    Heads up to anyone thinking of buying the latest V3 version of the ST2 brake module.
    Its advertised as...
    "ST2 Brake Module uses an accelerometer and motion detection sensors combined with a proprietary algorithm to detect engine-braking or down-shifting.
    It’s an intelligent system that doesn’t interfere with the actual brake light operation."
    That sounds like it has a 6 axis IMU doesnt it? It does not... it has a simple tilt switch.
    I could have cobbled one using a tilt switch for less than £5. This corner cutting simplicity of a cheap tilt switch provides no frame of reference for the attitude of the bike which means that it could also activate going down a hill even when not slowing.
    Also... and I quote directly...
    "FLASHES YOUR BRAKE LIGHT WHEN SPEED DECREASES DUE TO ENGINE
    BRAKING OR DOWN-SHIFTING"
    This is false... it flashes once on initial power up but in normal functioning use it only activates the brake light on de-acceleration with no flashing. Misleading advertising.
    Earlier version/s used to also have the flashing option if mounted upside down but they have done away with that in the V3.... and if you want that capability you now have to buy their new brake flasher seperately.... its called the ST2 Strober and its not advertised to the general public... (maybe to hide the fact that the V3 doesn't have this functionality any longer?) You are only informed about its existance by email after you have bought the ST2 brake module... and its an extra £34.39 posted just to have the same functionality of the previous versions of the brake module... obviously to make more money.
    To have only half the functionality of the previous version and not making their customers aware is as low as it comes.I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known and I feel ripped off. Not a good way to do business ST2 but don't worry I'm going to post this on every video site I can find so that prospective buyers can make fully informed decisions, they deserve to know what they are really buying and not to be deceived.

    Thanks for this. You addressed my concern, when I saw a similar unit demonstrated here in the US. That unit has its own light that attaches to your helmet, and it did seem like it was quite annoying to the drivers behind you - so much so, that I think they would just ignore it after a quick minute of two, thinking the brake light is malfunctioning. The fact that you say this does not activate in slow moving traffic is great.
    Thanks! I think I will give this one a try.

    I think those that scoff at such a product should bare in mind that a lot of buses, trucks and particularly the Scania fire appliances I used to drive have electric retarders that come into operation when you take your foot off the throttle, they also put the brake lights on as you slow down so it's an idea that's been around a while. Great review Stuart.

      Forgot to add, I tend to use industrial 'peel and stick' velcro for attaching such modules. Here it would make access to the brake reservoir easier. Adding a thin coat of contact cement to the surface prior to attaching the velcro makes it quite secure.

    I've used the highway code's up and down arm signal ONCE in my entire life, it was in a situation where I wasn't convinced they were even looking and if anything, I was telling them "SLOW TF DOWN" seeing as I was almost halted anyway! Also, there's nothing stopping you touching your brake lever, the switch is really high and won't affect your actual brakes per se.

    As an advanced motor cyclist you ride by the gearbox not braking to slow down and your in the correct gear to get in and out of bends etc. Many times been told my stop light not working and people al most run in to me on ride outs, this is just what I need Stuart , must save my pennies and get one of these devises.

    Interestingly, I've been thinking about this type of device for a week or two now, as I have recently returned from touring in Europe and rode some phenomenal roads, including some hairpins going up and down the valleys of Luxembourg and Belgium.
    On one such occasion I followed a newish bike '22 plate BMW (I think) that had a engine braking device/indicator, this made it much easier to follow down the hills than a later model bike that didn't, as it was easy to identify the bike was slowing via engine braking, rather than applying the brakes.
    your video has prompted me to take the plunge, and for the price, this can only be money well spent - I'll let you know how I get on!

    Just FYI, I just has one of these delivered and was working the install on my 2020 T120 and they must have changed the size of the unit housing as it's larger and more rectangular than what yours is. I was actually surprised when I opened the box as I was expecting a fairly small item. It's also plastic instead of the metal case that I believe yours is. I placed a small square of dense foam between the top of the brake reservoir and the unit, both to raise it a tad and to offer some compression for the ties to work against and help isolate it a bit. It still fits on top of the brake unit but it's tighter. The side cover still fits fine so in the end it remains a viable installation location but there are some differences in the item itself.

    This is especially noticeable on vehicles with regenerative braking. They can slow down quite sharply with no indication at all. It's dangerous. Watch those Scotchloks though, they're unreliable. Once you've verified that it works, the joints should probably be soldered.

    You're absolutely right Stuart, regarding legislation. Why because electric cars have regenerative braking and the next generation (The Nissan Leaf arriving in the UK in 2019 etc) will have one pedal driving as an option (E-Pedal?). This is like riding an old British Single x 10. As you release the accelerator pedal you control deacceleration right down to a stop. It follows that you have to control the brake lights with some other means than pressing on the brake pedal. Great video luv ur presentation.

    Ive seen a couple of RUclips bloggers fit this now, I would seriously worry that any driver behind your bike would assume the rider is being hesitant or constantly riding the brakes? I would be intrigued to see what the reaction and behaviour is from surrounding traffic as you use this system over the next few months? I will add those of us that are IAM or ROSPA trained generally give a quick show of brake lights if we intend to change our speed drastically via engine braking and not actual brakes- thank you for testing this though it’s good to see manufactures producing new tech that may be valuable :)

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 лет назад +2

      The annoyance of other drivers is im afraid their psychological problem. the purpose of a stop light is to display to other road users that you are slowing down or in the process of stopping and that is exactly what this unit does! the flashing mode was used only for filming purposes as explained in the video. I spent 11 years working in the emergency services and i know from experience this device will save lives! Thank you for watching.

      stuart fillingham thank you for your reply- this is why I like your channel you are honest :) I would be interested in a follow up once you have had time to use the product some more, hopefully the manufacturer of this module considers some bike specific plug and play connectors in the future :)

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 лет назад

      I think honesty is the best policy on here, we have to remember your average rider/driver only has average training and anything that gives the guy behind a wake up call is a good thing, there are far too many complacent drivers on the road and we all need to be alert. ive had two friends hit from behind in the last year and i believe on one of those occasions this device may have prevented it. i dare say i will revisit it in the future!

    Great review and presentation as always (reasonably new viewer catching up on your back catalogue :)...). I ordered one and it is on it's way. A must have, especially in the chaos that is L.A. traffic. Although I am probably going to choose the flashing signal as to differentiate from normal braking. I do a lot of canyon riding out here but am not the fastest rider going in to the turns (especially since I often have my daughter on the back), and have had cars on my rear more than once (always let the pass if I am holding them up). This will give me a tiny bit more piece of mind ;).

  • @AngryPrawn

    I think you're missing the most important aspect of this device. Flashing red light on the rear during deceleration? It makes your bike look like an F1 car! Well worth the ~£50 for that alone.
    In all seriousness, I've been wondering why this wasn't a thing for quite some time, so I'll definitely be picking one of these up for myself. Thanks for the review.

    I have watched this video and read through the comments but have not learned what the image is of the modulated braking with a single rear incandescent lamp versus the depicted rear LED brake display that cascades the braking signal upon engine braking or deceleration. I have an 87 Kawasaki ZL1000, a 94 Honda Magna 750, and two gen 1 Yamaha V-Max (94 & 07) which none have newer brake light LED panels, but just a simple single bulb incandescent brake lamp.

    The product is very interesting. I am about to take ownership of a new BMW R18 and I am a believer in having all the rearward illumination possible. But, like a lot of new models, the R18 has just two rear turn signals which also serve as the brake light. And they are not very large. SO I DO want more rear lighting effect, but I'm wondering if this simple device will work well on a bike that has no conventional taillight and will it make a significant difference in capturing the attention of the cell phone jockeys behind me?

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 лет назад

      Your very welcome Kevin! I am pretty sure this would work just fine on the WC T100. although Smart turn systems are probably the best people to ask in order to be certain. as for your other question, its a matter of personal preference really, i see this as a safety aid and as such, to me it would be preferable if it worked in a similar way to the brake light i.e. to light continuously when activated. but that is just my preference!

  • @ostekuste3646
    @ostekuste3646 6 лет назад +3

    Stuart, I have been in the habit of tapping the brake lever slightly when in traffic while I am using engine braking. Just a couple of quick bumps to engage the stop light so it may get the attention of following traffic and make them aware I am slowing. Not really enough to even cause any movement of the brake caliper. Now, when on clear country roads I don’t do this, just in stop and start and heavy traffic. So do you think developing this as a habit is good? Is this tech better than what I am doing? Thoughts?

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 лет назад +3

      Thats a good question Chad! The only problem i have with the technique you use is that from the perspective of other road users you have momentarily engaged your brake and then released it! To this end you may have got their attention which is good, but it doesn't necessarily signal to them that you are continuing to slow down! im not sure which country you live in but i know that advanced driving courses here in the UK advocate this technique. in the absence of this technology really its all you can do but to my mind it is a signal that has always been ambiguous and lacking in clarity!
      It can have the effect of introducing a period of confusion to the driver behind you, who has to decide what caused the brief flash of the brake light and whether it has any consequences to him or her. 2 or 3 seconds of confusion or hesitation at 60 mph can equate to a hundred metres or so of travel!
      My personal view is that this device now overrides and outdates that sort of riding, as it gives a clear signal and understanding to other road users of what is actually happening! THE RIDER IN FRONT IS SLOWING DOWN! It removes any uncertainty as to whether you are slowing down or not!
      Thanks for watching!

    Thank you for this...I will try to find this for my Street Twin here in Thailand. One quick aside question - have you installed fog/driving additional lighting on your T120? I would like to increase my daytime visibility and am looking for modern small amber lights that will still look good on the Street Twin vintage look -

    Another excellent review, thank you Stuart, of an item which addressed what I believe is a potential threat form collecting a rear-end shunt. So I ordered one a week or two ago. However, do read on …
    Order confirmed. Received email from some Herbert called David from the company / manufacturer, offered great discount, great product, etc, etc., help to fit … in fact, he only just stopped short of offering to fit it for me! Another email offering discount (I replied I had already ordered; “Sorry, sent by mistake”. Then, after 10 days it hadn’t arrived so I emailed. No reply. Emailed again. This time, the reply said they were very busy and please don’t keep emailing as it distracts us and causes delays!
    This is absolutely not a reflection of anything Mr. Fillingham has said, as he always does this in good faith and reports as accurately as his experience of any product allows. However, beware of this appalling, and very strange, service. The company are based in Slovenia. I rest my case. I’m sure the product is as Mr. Fillingham has described. However, the company are useless (personal experience) and give a sense of being untrustworthy. I have asked for a refund. So far, that request has not been addressed. As ever, caveat emptor.

    Hi I wanted to ask if it will stay illuminated or blinking once the bike has stopped? I want to install on a dirt bike for trail rides, and I'm looking for an alternative to installing new master cylinder with switch, or a switch on the rear brake. Don't expect you to condone this as a street bike replacement, but for off road riding what's your opinion on using this as main system for the rear brake?

PS congratulations, your videos are spectacular and very useful! thank you very much !

    Ordered mine. Makes too much sense not to. Dumb question Stuart: When you apply the brakes does it go flashy-flashy or is that just for engine braking? Great video. Thank you!

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Steve! I knew i should have explained that! no the brake light will always override the module and normal brake light illumination will occur. If you watch the scene where i am approaching the roundabout the light flashes but i then applied the brake at the end and it changed to steady on. I do intend changing mine to continuous it only set it like that for the purposes of the video. you will like it Steve personally i think it is a major leap forward in road safety. just my opinion. thanks again for watching!

      I fitted the smart turn signal kit this past weekend and it is incredibly smart! I tried to fool it many times, but it just works flawlessly. Should be at the top of the mod list along with the smart brake system. You will notice vehicles backing off once installed. If it irritates a motorist here and there, so what, it means they are noticing your speed decrease and very well may save your life. Get them both. Best 2 mods for me.

    Fitted this module to my T120 and it doesn’t work, even flicking the side stand sets it off, to make matters worse the company sent a 2nd unit and it did exactly the same, now they won’t reply to my emails requesting a refund. Appalling customer service

    This looks like a seriously good modification but I recall reading about it over a year ago and one reviewer on Amazon (which I have just spent fifteen minutes recovering) claimed that he discovered it interfered with the ECU after being installed for a wee while. Part of his review reads, "Installation was a breeze and the rear brake light would activate (as advertised) with engine braking and deceleration. HOWEVER, after a couple of months my speedometer needle would glitch and dip to zero when still going at speed (45 MPH+). The mechanic found out it was indeed interfering with the "CAM network" that controls the indicator lights and was causing issues with the ECU." He was describing what he claimed to have happened to his T100. I usually don't put much store by reviews, given the ease with peole can screw up assembling or installing gear. The Bonneville SE is listed among the compatible bikes and I imagine it should be fine but.... However, has anyone here experienced any potential ECU problems?

    • @stuartfillingham

      ive never had a problem with mine. cant see how attaching it to the brake feed can effect the ECU.

      @@stuartfillingham Thank you for the reply Stuart. I am certainly not an electrician or mechanic but it didn't seem to me to be logical that it could affect an ECU. As it is, I ordered the part yesterday and will be fitting it. P.S. Love the channel.

    With the hand signal, firstly, as you say, no one knows they should do it, secondly, no one knows about it who might see you doing it and thirdly, you are removing a hand from the thing that gives you control over the vehicle and waving it around, possibly while at high speed!

    If it's a rear end accident it is the fault of the vehicle in the rear. Why would you say "let's not place blame"? People on their cell phones and not paying attention. I have taken accident reports for 32 years and I can't remember a single rear end accident that wasn't the fault of the driver in the rear. Place blame.
