter of riding only scooters been having a blast bro join back in on the fun dont let your first bumber experience blow it for you buy a new scooter like I did twice take care of it they will last and will take you from point a back to point b

I am retired and live in Panama which is above Columbia. I have been riding small and lightweight scooters and motorcycles for more than 20 years. I do not have a car. I speak from experience. When you are first starting out the Chinese motorcycles are fine. Especially if you are learning to work on them. In Panama it is inexpensive to have a mechanic work on your bike. In the US it is not cheap. Save your money so you can upgrade your scooter. If you are a serious scooter rider you want to eventually buy a serious scooter. Like a Honda or a Yamaha. You can buy these used. They last many times longer than any Chinese scooter. You will have the best luck with a traditional style motorcycle. They last the longest. Good luck with your Chinese Scooter. Oh, by the way. A Taiwan made scooter is the best in my opinion.

Hello Grizzy I recommend buying from Q9POWERSPORTS USA they are great to work with unlike other companies who dont answer questions after making your purchase leaving you in the dark wondering when your scooter will come to you these people answer their phones and responds to emails and give it to you straight with no run around I simply asked them if I made a purchase for the 150cc icebear Hawkeye when shall I count on receiving it they said being that it's an out of stock order 2,3 months I went forward with the purchase and sure enough I received it in 3 months of time ...they answered my emails and phone calls making me feel comfortable

Here is some honest for you. Do not take the average Chinese 150cc gy6 scooter on the freeway. They will get you up to 55 mph (maybe a bit more). Also the air cooled engines are not made for endurance. The best thing you can do, if you have one of these, is to add a oil cooling kit. They are inexpensive and easy to install and will keep you motor running cooler. 0:25 They are Chinese 150cc scooters that will do 65mph (gps verified) but they typically cost a grand more and have water cooled engines.

I ground down 2 GY 6 camshafts into fundamental 4 stroke shapes. Slower is actually faster. You don't sag and the exhaust note became very quiet and even. They are VW Beetles with 2 wheels. Taiwan will take over making them if China breaks out into full fledged war.

I just want a trike but it seems that icebear is like the only makers of them.
Got my eye on the Q6 150cc model. If I could find a name brand that did trikes in the 50-200cc range I would but like yea it's only the Chinese makers that do.
I'm a big guy so I'm gonna need the full 150cc to tote my fatass around and being up north I feel better about 3 wheels given how the weather turns in North West PA (Pittsburgh)
Just trying to find someone local since I heard there are some tweaks that are recommended to be made upon purchase.
    Great review. Thank you.

Yes.. when I was in China in 2017 I bought one for like 2,400 RMB around $400 something that time.. it goes up to like 23 mph.
It’s good. It’s fast but not as fast as the others. It have remote to turn on or off and turn on alarm. So if someone hit it hard or move it it will make alarm sound.
It’s better than the ones in America.. the ones in America can’t even match… doesn’t even have remote or alarm… have to put key in and even have a limit of 20 mph because of laws.

Make sure it has a clean title if you are paying market price. No title is a huge gamble but the dmv does have forms and there is a process for lost paperwork. If it was stolen the cops will probable sieze it

There is a quality control difference between made in china and made in Taiwan, obviously items made in Taiwan are built better with quality materials.

    • @GY6-SCOOTERS
      @GY6-SCOOTERS  6 месяцев назад

I agree that Taiwan manufacturers better reliable gy6 engines as my 50 cc had given me way less issues then my 150cc my 50cc was manufactured in tiwan . I decided to purchase a 150cc after 16 months of having a great ride experience with my 50cc that's when I noticed I'm having break downs and poor performance more often with my Chinese built 150cc but honestly it's not internal parts failing on the 150cc just external parts like a carburetor plugged up, a airbox j hose worn out ended up with rips in it from wear & tear , a swing arm weld breaking off that supports my exhaust normally they have 2 clamps I had to use one clamp until my replacement arrived .
I honestly would prefer to purchase another scooter manufactured from Taiwan but I am satisfied so far that only external parts / minor issues after 3 years of riding daily as my only vehicle transportation had happened I really cannot give them both a fare comparison because i only rode my 50cc for 16 months a internal mechanical issue came to be , I fell I love with my 150 cc which was way more powerful and comfortable to ride I ended up parking my 50cc for 3 yrs just about . I keep telling myself I'm gonna fix her and bring her back I already purchased all required parts for her and even a 100cc big bore kit , along with the A9 cam and 100cc carburetor ,nibbi elbow & nibbi filter. I'm just waiting on my 8×8 shelter logic tent I'll be using as a scooter garage once I have my own little privacy work shop to get in the zone without being bothered and distracted by neighbors I'll end up spending much time creating how to videos and having my two scooters back in tip top shape......🙂👍💯

I disagree I believe the 50cc is as good as the owner treats it sorry for your bad experience you should have purchased a dirt bike 50cc are to be ridden properly on roadways and the owner should keep up with normal maintenance such as motor & gear oil changes and drive belt & spark plug swapping 🙂👍
I would like to compare a year of gas expense with you I spent $100.00 riding my 50cc everyday the last whole year , how much did you spend on Gas expenses the last 12 months....🤔
I did need a tune up it was done by me with the parts costing only under $40 it included
      New drive belt
      New spark plug
      New motor oil
      New gear oil
      Valve adjustment
      New valve cover gasket
How much was your last maintenance did you have to take it to a shop ..? Probably paid labor wage fee bye the hour , and parts oil costing you maybe $360.00
I love riding around 50cc and 150cc scooters I know how to work on the engine, parts are sold on Amazon and Ebay for a cheap price and every time I pull up to a gas pump I always fill her up because it only costs $5 bucks the pump from the person before me normally says the last person spent $20 - $80 dollars that would mean $400.00 in gas monthly for most people who drive cars & trucks who makes fun of 50cc scooters or 150cc scooters it's so funny because my two scooters in town traffic keeps up with other cars & trucks it sure feels good enjoying a fun ride and allowing my savings to accumulate 🤑 lol....so make fun of 50cc scooters all you like your the one who is really over paying and always broke think about it it's a money saver riding a scooter to work and back or to a doctor's appointment or to go grab a gallon of milk and a couple other things spend your money on yourself and family not on high gas prices and high costing mechanic shops well it suits me fine I'm single my two sons are already in mid 20s living in their own houses and have their little family so i dont need a car if I'm transporting only myself around, buy yourself a scooter for simple errands and to go to work save your car for when you take the family out you'll end up having more money to spend on better things then on gas every week
