The Ancient, Biblical Roots of Catholicism (w/ Dr. John Bergsma)

- In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend theologian, biblical scholar, and former Protestant pastor Dr. John Bergsma to talk about the roots of Catholicism which stretch back not only into the Old Testament with the Levitical Priesthood but the very beginning of the Old Testament itself in Genesis and the Garden of Eden.
Dr. Bergsma unpacks his own conversion to Catholicism which involved not only looking at how the Early Church understood Christ, his mission, and the nature of the Church, but digging right back into the Old Covenant priesthood to understand the template that God was establishing with the Jewish people - a template He would use to fulfill that covenant in Christ with the establishment of the Catholic Church.
This is an episode for the history books. If you want to understand the paradigm through which so many Catholic converts come to understand Christianity, this is a conversation you aren't going to want to miss.

This was dynamite!!! New convert to Catholicism from Southern Baptist and NEVER made this connection until listening to Dr. Bergsma connect the old with the new. So mind blowing to me just how detailed & precise God’s plan is for humanity. I’m learning so much and grateful for my Catholic faith and the rich history it flows from!
Love hearing this! Welcome! And thanks for watching. Glad it was so impactful! Praise God!
Catholicism is an ocean of spiritual depth. Welcome home!
Spot on. Welcome Home. Pax Christi
Without any argument, the Catholic Church is the Fullness of Truth and its very spiritually rich.
I'm 6 years into my conversion from being a Southern Baptist. It's so amazing, once you start exploring, how so much of the objections to Catholicism just fade away!
I was brought up Catholic but left the church and married a Protestant man. I was awakened to the Lord at a revival in 1977. We both attended devout & conservative Presbyterian & baptist churches for 45 years.
But at 68 yrs of age I am feeling as if I’m being called into the Catholic faith - please pray for me as I discover my beginning roots in catholism and for my sweet kind husband to make this journey together.
Praying for you! What an exciting journey.
You're definitely coming back to the Church. No need to delay, come now.
WELCOME HOME!!!

You're being called to the completion of revelation. Protestant churches are stunted, truncated, with 7 books missing from their bible, a denial of legitimate authority, and a denial of the Real Presence, which is the source and summit of God's presence among us.
@mitchellosmer1293 if you had ears, you would listen...
But given that you're not really listening to these learned people, how about you run the same old Protestant answers pass some Jewish [culturally speaking] people who are Catholic....see how far you can attempt to stretch them. Then get back to these guys whose studies also fully reflect the absolute connection between the Jews and Catholics....including the Bible. Go on....do it...be that Bible warrior that will prove in your Protestant world that Catholicism is not of God!
Holy smokes ❤ this is fantastic! I could listen to Dr. Bergsma all day. I literally think I have all of his books. Stunned by scripture and Jesus, and the dead sea scrolls are incredible …definitely had a huge influence on my conversion as a former Lutheran/Baptist to confirmation in the Catholic Church this year 🥰
Two questions:
1. How can you be both Lutheran and Baptist? They don’t teach the same things.
2. Do you know how to be saved according to the catholic church?
Yes, for number 2: be baptized.
Awesome!!!
@@markc4176 I wasn’t Baptist and Lutheran at the same. If you were actually curious, recently shared my conversion story, and what drew me to the Catholic Church on Quest for Faith with Bryan ruclips.net/video/t6FnVuWN_vg/видео.html I am beyond grateful and literally finally feel like I am at home in the Catholic Church. My faith has been strong and personal for almost 30 years, and yet it has grown more in the past couple of years since coming into the church than I can even explain. It truly is the fullness of The Christian faith 🙏
@@TheCordialCatholic AMEN 🙏
This is sooo good. Been there, questioning the Protestant church that I was a part. It began to make no sense. No tradition or real authority. I became starved for liturgy, and the holy worship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Thanks you for this discussion!
Thanks for watching!
Dr. Bergsma is one of those Bible Scholars that you can truly put your trust in...not to mention how he can bring the Bible alive for me!
Thank you Keith! ⚘️

@@mitchellosmer1293 Thank you. That’s a very nice list of Bible verses which prove nothing since the ancient Catholic Church was known as the Way which grew and developed into the only and universal Christian Church since it is the only Church, Mat16:18 Jesus told us he would establish. Jesus also told us he is the head of the body, the church, Col1:18. And Jesus can’t have more than one body any more then he can have one bride, read Eph5:26-32, “This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.” However as the Catholic Church grew by 107AD the Church was commonly known universally as Catholic, see Ignatius “Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude of the people also be; even as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. -Letter to the Smyrnaeans, Ch 8. Catholic is derived from the Greek katholikos meaning universal ie on the whole, according to the whole, throughout all or in general. In fact Universa Ecclesia is found in the Jerome/Latin Bible in Acts5:11 where Universa means for/of all nations. Or “Et factus est timor magnus in UNIVERSA ECCLESIA et in omnes qui audierpunt haec” because that is how Jesus promised it would be, one holy Catholic and apostolic. Even the KJB affirms “ALL NATIONS” in Mark11:17, “Is it not written, my house shall be called OF ALL NATIONS the house of prayer?” The Catholic Church is also reference in Acts9:31 in Greek as EKKLESIA KATH OLES, “ai men oun EKKLESIA KATH OKES tes ioudaias kai samareias eichon eirenen.”
So no matter how hard you try to prove the Catholic Church isn’t the Church Jesus established all you prove is that you are denying Jesus. Perhaps rather than fighting against Jesus you should try to know how “one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.” 1Tim3:15. Good bye.

so john, do all old testament covenants apply to modern Christians? if not, which ones and which parts of ones?
Bendiciones.
1. By what _authority_ do you claim when you read/interpret the Bible?
2. Why do you believe your _authority_ is the correct one?
3. From what _authority_ does your interpretation come?
4. Why do you believe THAT _authority?_
5. Who believed your interpretation prior to Martin Luther inventing his own church to compete with Jesus' one, holy, catholic, and Apostolic Church?
Very eye opening. How be it that this is not preached everywhere?
Keith, did you come up with the comparison of God-breathed Scripture and God-breathed apostles? That's amazing. Should be a point in all sola Scriptura debates! James White would be knocked off balance by such a "jab."
You know what, I’m not sure where I first heard it but it’s a great argument to be sure.
@@TheCordialCatholic You should pass this debate argument on to Suan Sonna, Trent Horn, etc.
Trent Horn has lately taken the approach of trying to demonstrate that the adjective theopneustas/God-breathed was applied to a wide-variety of uninspired works by Jewish and/or Christian sources. But is that really the best approach??
But if he just told White and Ortlund that Scripture clearly shows that MORE than Scripture is God-breathed, I think it would be a more persuasive argument against sola Scriptura.

I have a challenge to the idea behind trusting the early fathers in their affirmation of the authenticity of the scripture authors: is is possible that the Holy Spirit led them into truth here, and that we coul trust them when they defended the authenticity of the scriptures, but that it doesn't necessarily follow that we must trust EVERYTHING they taught and wrote about? Just as today you might trust the testimony of some individual when it can be cross-examined and validated, but you must not therefore trust this person on everything else they say.
PS. I do trust the early fathers, and believe that they rightly passed on the tradition handed to them by the Apostles, but I would like to know how to respond to such a challenge.

Ancient??? Less than 1700 years is ancient??
@@mitchellosmer1293 It is 1990 and will be 1991 at Pentacost.
In the Old Testament non-priests who do not include the priests. - the tribe of Levi- in their offering ceremonies go badly wrong.
- Gideon creates a priestly garment for the Israelites to worship and give thanks, which is against the law.
-Nathan, a pagan general who is cured of leprosy, offers a human life as thanks for his cure. The sacrificed ends up being his daughter.
-Jews adopted worship practices of their neighbors.
A good question is, what happened to the Levites? They were supposed to live among the tribes and receive the leftovers of the offerings in the temples. They had instructions on how to give thanks in a way pleasing to God.
it was tyndale's translation of the bible that initially downplayed the priesthood by changing the word "bishop" and "church" ...
Ellen G. White of SDA contributed by preaching that she had a vision of priesthood no longer needed.
The ancient Biblical roots of Catholicism, you say? If that's true, where in the OT did Catholics get the idea that...
1. God is a trinity?
2. single Catholic priests are obligated to remain celibate?
3. Catholics can worship inanimate images such as statues and relics?
At around 36 minutes in John mentions that you have sacrifice in the Catholic faith and I wondered what that is?
The mass!
The Eucharist is a sacrifice. There is a good article on it called "The Eucharist as a sacrifice" by John M. Grondelski over on the Catholic Answers website.
Protestants would be well advised to stop denying Jesus. Jesus said in Mat5:17-18 “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.” In other words Jesus perfects the Old Covenant with His New Covenant. I’m so glad to hear that!
Reading an important book on this subject," Fifty Years In The Church Of Rome" by Charles Chiniquy. The whole book is astounding regarding the paganism in the Roman Catholic Church. But, the most shocking quote is on page 682. “… It may be added that there is more certainty of doing the will of God by obedience to our SUPERIORS than by obedience to JESUS CHRIST, should He appear in person and give His command…” Saint Ligouri, The Nun Sanctified [upper cap emphasis mine]
--THe FACT that the first Catholic church in Rome--built after 300AD!!!
Indeed Jesus Christ started his One true Church with full Authority that he gave to his Apostles and their Successors, for when Jesus was speaking to the Jews the Jews said they never heard any man speak as he did because they said that he spoke as one with AUTHORITY.And indeed also when God started the Old Testament hierarchy and priesthood in the Old Testament through Moses it didn’t end when Jesus died on the cross but it was continued and passed on to the apostles and their disciples by teaching the apostles and their disciples the understanding of what the Old Testament priesthood and hierarchy were taught and celebrated but could not understand it until Jesus Christ fulfilled it through his life and death upon the cross which it was leading up to of all ceremonies that the Old Testament priesthood was taught and celebrated
Catholicism is not a new religion but natural continuation of Judaism under the new covenant of Jesus's salvation and Judaism in fact was the pre mesiahnic Catholicism

It is not the reestablishment of the priesthood, but rather the continuation of the priesthood, because look in the book of acts, it says, even many of the priests became obedient to the faith, and they did not change their calling
Cordial Catholic you are much too much talky! Let your guest speak. That's who we want to hear from. I'm saying this nicely thankyou.
It’s paganism The worship and veneration of Mary, the dogma, holy water, rubbing wooden beads and saying the rosary “holy MARY mother of God etc” over and over again is exactly what Jesus meant when he said “Don’t recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!”matt 6:8-10.
Would your side please STOP condemning yourselves by spreading the lie that Catholics worship Mary. It's just not worth going to Hell for!
“Thou shall not bear false witness.” You don’t know anything why Catholic venerates Mary. Stop being a parrot and get out of the satanic lane of your protestant lies.
John Jewel (1522 - 1571) Anglican Bishop of Salisbury , said:

Imagine caring or taking seriously what a protestant who belongs to a sect that allows gay married men and women priests thinks. He never read the Early Church Fathers or St John Chrysostom or any early Saints works on the Holy Eucharist.
Catholicism is the legitimate continuation of ancient Judaism not first century Judaism or rabbinic Judaism but the Judaism of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the Melchizedek priesthood. King Josiah removed the religious artefacts, imagery and practices of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and almost all the kings in Jerusalem - Josiah enforced the Deuteronomy version of the Moses religion on the people. The religious items of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had survived in the land until 6th century BCE - sacred oak tree, pillars, altars, places outside Jerusalem to offer sacrifice.
In other words, the ‘Moses’ religion with the ten commandments and the Aaron priesthood did not finally replace the Abrahamic faith and the Melchizedek priesthood until just before the first temple was destroyed. No indication in the early chapters of Isaiah, written in 8th century BCE, that the prophet knew about Moses and the ten commandments.
The two temple rituals originally exclusive to the high priests were carrying blood into the holy of holies on the Day of Atonement and eating the most holy Shewbread (manna) on the Sabbath. These were combined to become the Catholic/Orthodox Eucharist. 3 times a year the holy shewbread would be presented to pilgrims in Jerusalem on the 3 major feasts and the jewish priest would hold it aloft and say "Behold Gods love for you".
It is beyond doubt that the first christians were concerned with reinstating the faith of the FIRST temple which became "Christianity". Images and practices that most Christians take for granted such as priesthood, the shape of a traditional church building, or the imagery of sacrifice and atonement are all obviously derived from Solomons Temple. By reconstructing the world of the older faith it can be shown that Invocation of the divine Presence, Incarnation, Resurrection, Trinity, Sanctification (the human becoming divine), the Mother of God and the self-offering of the Son of God were also drawn from the temple.
The gospel as it was first preached by Jesus, and as it was developed and lived by the early Church, concerned the restoration of the true temple, the First Temple.
Albertus Pieters (1869-1955)Missionary to Japan and later professor at Western Theological Seminary, wrote:
Two attempts. have been made by Satan to rebuild the barrier that Christ destroyed; the first when the church returned to the legalism of the Old Dispensation in the Roman Catholic perversion of the Middle Ages, when learning was well nigh buried under a mass of bigotry, and the church vainly fancied she could have Religion without Science. This ended with the Reformation. Mission Problems In Japan The Board of Publications of the Reformed Church in America 1912 pp. 134-5

This is absolutely false. Reading Isaiah 66:21-22 the Lord was actually saying earlier in Isaiah 66 everyone with a humble and contrite in spirit trembles at His Word and honors His commands
He then rebukes the hypocrisy of the sacrifices offered by the “one who offers incense, as one who blesses an idol” In vs .s 20 and 21 the Lord says “I will also take some of them as priests and Levites” says the Lord
meaning the priests and Levites were from the Jews and this Aaronic line of priests would cease. No Gentile could partake, but now that Christ has come,Jesus our Great High Priest, by the once and for all sacrifice on the cross, burial and resurrection made a way for Gentiles to enter into the Holy Of Holies. 1 Peter 2:9-12 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Jesus was the once and for all sacrifice for sin. He is our High Priest. There is no one who substitutes for Him or can stand in His place. He abolished the need for priests performing “unbloody manner” He doesn’t offer Himself up anymore as in the eucharist. He Finished His perfect work on the cross. Hebrews 10
Hebrews 10:11-18 11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[a]
17 Then he adds:
“Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more.”[b]
18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
You are teaching a false gospel which is no gospel at all. See Galatians 1:6-10
I pray the Lord opens your eyes and hearts and the hearts and eyes of your followers

The Bible cannot be an authority because it is not alive. It's a book. It has to be interpreted. You can make the Bible mean anything you want, depending on how you read it and what tradition you apply to reading it. Authority lies in the Church, guided by sacred tradition and the Holy Spirit. The Bible is part of sacred tradition, but it requires the teaching authority of the Church, handed down by Jesus through his Apostles, to interpret it correctly.

These two words"Apostolic succession" have been used as a kind of polemic against the CC . You are correct in the criteria for Apostleship.
The first Christians had no doubts about how to determine which was the true Church and which doctrines the true teachings of Christ. The test was simple: Just trace the apostolic succession of the claimants.
Apostolic succession is the line of bishops stretching back to the apostles. All over the world, all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the time of the apostles, something that is impossible in Protestant denominations (most of which do not even claim to have bishops).

Respectfully, Roman Catholics and Protestants do share a paradigm that is more fundamental than the one described by the host. That is why the pro-Catholic arguments from RUclips apologists and the like are so powerful for so many Protestants. Catholics have better answers to the questions that arise out of their shared paradigm. I see so many ex-Protestants on RUclips posing questions and then showing how the Catholic answers are superior. But they never seem to question the underlying paradigm itself, the one that they share with Protestants.
This paradigm is based on a particular conception of God and God’s relationship with Humanity specifically, and all of creation generally. This conception of God gives rise to a problem that both Protestant and Roman Catholic apologists purport to solve. The problem is one of SEPARATION from God. It doesn’t really matter how one conceives of the separation. Protestants and Catholics believe that Original Sin has created ontological separation between God and God’s creation and that the separation persists through space/time until the proper prayer is said or the right act is made that closes that ontological gap. Of course one needs a God who fits into this model, and that conception of God is one that prioritizes God’s holiness above Love. This ‘holiness paradigm’ is what all of these apologetic videos are based upon.
So, it turns out that, at another level of analysis, there really is no difference between abolishing the old covenant and replacing it with the new covenant (Protestant), and the new covenant fulfilling the old covenant (Catholic), because they’re both attempting to answer the same basic question, ‘How can separation from God be overcome?’. In Old Testament terms, the lens that Protestants and Catholics use to see everything is the age old and well worn Tree of the Knowledge of God and Evil in stead of the seldom used lens, the Tree of Life.
Jesus Christ became flesh to shatter our most fundamental paradigm, SEPARATION. There is no separation between God and God‘s creation. There never has been, nor will there ever be. The problem is not separation! So the solution is not getting me back to God (Protestant), or getting God back to me (Catholic). The solution is to “see“ in the here and now what always already IS (Paradox).
Remember that Jesus came to show us the Father. ‘If you have seen me, you have seen the Father’. Jesus is what God is always already looks like. This is what the Eucharist is all about. Jesus Christ (Divine Immanence) shows us what the Father (Divine Transcendence) is like (Paradox). They go together, Son and Father, always. Unfortunately, Catholics tend to focus on the former so much (the real presence in the Eucharist) that I wonder what happens to the latter (interestingly, I think one can see the results of this imbalance in images of God like the Pantocrator, that can and have been understood to represent a two-faced God rather than ‘I and the Father are One’). I think Jesus, in the Eucharist, gives us the eyes to see the Father. And those eyes show us that all humanity already participates in Christ (the Divine Immanence), just not yet fully. How could it be otherwise? ‘Eat my flesh’ gives one eyes to see ‘Christ in me’, and then once I begin to see that reality, I can see Christ already in you, and you, and eventually my enemy, for that is what it means to ‘Love your enemy’.
And then there’s the cross. Both Catholics and Protestants, because they view the cross through the lens of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, believe that we can only be in the Father’s presence if we are holy. So that through his life, death, resurrection and ascension, somehow Jesus either covers us in his holiness (Protestant), or teaches us to be holy (Catholic), both of which are based on that notion of overcoming ontological separation. The cross should teach us that the Life, which the Father always and completely gives and which is always and completely received by the Son (Jesus Christ), already includes creation, and therefore also includes the pain and suffering resulting from humanity’s missing the mark (sin). God always and at just the right time (Paradox) bears the suffering of humanity. BTW, God did not turn his face from Jesus on the cross. Read the rest of Psalm 22 and 23. This is what it means that God is Love. God does not do abandonment.
(Paraphrase) Ephesians 2:8-9
For it is by Grace you have (already though not yet) been saved, through faith - though it is not your faith that saves you (Protestants) though it is a faith that you participate in, but rather the faith of Jesus Christ, which is always already given freely to all - and neither is it your works that save you (Catholics) though salvation means freedom to do good works, because I know you’re all (Protestant and Catholic) going to try to take credit for it in some way and therefore try to exclude some from God’s free gift. Everyone is welcome at God’s table.
